I had my Vauxhall Cavalier GSi for about 6 years, put about 100k miles on it, but it was still going strong when I let it go. It was diamond black and completely standard, except for a Magnex s/s exhaust.
As you probably know, the GSi was basically a Cav CD with attitude, so you had a nice trim level with a lot of grunt.
My car developed a very nasty fault, it would just cut out at any random moment - very scary in the outside lane of the motorway? Then it would take some time to restart. It… Read Full Review

Everything about the car is as it should be, some people say that they Calibra is the better car but the cavalier is not only practical but I feel better handling and just more fun. Would recommend anyone to enjoy the experience of owning a cavalier until you have owned one and had people walk up to you telling you stories of when they had one you will truly not know how it feels. I loved this car when I first got it, I'd owned an 8v SRi before and I knew I liked the way the Cavalier felt to drive. Sadly the 4x4 is slower than the older SRi due to the extra weight for the running gear.. gutted, that said it did handle like it was on rails. IT had a million toys with it, mine was a bit tricked up with rims and lowered suspension etc. I was good while it lasted but sadly that heavy old running gear gave up on me after a few months or ownership ( probably due to my lack of… Read Full Review

We had one of these on a g plate a few years ago and the wife loved it.
We where lucky enough to have one with perfect rear arches but it rattled like hell when cold so we sold it on and got a Mitsubishi GTO twin turbo.
Garage bills were way to high with the GTO so remembering how much we loved the Cavalier GSI I've bought a Vectra GSI on a W and again the wife and I will both say the GSIs are the best 2 cars we have even owned and are miles better than our BMW as well… Read Full Review

For the year of manufacture (G on) the car is very high spec, discs all round, abs, power steering, independent rear suspension, 4 branch manifold, etc and more electrics than you can imagine! (mine has air con too). The cars look great as standard so don't spoil it with body modifications. Best colours are star silver (rare) and spectral blue (even rarer). Written on: 15/06/2004 by bob809 (1 review written)

I bought my Vauxhall Cavalier GSi 16V C20XE in November 1994 because I liked them from the BTCC. It was Anthracite Grey, standard alloy wheels, Continental tyres and standard exhaust, until it dropped off through rust, and the fuel tank had a leak. Then I bought a Scorpion twin exhaust, what a difference that made. Now 140 was easily attainable, as I discovered one night coming up to the south of Stoke on the dual carriageway.

My '92 CAVALIER GSi PROBLEMS

My Cavalier gsi was running sweet, until it started cutting out and revving high by its self, I changed air filter from cone to panel and it was still cutting out. I was told to change the AIR IDLE VALVE but before I put the new one on I was also told to clean it with break cleaner, so I have done what I was told, and my car has been perfect, no cutting out or idling high.

My mate had a calibra 16v and his car was cutting out, revving high, and has been a pain in the ass, he changed o2 sensor, air idle valve, air mass meter and it was still cutting out etc, he was told to change the temperature sender, but strange but true the car ran perfect when he changed the temperature sender. Hope this may help.

Have you looked at changing airflow sensor (this is the square box after flexible hose section, has a mulipin connector going into it). Changing this cured the problem on my mate's car, mine had SBD throttle body injection system and never suffered with this problem.

Written on: 06/09/2004

I imagine its already as quick (if not quicker) than RS Turbos, but here goes.

Although they are expensive (£250) pipercross viper induction kits are supposed to work well as they are enclosed and dont draw in the heat (which is a problem on the XE engined cavs). Then a set of better plugs and leads (splitfire work well) and maybe then a superchip, with the added camshafts or even a new gas flowed head (big power!)

Anyway it can get expensive but it'll be worth it. My dad had an sri, with most of that stuff on, and although not as quick as the GSi it flew!.

