I have a Sony DAV-S880. I had the DVD playback issues a while back, and had it fixed at 100 pounds. Recently, the same problem has surfaced again - the disc would cycle between reading and a blank screen, eventually giving up with a 'Can't Play' message. I'm quite disappointed, as I was under the impression that Sony would have made a better player than this. Now I use it as a speaker set only.

I love it and question those who have had problems. They most likely stacked it on top of other units and wonder why it over heats, (As did I to start). They also comment on dust, which suggests to me they need to keep their homes cleaner. Mine is great!

We spent a lot of time researching which model to buy, after owning for 6 months the machine burnt out, was fixed under warranty, after another 12 months the DVD's started skipping so we took it back for repair to be told there was an upgrade to be done the parts were free and we had to pay labour, also the laser needed replacing, after another 18 months the same problem is occurring, this machine would be used about 3 hours per month, an absolute piece of rubbish the sony never stood behind, wi ...

Bought the Sony DAV-S880 kit to go with my Sony tv, and wish I hadn't.
It overheats badly and stops mid film as a consequence.
In addition it broke down completely after 3 years, and having had the laser assembly replace it has broken again. Not worth fixing as I can get a decent receiver for the cost of a sony repair.

Sensitive to dust, scratches and sometimes it just don't like the disk even out the wrapper new. Overheats easily @ 2.5 hours and needs turning off to work again. This old player better finish and picture/sound than latest sony's cheap plastic rubbish.

Sony , we trusted so much and continue trusting you, Why is that if it had been problem identified, no steps have been taken to equip your service centres across world in addressing the same.

You could have earned the loyalty of your trusted customers.

The Sony DAV-S880 is an excellent DVD home cinema system. I bought it about three years ago now, and I have not had one problem.

The PQ into my Pioneer HDTV is astounding, and it beats many newer "up-scaling" models.

    Hi

I was unaware of the problems with this product. However, I have been looking at many reports regarding the Sony DVD S880 system.

I purchased mine about 18 months ago, but did not take out the extended warranty. Like many, I bought this system because Sony sell their name, and it looked good.

I did not use the unit for longer than 5 hours at the weekend and I would estimate the total use over this period above, about 400 - 500 hours (MAX)

My unit failed whilst on stand by. I conta ...

I have had the S880 for two years and has cost me over £100 in repairs for multiple faults that a retailer told me are common on this model.

This Sony DAVS-880 is an all in one, Home Cinema (DVD Player/Radio/Surround Sound/CD/MP3 etc)system. I bought mine off the net ready chipped for Multi Region, as Sony shops only supply Region 2(and are more expensive!!).
Once set up, the DVD system is easy to operate.
The picture quality is excellent, but a few MR DVD's (cheap one's from China) did not play.
The sound quality is very good, however I would recommend an ACTIVE Sub Woofer if you want really good (deep) bass.(Sony DAVS 888 just r ...

I have the Sony DAV-S880 and I can't seem to play any DVDs. I recently played a region 1 DVD without any problems but when I tried the following day with the same DVD, the system said 'Reading' followed by 'Can't Play' after a few minutes. Unfortunately, my warranty ran out in Dec 2003.
Please can some help by sending me an email at tony.grewal@spargonet.com

After 3 month, my DAV-S880 had failed in the Stand-by mode, ie after a few minuts folowed by pressing the stand-by mode, the system freezes and needs full restarting. I have sent the system to the authourized Sony center for replacing, but they anouned that we can repair it, not replacing...now after 1 months, thay are telling me that we need more time for spare parts. Now i am very disapointed for the costomer servise and also i have hesitate for the perfect desinging of the system.

I shopped around for about 6 months before diving in and buying an all in one setup.

What can I say, it does what it says on the tin!

The unit looks lovely, as do the speakers, the setup couldnt be simpler with the colour coded sockets, and the sound and image quality are (to my eyes and ears) fantastic.

I managed to find this for £550 (including 3 dvds regionfree'd) from techtronics, I've not had any problems at all with it.

    well worth it.

I bought this system at Christmas to replace a selection of large speakers and separates that had taken over my front room. As has been identified in the other reviews the installation is easy enough, well that is if you can cope with out a scart lead. I needed to go to the shops to buy some decent leads to make the connection from the unit to the TV. The speaker leads and connections are not what you expect with equipment at this price. Once I had everything connected and fired up, the firs ...

I bought this system because the living room is definitely my wife's and she wasn't going to wear a separates system in there. With Sky and a TiVo, space under the TV was also at a premium.

Setup was very easy, with the the colour coded speaker wires helping an lot (plenty of cable provided).

The remote is hideously badly designed, with a large central button that controls the dimmer of the LED (???) and a tiny hidden one for input selection! There are limited TV control functions, but no ...

    Dear Sir,
I bought my multi-region DAV S880 from Home Cinema. After 2 months it developed an intermittent fault where the DVD picture froze and the player refused to read the disk - and went into a continuous repeat-read-fail mode. After cleaning the unit thoroughly and trying various disks to no avail (all the latter played on an alternative player without problems) I deduced it was a problem with the player itself and I contacted Home Cinema and returned the unit to them at their request (som ...

I bought this Sony DAV-S880 system as a replacement of my old hifi separates. The reason I bought this system was because it was in my price range and has everything I require and looks the part in my living room.

When playing back DVD movies this system is faultless, the picture quality is perfect and the sound will blow you away. The system itself is a lesson in build quality and design. I can't find a single fault. This system has progressive scan so is a perfect match for plasma screens.
