Bought this HP3200c flatbed scanner some 10 years ago, in times of Win98 - it stayed idle on the bottom of a cabinet for 9+ years, both for my laziness to check for updated drivers and for the old-fashioned parallel interface.
These days, reviewing my own museum of over-aged hardware, I decided to give it a try. First played with some virtualization software (to little success), then I decided to go for an updated driver. Installed like a charm in a Win Server 2003 box, 600 dpi...

I couldn't help noticing the poor reviews of the Hewlett Packard 3200c scanner by others - I disagree.
The scanner produces perfectly good results considering the price of the unit.
I can't fault it at the price, and I can't really say that a more expensive scanner would do much more apart from offer increased resolution and image quality.

i can do better with a cheap hand-scanner. Ive never been so disappointed with a peice of hardware. I took it apart, only to find that the bushings that the scanner slides on were nearly unlubricated. I oiled them and the rod and it got slightly quieter, and the image got slightly better. I havent torn down the electric motor yet, but if that doesn't help at least i'll be left with a really neat neon light. (read more)

The driver installation has broken many times, I nearly gave up. I have much experience setting up computers, and this device has been my worst case yet.
Scanning is very slow, not because of the hardware but the terrible software. I have a 6 years old Mustek scanner that easily outperforms the HP. Besides, it temporary takes up twice the RAM the scanned picture has, and if you use the software wrapped inside a paint application like PaintShop, it is now 3 times the RAM size. Again my Mustek...