Good luck with the car

Vauxhall really got it right with this car. The best engine they have ever made. Damm quick even in a big car like this and the chassis is so stiff too. Ive lowered mine put a splitter on it and new wheels and it gets so much attention. All the toys u will ever need inside. fantastic car… Read Full Review

Dunno about the Cavvy 16v, it's front wheel drive so I don't like it, but I'll pass comment on the power claims. This engine will make 200bhp but not on the standard inlet manifold without serious work. My Opel Manta uses this engine, totally standard internally, but with 48mm throttle bodies and MBE aftermarket injection system (no airflow meter, throttle angle sensing) and this makes 205bhp (rolling road tested on J.Wilcox rolling road in Hinckley at 176bhp @ wheels)

Owned 1st cav 2.0i for almost 8 years, had to scrap after the body gave up the ghost. It did have 260,000 miles on the clock and the engine was still smooth. Original motor was good for almost 145 downhill, (5500 rpm in 5th, F16 box).
Bought second 16v sri, 1993 model. Had engine modded with SBD MT215 kit, (215 bhp claimed). Too fast for GB roads, probable licence loser. Took the car over to Germany, (autobahn), and it went off the clock in about 1Km. It kept on going until just under 7000 rpm in 5th, (F20 box, 6000 rpm = 150). Work that out! PS, Its a good job the brakes and suspension were uprated, it still took over 400 Yds to get back down to 100 mph.

I run a bashed and battered black Vauxhall Cavalier GSi 2000 16v C20XE as a second car, while the cossies garaged up for the winter, it's standard apart from an uprated air filter and obligatory custom stainless exhaust , i have no idea what sort of power it produces and don't really care, it never uses any oil between changes and pulls cleanly right up to the redline in fifth where the speedo runs out of numbers. Okay compared to the cossie the cavalier isn't going to break any land speed… Read Full Review

I agree 100% with plater, there never was an ecotec GSI Cavalier and who cares about economy when your buying a 150BHP car, want economy by a Micra. The original design remit was for performance and that's why Cosworth designed it. I raced one and SBD Motorsport took it to 196 BHP no probs and have kits up to 300 BHP

Oh, and just to agree with the comments above, the GSi was not sold after 1992, when it was replaced with the Cavalier Turbo. Remember GSi and Turbo were only available as saloon models with a very shallow boot.

If you think you have a GSi and it has an ecotec engine, it isn't a GSi. Check the back suspension, if it has independent rear suspension (IRS) then it's a GSi or Turbo.

If it has the standard torsion beam (and deeper boot) then it is likely to be a SRi. Ecotec 2.0 (X20XEV) engines had 136 BHP, whereas the red top (C20XE) had 150BHP as standard.

The Cavalier GSi is actually quite economical if driven considerately. With a very heavy right foot, it can be expected to drop to 25mpg round town, but on long runs mine makes nearly 40mpg easily.

These are great cars for the money, but do check for rust on rear wheel arches and in the chassis box sections below the rear spring mountings.

There is a Cavalier club (sort of). Have a look at www.cavweb.co.uk

I have never broken a GSI Ecotec, because, and i,ll repeat this for slow readers, there is no such thing as a GSI Ecotec !!!!!! if your cavalier is M reg or newer has manual rear window winders and has a green rockercover 2.0 litre 16 valve ecotec under the bonnet then you are the owner of an SRI or lesser model. If your car is logged as a GSI ( which came with full moulded bodykit, four electric windows, electric sunroof,15 inch alloys and fuel computer fitted as standard and not as optional extras..) and if this GSI of yours has an ecotec fitted under the bonnet then you have been sold a ringer or a replica, either way you have been done mate and i would be asking for my money back .

I stand by my my comments without doubt! My GSI 16v ecotec is returning me I would immagine over 40 mpg. It is not fitted with a fuel commputer, although I belive this was an option had I bought it new, as electric sun roof, rear windows etc. I would have imagined had I had an earlier model I might to had the opportunity to go for the much superior red top engine, but when you buy a car of this age you have a better chance of getting a decent eco than a highly thrashed red top SRI or equivilent astra .(and I`ve seen a few of these go pop) if you want performance, reliablity, a decent 20ltr 16v ecotec is the one for you and as said by plater who loves breaking GSI ecos he can command an extra £300 for a thrashed red top engine!

