The ship is called Royal Lotus and is not owned by Viking but by Movenpick. It is similar to other river cruise ships we've been on, and along with all the other ships we saw on the Nile. The food was good although everyone in our tour group (24 of us) did get the "Mummy Tummy". I don' think this was the fault of the ship, but was probably one of the small restaurants we stopped and ate at during the bus tour portion of the trip. Two of the elderly people in our group were hospitalized for 4 days with amoebic dysentary. They have cheap medicine in Egypt to take for this with no side effects. Make sure you take it. It's called Nifuroxazide.
Everything Viking provided (hotels, guide, ship, buses, etc) were all first rate. The 5 star hotels were as nice or nicer than any you'd find anywhere else in the world. I feel that the itinerary covered all that you'd want to see of Egypt. I can't think of anything they should do different.

We spent a wonderful week on Viking 1 from Nov. 21st 2005. The crew were all helpful and friendly and the service great. Hygiene standards were high and as far as I know there were no "Egypt tummy" problems.
Yes the meals became a bit same-ish after a while but they have to cook with what is available and there was still plenty of choice and quantity.
Our Egyptologist was excellent, spoke very good English and did his best to avoid peak times for our visits.
We took all the extra trips wh ...

I was Very dissapointed with Viking I, no carpeting in floor, slow service for drinks, buffet meals which were boring and repetative.
Went on to stay at crocodile island which was very relaxing and quiet.
