I have read the other reviews here and frankly cannot understand the negative points expressed. I read this book when it was first published and could not to this day get it out of my head. It was horrifying and a brilliant portrayal of true evil, perhaps only rivaled by Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood." It is an extremely revealing portrait of postwar alienation, twisted sick minds and sheer banality all packaged in two people who never should have met.
