“On the whole I've loved owning this car however some...”

★★★☆☆

written by engjhuyt on 07/09/2007

On the whole I've loved owning this car however some pointers for potential buyers

a) I bought the car with 23K on it with service history
b) It's always had main dealer servicing at recommended intervals (min £300 - max £2500 [this excluding heater matrix below])
c) It has had additional works at main dealer as required
d) I've tipped in the litre of Selenia per month that it likes to drink

In this time it has consumed

2003) 1 off 'Heater matrix' - I sent it in with none functioning air distribution controls and this came back fixed - at a cost of £2500 to the warranty company
2003/2004/2006) 3 x 2 off rear suspension arms (because bushes can't be changed?) - consumable components(???) so not covered under warranty(?)
2006) New discs since the pads installed by main dealer 9 months previous had worn out and cut into them - consumable components so not covered under warrenty(?)
2007) Air conditioning compressor (due to circulation line rupture)
2007) I have just written the car off due to failed cambelt (at 68K) and no, the main dealer has not advised previously, in addition the air distribution had failed again and there were worrying noises again from the rear suspension - I shouldn't have to do this to a 6 year old car but main dealer is quoting £340 to evaluate damage and then additional £1500 - £2500 to repair.

Overall great car but if your thinking of buying then may I suggest that you do the following

a) Consider why it's such a great value used car.
b) Look on eBay for the quantity being sold for sale or repair with defunct engine
c) Since I bought it two year old for over £10K it has much more than that spent on servicing/repairs and still, only four years later I have to kill it, £5K year before fuel, insurance and tax - I don't think so!

That's a real horror story and I sympathise. I've bought an older one (1999) and I don't mind if the motor pops too much as I can always shove another one in myself (mine doesn't use any oil at 65k - I will be watching closely as we approach 68k though!).

If you have some mechanical knowledge these cars can be cheap to run. That heater matrix is £70 for the part and the rest is labour for example. I would be furious in your shoes, as you say, they make a great, cheap sports saloon buy, if you are lucky.

written by Simon Tomkins on 16/09/2004

It's a shame such a great looking car like the Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Twin Spark is constantly let down by poor servicing and build quality.
Alfa will only compete with their German rivals once they get their act together - looks like a long hard road.
With residuals low a used 3 year model with FSH would make a great buy.

written by darrenptalbot on 05/01/2004

Why does a 4 year old Alfa 156 2.0 twin spark break down in a terminal manner such as this?
I have had Audi's, BMW's, Land Rovers and various other cars in the past. I have never had a problem like this in 14 years!

I couldn't agree more, shame to see such a great car spoilt by poor build quality.

BTW Don't buy another Land Rover old mate, even worse! Mines just done 90,000 miles and the whole engine has blown up without warning. It's not the only one either. TD5's all seem to become terminal at around 90,000 to 110,000 miles. For a utility it's diabolical. Land Rover know all about it and couldn't give a stuff. It's a design fault in the head studs, so beware.

I Sold my s reg 2LTR TS after 3yrs trouble free motoring at 177000 miles, did need a new rad at 10000 buts thats all.
Just use fully synthetic 0-40 and change every 6 thousand miles.
I have just seen my old car it now has 200000 on the clock, the new owner keeps it well polished, still looks like new.

Hi
I've not gone for L/R either - now have an excellent VW Passat 1.8T. Very quick, reliable, good value for money - would recommend it to anyone :-)

“The Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 twin spark is a beautiful car...”

★★★★☆

written by Alfie. on 31/05/2002

The Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 twin spark is a beautiful car spoiled by poor build quality and debatable reliability. As an owner of Audis ranging from full blown quattros to a modern V6, Alfa can only dream of matching their reliability and build quality so yet again the style grace and beauty of another Italian car fails to deliver.
Would you attempt to drive one across Europe without breakdown cover?

No detail given of mechanical problems to substantiate the claim of poor reliability. We all know that some people have had problems but the review doesn't detail any, just repeats the hearsay.

I can recount tales of Audi howlers that dwarf Alfa problems but I won't, because they were not my cars.

Yes - I have driven one across Europe and without breakdown cover, but than I know how to fix most things myself.

written by Paul. on 25/10/2000

The car I tried has trhe electrics hanging out of the steering column because of some *minor* fault. The engine was OK but not impressive. The ride quality was very poor. I expect to feel the road but not every little bump.

Once initial problems are sorted out the cars are pretty reliable.

I have since gravitated towards cars with stiffer suspension set ups and am now happy to eat my words. Feeling the bumps is a good sacrifice for excellent handling. I guess everyone compares with what they have driven before.

Incidently, there are a few cars on the road that handle extremely well yet still manage to soak up the minor surface undulations. Best I have come across for this is the BMW M5 (now available used for less than a new 156!!!)

You are meant to feel the road, the amount of downforce this car puts down is massive in ratio with the speed and front end weight. The car clings to the road because of the stiff suspension coupled with the downforce. I would have to agree with another commenter, if you don't want to feel the road buy a truck.

It could be that you have a veloce. I've got a lusso and have just completed a 4500 mile tour of europe. It was trouble free and the ride very comfortable on all road surfaces. This coming from someone who swore by renult 25's before returning to the alfa fold. Major problem with alfa ownership is the alfa 'zone managers', who are unprofessional and crass.

THE REASON YOU ARE ABLE TO FEEL "EVERY LUMP AND BUMP" IS BECAUSE THE CAR HAS A SPORTS SUSPENSION SO THAT IT CAN COPE WITH THE SUPERB PERFORMANCE IT PUTS DOWN. IF YOU WANT TO WALLOW IN YOUR VEHICLE THEN GO AND BUY A FRENCH CAR BUT DONT EXPECT TO KEEP UP WITH THE ITIALIANS.

Ouch! It would seem that the reviewer is definitely not an Alfisti. What others call "problems", we call "endearing quirks". That's ok; Alfa's aren't for everyone - thank goodness!

I just bought a 2004 156 1.6 ltr Tspark, with no owners manuals. How do you get the air conditioning to work? I see buttons but have no clue!
