Just wanted to start of by saying that form one review, if you have bought this system withing the last 5yrs, & by it from a shop take the warrenty.
As these are now dis-continued.

Mind you, Iv have mine for over 5yrs & i cannot fault it.
Before blu-ray this was & still is the bomb.
Spend a fiver & get the 5.1 demo disks...they will upset the neighbours.
Pitty its not a passive system, but who cares.
Only reason for my move was to upgrade to blu-ray.

I remember seeing this in France when i... (read more)

I want to upgrade to Blue Ray and have had my system since 2001.
Can I do this if not can I reuse the speakers. I have been told that the speakers need to be 4-6 ohm resistance whereas these are 3. (I'm not technical). Also that it is not a passive system. Does that refer to the unit itself or the speakers as well (particularly the sub woofer)?

I bought the S880 at the end of 2002 from comet and it's worked a treat for me with none of the problems that have been described. The only problem with it now is the power button which turns off from time to time. But that's not bad after just over 7 years of use.
The sound quality is superb, especially when used to listen to super audio cds. The reason i've given the image quality a 3 is only because I never had a great TV to test it on.
Overall i'd say this was one of the best buys... (read more)

Written on: 26/08/2009

I have a Sony DAV-S880. I had the DVD playback issues a while back, and had it fixed at 100 pounds. Recently, the same problem has surfaced again - the disc would cycle between reading and a blank screen, eventually giving up with a 'Can't Play' message. I'm quite disappointed, as I was under the impression that Sony would have made a better player than this. Now I use it as a speaker set only. (read more)

Bought the Sony DAV-S880 kit to go with my Sony tv, and wish I hadn't.
It overheats badly and stops mid film as a consequence.
In addition it broke down completely after 3 years, and having had the laser assembly replace it has broken again. Not worth fixing as I can get a decent receiver for the cost of a sony repair. (read more)

Hi
I was unaware of the problems with this product. However, I have been looking at many reports regarding the Sony DVD S880 system.
I purchased mine about 18 months ago, but did not take out the extended warranty. Like many, I bought this system because Sony sell their name, and it looked good.
I did not use the unit for longer than 5 hours at the weekend and I would estimate the total use over this period above, about 400 - 500 hours (MAX)
My unit failed whilst on stand by. I contacted... (read more)

I shopped around for about 6 months before diving in and buying an all in one setup.

What can I say, it does what it says on the tin!

The unit looks lovely, as do the speakers, the setup couldnt be simpler with the colour coded sockets, and the sound and image quality are (to my eyes and ears) fantastic.

I managed to find this for £550 (including 3 dvds regionfree'd) from techtronics, I've not had any problems at all with it.

As has been identified in the other reviews the installation is easy enough, well that is if you can cope with out a scart lead. I disagree , I have owned many stereos & found this one to sound fantastic for its size , sure the remote is not perfect but this unit was well worth the money ( $2000.00 AUD ) , I just finished watching Bad Boys II on DVD & it sounded great , not to mention this is one of the few units around that play SACD , so stick that in your pipe and smoke it - if your not sure what SACD is please do a search on it & you will be impressed. Yes , some people complin that the sub is a little less than bassey but I guess it depends on your room & surroundings , you can hook a bigger sub up if you need too , enjoy it - I certainly do !

I bought this system because the living room is definitely my wife's and she wasn't going to wear a separates system in there. With Sky and a TiVo, space under the TV was also at a premium.

Setup was very easy, with the the colour coded speaker wires helping an lot (plenty of cable provided).

Dear Sir,
I bought my multi-region DAV S880 from Home Cinema. After 2 months it developed an intermittent fault where the DVD picture froze and the player refused to read the disk - and went into a continuous repeat-read-fail mode. After cleaning the unit thoroughly and trying various disks to no avail (all the latter played on an alternative player without problems) I deduced it was a problem with the player itself and I contacted Home Cinema and returned the unit to them at their request... We too have the same problem with this unit. We do not use it very often and have not yet tried to return it for replacement. After using a disc for 90 mins or more the problem tends to appear. It is extremely annoying especially given that this is not just a basic model but is in fact quite an expensive one. You have usually just reached the most exciting part of a movie when the problem appears. You cannot imagine anything more furstrating or annoying.

