If you are a private seller who hasn't sold anything on eBay for the last week, please think again especially if you want immediate payment from your buyer. I am utterly disgusted by Paypal and eBay's 21 day holding policy. They held my funds for 21days for something I sold on eBay for a reason they could not fully explain to me. won an item then seller demanded extra £100, this was not fair. I replied to them asking for a refund and didn't get a reply contact ebay and said have to wait 14 days! before can ask for a refund then a further 3 days to allow the seller to reply. By then the money would of been in his bank! Do not use ebay unless buying from a business seller and even then you are paying over the odds as they price them to include the huge fees. (read more)

Bought in good faith on eBay. A few days after I received the laptop (and I already handed it to a customer) police came knocking on my door to confiscate the laptop because stolen. Took me a while to get it back from my customer and hand over to the police. This delay was a problem because the police refused to cooperate in any way at a later date. My goodness that buyer sounds very dodgy. Sellers are not meant to put up with unreasonable demands. Ebay should remove the negative feedback! The fees in these sort of circumstances should be paid by the buyer but ebay don't work like this.

in real estate overseas, they used to include a clause in the contracts=caveat per emptor =the meaning of which is = the buyer beware=. on an auction that is all the more true HOWEVER i must fully agree with you that in the event of an item not attracting high bids --unless there is a reserve price which is not reached --whatever the highest offer or as low as the highest offer may be that is a contractually done deal,, as i say , unless there was a reserve or minimum price stipulated. just one more thing be sure the seller did not include a clause stating/reserving their right to withdraw the item for certain reasons

Hi, if you win an auction and the seller refuses to complete the transaction you can report them as a non selling seller. Its a breach of ebay policy. I am a seller and Ive had auctions end at a loss but thats the risk you take. If someone wins a bid for 99pence they are still a customer.

I was trying to find the right words for my review, I then came across yours, I think you have said it all really. I have not had any problems recently but i have spent a fortune on Ebay since 2004. I buy more than I sell in fact I probably have a bit of a problem with E-bay I buy something at least once a week.
I have a very high consistent rating as a buyer on Ebay and it's probably because I use it a lot I have noticed a big change with how business is conducted now and how Ebay is not the company it once was.
It as lost it's integrity over the years and it's bordering on being to much of a pain, I have in fact over the past few weeks payed over the odds on some things from Amazon rather than gamble on Ebay.

I've had a shop on eBay since 2004 and agree with the Reviwer. However I would excercise caution depending on what your selling and would offer the below advice to sellers:
1) Always send items by recorded or special delivery where a signiture is required.
2) Never send items until payment has been received and has cleared.
The only negative with eBay are the fee's. If you add on the Paypal commision charges they can total up to 20% of the product price. That's worth considering if you are trading regularly. Shop fee's are lower but you pay a minimum of £14.98 per month just to keep it hosted. VAT however is only charged at the Swiss rate which at leasts offsets some of the effect.

Its going to be a bleak Christmas this year for most who sell on eBay for a living or for extra cash flow to their business. Just before the Christmas rush eBay brought into force their latest changes to 'Multi Variation Listings' - where for example you may be selling a coat in 4 different colours in a range of sizes in one listing where the buyer can click to select what colour and size they need. I have been an eBay member since 2003 and sold/purchased lots. As a business seller I was finding using the site full of more and more fraudsters and eBay and Paypal just allowing this to happen. For example someone purchases something sent via first or second class then doesn't leave feedback, you have 45 days to file a claim. a few days before the 45 days is up they open a case saying the item hasn't arrived (knowing you are more likely to no longer have the proof of postage)... I have used ebay to purchase about 25 items and have never had a problem. I find it easy to use and has a huge selection of items. But buyer beware! as they say. Choose your seller carefully and check their feedback BEFORE buying. Most sellers are genuine, some are terrific but there are sharks. Ebay is great if you select who you buy from with care. Look for sellers that are either registered business sellers, or who have a high scoring. I find the customer service from these sellers to be excellent, as they have the incentive of protecting their reputation. Bear this in mind and you can get some great items and very low prices! Ebay is a great site, There's a huge range of items and great bargains available. The only downside is it's pricey to sell products on the site. There's the listing fee, the final valuation fee and the paypal fee. It's ok for small things like dvds, but if you're selling something for £400 they will take around £50 out of your profits. Ouch! I was a 100% seller on ebay.5 star DSR and top rated. I had unlimited listings and business was going great. Until, i got a restriction and that to indefinite. No review and final decision given. Why? at the same time i seen that a lot of sellers were receiving the same problems. Its not easy to start again, as they link you back and restrict all accounts. If someone used your computer, share modems with another seller they link you back. So basically you are penalised for another mistakes.... (read more)

Yes i sold on ebay for 9 months, out of evedy item sold i brought the ite, listed, answered questions and posted. Afterward ebay took about 90% of any profit and leaving me with a few pence. Amazon are even worse, they charge 17.5% and even take from postage. But the reason i left i found them so frustrating to deal with and there 1 million policies.

I really love shopping on eBay, it's like going to a boot fair and finding all the best bit, but not having to get up at 7am on a Sunday morning. I think the fees on ebay are way too high (9%!!!), while prices go up for the sellers, it's good for buyers. I sell alot of my clothes on ebay (or at least try to) and most of them go away for a way too cheap price. Somehow people seem to have lost interest on bidding and ebaying. It's really not the same as it used to be, I dont enjoy it as much as I did before and I am looking for other sites to sell my perfectly new clothes now. :( (read more)

its 10% + listing fee unless you list on feee weekend as most do. However paypal charge something like 34p + 3.5% so if your selling item less than £10 then the % increases to 15-20%. If your buying to sell at best profits are divided up ebay 80% you 20%

I have used eBay for many years, It's an OK auction web site, but the amount of money they extort out of you is ridiculous considering all they are doing is letting you post an ad, think about all the thousands of websites on the net that you can make a post on for free, it costs them next to nothing for you to list an item, yet they charge 1001 different listing fees and then take you for over 5% of the sale, they charge you even if your item doesn't sell, then they use paypal to rip you... I've used eBay for more than 8 years and it used to be a really good place to buy and sell. Selling wise I have now stopped because it is not really a reliable place for smaller sellers. Buyers are willing to threaten and abuse you and eBay don't make it clear enough to buyers that packaging costs should be considered when leaving feedback. As a buyer I have all but given up. In the past month i have had about 4 bidders win my auctions and then not pay for the items or even replying back to emails meaning ive had to open a case with ebay, wait 8 days and then finally relist the items, but because ebay won't let me leave negative feedback for a buyer i cannot warn other ebay members about these buyers, i don't see any point in a... Buying & selling on ebay for 11 years now. Life has certainly changed. Look round the house "bought it on ebay" said to many. Global selling place where all you want in collectable old items to new will be found. Sounds idealistic? Not quite. There are a huge amount of bad sellers, cheats & open thieves & bullies on ebay. i think ebay great it convenient lots variety and cheap buy most my stuff from ebay and delivery good too
