Good Points: Fast, very economical - adequate family car.

Bad Points: Noisy and unrefined, Service costs. Mechanical longevity worries, front tyre wear, experienced poor dealer service.

General comments: It was a toss up between an 18 month Saab 9-5 Linear 2.2 TiD estate with less than 10k on the clock or a new Mondeo/Vectra or similar, and sad to say, I made the wrong choice.

I always wanted a Saab - I drove a 900 as a hire car upgrade a few years ago - but they seem to have gone a long way downhill since their tie-up with GM.

The 9-5 is OK, but it's a little crude by modern standards, however:

At 14,000 miles, it needed new front tyres - and I am not a hard driver.
At 15,000 miles it blew a valve - fortunately covered by warranty but worrying when you wonder what's going to go wrong in future.
This week was the killer blow - I took it for service - nothing extra except wiper blades - the bill was £430 and it hadn't even been valeted.

I thought that after 6 months, it might be time to say goodbye - but my dealer has just told me that after 6 months and 10,000 miles, it has dropped by 40% in value - so I guess in 2 years it will be worth zilch. I was prepared to take a hit, but not that much.

I guess I shouldn't really be writing this - it isn't going to help the value of the thing when I do get rid of it - but maybe it will help me to get over it

Japanese cars for me in future - can't quite recall why I went back to European,