Following Sony's advice I took my original faulty DAV 880 unit to COMET/Curry's who were able to provide a replacement unit without any problem. Their service Dept. were unable to proceed with a repair (they said that Sony were unable to supply the spare part (the diode/reader assembly)in sufficient time and so they were happy to provide a replacement despite the item being purchased from another supplier. COMET/CURRY's customer service was excellent in this respect as opposed to the original supplier (see previous comments). However, due to this poor experience I have replaced the Sony unit with a Pioneer multi-region unit which as with all Pioneer units I have purchased over the years proved excellent. The replacement Sony unit has been relegated to the spare room and is not often used, however, it has frozen up on me once but I cannot confirm this is a repeat of the previous problem. It is interesting to hear that I am not alone in experiencing this problem.
I anyone else has a problem I suggest you contact the Sony help desk and ask for a replacement or your money back.
Moral of the story is - dont buy from certain suppliers over the web and be careful with all-in one home cinema units from Sony, stick to separates which are more reliable and easier to service/replace.

I had the same problem with the DAVS800. Comet took it back but the model had been replaced by the 880. I exchanged it for the 880. So far, it's been OK - but for an expensive system, it's not what I would have expected.

I did find that Comet were very reluctant to replace the system - they wanted to repair it (it was less than 3 months old). Only persistence resulted in it being replaced and I had to pay the difference.

This is a followup to my previous posting.

We returned the unit to the Dealer we bought it from and after about a month we recieved it back only to find that the problem was still there. In fact just like one of the other commenters the problem was actually worse as the freezes occurred more often. No parts were replaced but the unit was reset and recalibrated. We returned the unit again and after a delay of three weeks recieved it back. This time two parts were replaced including the diode and so far the unit seems to be working correctly. In fact we have been able to watch parts of some DVDs we were unable to watch before. For example the closing credits of Monsters Inc. which always exhibited the problem. We are hoping that this is the end of the story but if the problem reappears we will be looking for a replacement or our money back. I certainly have little faith in Sony or their service agents at this stage. It is also interesting to note that Sony have already replaced this model with a newer one (DAVS888). I wonder why!?

I have the same problem for the last three months with picture freezes, continuous read-fail mode followed by "can't play" message. Intermittently and mostly unable to read/play VCDs and DVDs. All these while I thought it was the VCDs and DVDs. Luckily I came across this website and found others are having the same problem. Try the VCDs and DVDs on other DVD player- no problem. Just sent my unit to Sony and was informed that they need to replaced a component and the diode (just wondering are these the main causes of the problem). They need to do some tests first before returning it to me. Hoped that everything is OK after this repair as my warranty ends 31 Dec 03.

The picture freezes - I agree. I now use it as a CD player and amplifier + speakers only when I watch DVDs. I now use one of Toshiba's as a DVD player connecting the audio signal to the 880 because the Toshiba player has no problem to play DVDs. Looking at the comments from other people, the pickups in the Sony's product range have obvious design faults.

I had problems ordering my system from RGBdirect. But it was £600 so never mind. It is multiregion. If you have a plasma or componant tv (best) just plug in your componant wire from dvd to tv like me i dont have plasma so if you want to improve your picture use an S-Video to Scart (135av) for picture and a pair of Gamma Geometry™ audio interconnects (1002 or 1014) for improved sound. (135av)(s-video - scart)picture option (1002 or 1014)( rca - rca)sound from your tv
the reason this dvd hasn't got any scart socket is because information from a scart(av) is shared audio/video(av) this a very easy and basic way form of conection (not that impresive though)so don't be disapointed because it doesn't have scart. A better way of connecting is seperating the information altogether S-video lead just take the images to the tv rca for the sound I would use either monster cable or straightwire these are best gold plated wires and cost between £25-£60 each if you want pure gold it would cost you even more 100's it also depends on length

Gold speaker connectors and high quality speaker cable are available from monster cable www.monstercable.com they are called hcib. You get cable pre-terminated with gold connectors for all 6 speakers, 6 gold plated adapters so that you can plug them in to the DAV-S880 and a scart cable. The kit is not cheap at £99.00 but it makes a big difference in sound quality especially bass & in the rear speakers. The only downside is the connectors stick out of the bottom of the speakers, causing the speakers to lean, I got around this though by using speaker spikes to raise the speakers up.

