In essence, I do not say that Anne Applebaum, Gulag: A History of the Soviet Campsbook is false; it does have it's merits, but also known difficulties with numbers that do not have the slightest touch with reality, and internal conflicts etc. However, this could still be tolerated if the book would be well written.
I do not know what audience the book was targeted to, but perhaps I am not part of suggested group. However, the author suggests that she is writing a scientific study concerning the subject. I did observe from the very beginning that she used methods that are common for people who are not entirely sure about their study, or assume readers to be idiots:-
1. Excess repetition. It was not only once that the author brought up an argument but, precicely the same arguments were used many times without anything justifying their use.
2. Author repeated time after time her personal opinions about horrors and terror. Well, readers are generally not idiots, unnecessary underlining makes the reading experience very painful. For a book of this kind I would personally expect facts not assumptions, not opinions, but solid facts. I can judge and form my opinions myself.
3. Disorganization. The author had great difficulties focusing on the subject itself, and she was more than few times sidetracked with the preceding statement.
