Good Points: NONE
General comments: My premium with Norwich Union home insurance increased over 100% in 3 years. They tried to blame computer error. £158 3 years ago, £326 now but cut to £210 - I have only had 3 claims in nearly 10 years.
I was passed back and forward to different departmants time and time again nobody was very helpful.

What on earth is going wrong at Norwich Union Direct? Why don't they try phoning as a punter and listen for themselves how frustrating it is.
There used to be good points about Norwich Union Direct not any more...their phone service answered by a woman's voice machine is usless. I eventually got through to someone who confirmed there were problems took details of the problem I wanted to discuss my car renewal. Then suddenly I was cut off, they have my telephone no on my current details...so fa ...

I had a house fire they promised me rented accommodation. An interim payment to buy clothes and things and I got nothing they have left me homeless for the last eleven weeks. I made a statement 3 weeks ago about the night of the fire and am still waiting for the copy to sign I mean how can it take three weeks to type a statement, they sent a firm out to board the property up and they would not do it on grounds of health and safety I had to get my own builder in to board the property up which Nor ...

I had a leak from the toilet cistern on the 23rd of December. As we have emergency cover phoned we phoned them so that they would get a plumber out to us. After waiting all day and several phone calls later we were told they were still trying. We spent Christmas week with a house full of relatives and the only toilet had to be flushed with a bucket of water. Thanks Norwich Union!

I made a claim with Norwich Union Direct Home Insurance for damage to my wife's engagement ring only to be told that we weren't covered even though we had accidental damage cover on contents removed from the home for up to 30 days because it was a 'personal belonging' and not a content! Which content of my house is not a personal belonging?

The price is very reasonable. The cover is excellent. I have been with NUD for several years. Each renewal I shop around and whilst I can sometime beat the price by a few pounds, I am so happy with the claims experience that I am prepared to pay a little extra for the excellent peace of mind. After all - that's what insurance is for.

Difficult to contact and kept on hold. Was told my claim was with Norwich Union Direct, then called NUD and was told my claim was with NU.Eventually they tracked down my policy. NUD tried everything possible to get out of paying. Leave well alone.

I had to claim on my home insurance after a neighbour caused damage to my property. Initially Norwich Union Direct said I had a claim and it would be fine, then they appointed a loss adjuster who told me all was ok. Then builder came and he said it was subsidence, which it wasn't. NU then said I would have to pay 1k excess. I argued about subsidence bit as I wasn't a builder it didn't seem to matter what I said. Then a structural engineer came and said it wasn't subsidence but damage from my n ...

We suffered a serious flood in May 2006, we have still not returned home simply because Norwich Union have not paid out. The builders will not return to finish the work as interim payments have not been met. We were threatened with eviction from our temporary home as Norwich Union had not paid the rent for 5 months, although demands were persistently made. They make it too easy to take payments from your account but very very difficult to make a claim. I tell everyone i know to stay well cle ...

I've now switched insurers and find that I get more cover for less money elsewhere. I don't know what the service will be like with the new lot, but it can't possibly be any worse than Norwich Union.

You cant get through to their claims number and when I did they used every clause and get out available to make the claim worthless. It took over two hours to get through each time I called. Don't touch with a barge pole.

Having spent many hours trying to get hold of a Norwich Union Direct Home Insurance representative. I gave up and contacted head office to make a complaint about the lack of correspondence. Every time I called the office I kept being told that the person I wanted to speak to was out at lunch, off on holiday or just not available to speak to me. I was also told that he would return my calls, and they told me that letters had been sent when they clearly had not.
I was not being treated as a cus ...

I had been with NU for 5+ years. Each year at renewal they would send out a reminder with a new quote on a "do nothing" basis, and the policy was renewed, with a new DD automatically set up. This year, for no apparent reason they did not, and left me without cover for a month. I admit that it is my responsibility to ensure that I was covered, but why this extremely dangerous change in customer service? If there had been a fire or other major trauma to the property I would have been financiall ...

I have been chasing a car insurance claim with Norwich Union Direct for over 8 weeks. I have been unable to live in my flat as I do not have access to my shower/bath. Staff I have spoken with were not understanding in the slightest. I have been told that my claim was only being processed because of an error on Norwich Unions part, and that they shouldn't have because my water damage was due to deterioration. Erm no!!! It was due to a burst pipe!
I have written THREE letters of complaint ab ...

They do not settle claims efficiently, if at all, and the stress involved with trying to restore our home after a massive flood (due to a blocked sewage drain 3 doors down) has been unbearable. We are still waiting to return home after 7 months, and now the appointed Loss Adjuster will not respond to letters, phone calls or emails. We are now seeking legal advice to try and recover the costs for our damaged contents, and we cannot return home without basic essentials, e.g. fridge freezer and w ...

I took the cheapest policy I could find and this happened to be Norwich Union's policy. The premium worked out less than it would be through the Insurance Company I work for so that is saying something. However, I received a letter from them which went some way towards explaining the price. It told me that the are that I live in, which had been accepted by them for cover a few months earlier, had become a flood risk and that my premium would be increased accordingly. According to the environm ...

I reported a water leak in my property to Norwich Union Direct Home Insurance at 10am Friday 18th August 2006. After NUMEROUS phone calls to the helpline, all at MY expense, 28 hours after my original phone call, Saturday 19/08/06, I had a plumber at my house. I received a totally unacceptable service. The helpline blamed the contractor, and the contractor blamed the helpline. A strong letter of complaint has been sent to Norwich Union. I look forward to their response!!

My house suffered severe water damage (the eventual payout was £23,000), and Norwich Union Direct home insurance company, who I had been paying out to for 12 years with no claim ever, made my life a misery for a year. Early on they sent someone out who confirmed that the claim was valid, but then nothing happened. Every day I called, but calls were never returned, and notes never seemed to be made on my file. It was all done through massive call centres. The whole thing is done in the hope ...

I am very dismayed that a large company such as Norwich Union Direct Home Insurance uses such unprofessional and unacceptable means of dealing with its insurance claimants.
I will certainly never do business with them again!