Re: Simon's questions.

It is certainly true that the manual is less than helpful if you are used to a SCART environment.

Simon, what you need to get are cables which have the connectors for the Sony at one end (ie, phonos or S-Video miniDINs) and SCARTs at the other. These cables are usually directional so make sure you get the right ones (ie, S-Video DIN to SCART for the TV connection, which must go into a S-Video aware SCART on the TV - check the TV manual but usually SCART 2), SCART to phono for the Sky box, and a fully wired 6 phono to SCART for the VCR)

“I bought this system to replace my old 2 speaker...”

Written on: 19/11/2002 by Mark.

I bought this system to replace my old 2 speaker HIFI I connected up my PS2, VHS and sky box equipment inside 1 hour of getting it, using the optical input cable for the PS2 sound connection. It loud enough for any large room in a standard 3/4 bedroom house, its not as loud as my old HIFI (pound for pound) but 10 times the quality and sound clarity, several times the bass and tops, just a very small lack in mid range tones when playing CD's and that depends on the CD you put in. I would... (read more)

A great review of what appears to be a great product.
I have a question though... my TV has only scart sockets (on back) (s-video on front). I have looked at sites selling this model and they specify component video as well as composite. Well my question is: how do I connect this to my TV? I don't want to have to plug it into the s-video on the front. Is there a scart on the DVD player? Please help!

Shawn,
There is not scart on the Dav s880. The system has a yellow video out cable that comes with a scart adaptor so you have both options for connection to the TV.
The system is fabulous for DVD, however if your main priority is music I would take your 700 pounds and buy a separates sytem that you can add to over time!

just bought DAVS880 and it is great. However, having problems getting the Component out channel working for the DVD.
The manual says 'When mode is DVD and PROGRESSIVE is selected on SCREEN SETUP the signal is output only from the COMPONENT OUT jacks'
I did this but the output is still only comming from the S-Video.
Any ideas

I'm seriously thinking about buying this kit to replace my 18 year old much loved Technics HiFi and rubbish Accoustic Solutions DVD player. Comet are doing an Internet special of £630, sound good?.
Couple of questions, I have an old Panasonic TV (90s) Will I be able to intergrate it through the DAVS880?
Is the DAVs880 DVD player multi-region and RCE compatable?

There is a physical switch on the back of the base unit, when this is switch it changes the output, there will be no S Vid output it will be a progressive scan from the Componant outputs.
Hope this helps.

take a look at http://www.techtronics.com, this is where I purchased my unit and they offer an upgrade to make them multi-region etc... they have all the info that you require on the site. (and they are usually much cheaper than Comet etc! Hope that helps. Oh, and sorry I can't help with the component video in the previous post, maybe check that the output device accepts component-I believe that plasma TVs do?, I just use the s-video on mine. Shawn

I bought one of these a few months ago with a sony tv and matching cabinet - the remote doesn't work unless you point it straight at the unit. I thought it was the smoked glass doors but my sky & vcr remotes work perfectly well, infact I can point them anywhere in the room. Do I have a faulty remote or ir receiver or are they all like that? (yes I have brand new batteries, inserted correctly!)

my remote is the same, I find it a real pain. Also it is very sensitive, so pausing a movie or whatever sometimes becomes difficult. It pauses and pauses again, resulting in the movie to remain playing.

“I decided to buy one of these Sony DAV-S880 DVD player...”

Written on: 15/11/2002 by Phil moore.

I decided to buy one of these Sony DAV-S880 DVD player systems as a replacement for both my Hi Fi and existing DVD player. The setup was very easy as they have custom connectors. The unit itself is very good looking, compared to other home cinema systems it's very small, but I am not too sure about the push in front loading (just picturing myself trying to get a stuck disk out with a knife).
It interfaces well with both my video and satellite. The MP3 feature on this is great as I have over... (read more)

I sort of agree - I love the look of mine, but it feels like I havent plugged the sub in right - I seem to have hardly and bass/mid range when watching TV through it. DVDs are very detailed, but again sound quite bass light..... any suggestions anyone?

Yeah Even my only fear after buying this system is the push in front loading , this seems to be bit critical for such good model of Sony...I fear whether this might damage my DVD's...

Otherwise I feel good with this system.