Plater's Response to 86609_Da Bomb.'s Review

Written on: 31/10/2003

There's no such thing as an ecotec gsi, the 2.0 litre 16v gsi redtop engine originated in the astra gte 16v, was fitted in the cavalier gsi from 1989 to early 1993 and also in the first mark 3 astra gsi's, it came with two distinct heads a cosworth prepared (coscast) head or vauxhalls own (GM) head, which was prone to being porous in high mileage motors. As for fuel economy these engines will easily return 35 miles to the gallon, they come with fuel computers as standard so its not hard to check . As for ecotec engines , let's be honest they're not in the same league as a decent redtop , hence the reason why redtop engines still command prices around the £450 mark regardless of mileage, whereas you will struggle to get £150 for any ecotec engine no matter the age or mileage, and i should know i break enough of them.

I dont agree with the mpg rating from Da Bomb, no not at all! I have a 94 ecotec GSI and I find the fuel consumption quite amazing! I bought it about 8 months ago for about £500. The interior is like new, yes really! altough it has over 12000 on the clock. A month or so after I bought it though the head gasket blew!. But rather than have it repaired on the cheap I put it into a Main dealer to be sorted out. So now it has cost me a grand altogether! but I know what these early eco engines were like, I suppose this has turned people off them. But if they are looked after properly they will reward you. My fuel consumption, I think I said is ammazing, I haven`t worked it out to mpg (cos I have to buy it in litres now) (excusses) But on a full tank(60ltrs) it tends to give me a regular return of about 550 miles. This I compere with my F reg fiesta 998 which is hard to push above 50 mph, admittedly it only has 4 gears but only gives me half the fuel consumption of the Cav and a LOT less comfort & performance. This car is very reliable. very comfortable, and I think for our roads, with gatsos, lasers, radar and what ever they may throw at us in the future to steal our licences, very worthy! and it has ABS air bag. Every thing you could wish for without spending a fortune! And they look good! Why isnt there a cav club??

I totally agree with 'pubert's' comments, i just sold a mint mk3 golf gti to get the money together for a year abroad and bought a 'cheap' cav sri (red top). I should have bought one in the first place cos its a howlin' motor which will beat most other raz boy mobiles. Lock em up people though cos mine got stolen last week an its scary how easy they are to take. Got it back though minus badges, ignition + a bent steering column. oh an my cav ate an rs2000 for breakfast only yesterday- nice one!

why do you like cavs so much? they weigh a lot and the engine is under-powered. 150bhp is decent for a standard hot hatch so its useless in a FAMILY CAR!!!!!!!! Escort RS' FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

For 1yr now I've had my 93' Cavalier SRI 16valve, which is basicaly a GSI with slight interior and rear suspension changes but with the added bonus of bein a wolf in sheeps clothing and cheaper to insure. The car has been very reliable with the only fault being the earth to the air mass meter breaking and the crank position sensor failing.
I've made slight mods to the car by removing the cat and fitting a free flowing exhaust which by a local tuning firms opinion has gave about a 10-15bhp increase in power and made the car a lot more repsonsive and cleaner in picking up revs.
On the road the car is great fun to drive after fitting Koni adjustable suspension and a strut brace, and also fun to hose Vectra SRI drivers who don't expect you to pull clean past them and off the clock.

Hey this Motor is just F A T, I've been driven these cars for 8 1/2 years now and I think that if you want a fast car, then this is all you need!!!!!!! I'e also drove the 2.0L Subaru Impretza TURBO 4x4, that also is F A T !!! but I've learned over the last few years that you don't need to spend 1000's of pounds on a fast car when you can get a GSi 16v 4x4 (or TURBO) for a lot less, plus if you keep a GSi clean and tidy, I think they look newer and better than some of the new cars on the roads today!!!!!!!!!!!

Wet and dry Cavaliers handle great, you just need to fit a good performance tyre, and sort the suspension out correct. However standard not so hot.
The long wheel base of the Cavalier also helps it.

If you know where to go, ie cavweb where there are lots of people with the same or similar motors, parts are cheap!
