Very smooth, great power delivery and pleasant sound when accelerating. It's a bit thirsty but will typically do 30mpg at 80mph on motorway - urban around 26mpg - owned one since new - now 11 years old - has never let me down - is very reliable. Factory battery laster almost 10 years. Absolutely brilliant on long motorway drivers - and has superb acceletaion in 5th gear. (read more)

very dissapointed, everything seems to be going only80 on clock when bought, had top mount bushes, lambda sensor, discs, exhaust springs, drop links, abs sensors, belt tensoner, all this in only 2000 miles now key fob will not operate drivers door every fault says common fault on mk4 is that all parts then seems like it sick of it as fast as you sort one thing out something else goes oh and throttle body stripped and cleaned had a scooby turbo before only replaced plugs and leads in 2 years so... I have Volkswagen Golf MK4 V5 with a 150 horse power engine and automatic transmission.
The car runs excellent, the engine is very responsive, especially on high speeds.
Sound insulation is good, even on high speen and high revolutions it is cooperatively quiet inside the car.
The steering wheel has short ratio and a fast response, it is also quite informative.
Automatic transmission is good, gear ratios and working algorithm is okay, but it is much less reliable than the manual...

this is the third golf i've had, and the best to date. my requirements were simple - i needed a car which would enable me to fit children and dogs in, but wouldn't be drudgery for my daily commute. my previous mk 3 golf vr6 ticked those boxes, and when it was time to trade that in, i eyed up the volkswagen mk 4 golf VR5 as the logical upgrade.
the golf V5 i bought was by chance, really. it was in a local dealer and a good price (i ended up bargaining down to £2950), with low-ish miles (67k)...

I recently bought a Bora 1.8 T Bora, (good Deal) there was virbrations on the cluth and slight noise from under the bonnet; thought that one of the teeth on clutch were broken but on closer inspection the sump guard was rubbing and vibrating, loose, (like a knocking noise), aswell as brakes fixed on when pressed hard, the smell is the same as burning clutch; (The garage i bought car from fitted new pads and disks, explains it)!. The engine, well I just had to turn the music up, they... (read more)

This is the 10 valve 150bhp model. Having driven both the 1.8T and V5 these are the differences/benefits of each. The V5 benefits from improved smoothness on the road and pulls without complaint from virtually no revs. When pushed the revs climb effortlessly and progress is pleasantly rapid. Big plus of the V5 is how relaxing it is to drive, makes the drive home more pleasant. Performance wise the 1.8T is more urgent and fun to drive, however in a flat out race I doubt there would be a great... (read more)

I recently bought my Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 170bhp almost by accident - I was looking for a nice Saab 9-3 but read a lot about the cracking bulkheads which put me off! At around the same time I came upon a black 2002 3 door V5 in pretty decent condition - after a test drive, I was smitten.
The car feels immediately comfortable, everything falling easily to hand - ergononics at its best. The materials chosen by VW are excellent - the plastics feel satisfying, and even after 85k miles, there...

A smart looking car and respectable and gots lots of credit. The v5 is the best of golfs, better than gti turbo, the car is like driving a elegant car with its leather seats and fat steering wheel, with a lovely engine the power makes the blood pump round your body with excitment, most cars will be left in your dust.
Perfect car solid got loads of features and added toys and power, go easy to consume petrol but motorway drives are relaxing and leather seats make it like sitting in your lounge.

I have the 170bhp VW Golf V5 auto tiptronic 2002 mk4 model imported from Denmark with UK spec. I too have noticed vibration throughout the car as when the car is stationary and engine is running. It's a bit annoying but I can live with it. VW Slough were unable to explain - dissapointed in them. I had the car from brand new and the vibration used to be non-existant for the first 2 years or so. The vibration began to develop one autumn, and I think its slightly more pronounced during the... I bought my VW Golf V5 with an after market stainless steel exhaust (Scorpion) and it sounds fantastic. It doesn't sound rediculous, like some boy racer, but mellow and purposeful, like a proper rally car - and that's because Scorpion know what they're doing when it comes to exhaust design. Get yourself a V5 - put a good exhaust on it - have some fun! (read more)

The 2.3 V5 Golf Mark IV is a very good car that could be rare to find. It has a 150bhp 2.3 engine which has an interesting sound when revving up. it's easy to get to 190 km/h without being aware... very good acceleration. people think you have a normal golf, and you get out of their sight. My Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 really goes but doesn't run away with you. Pretty much looks like a normal Golf but has some power under the bonnet! Love it!
Why don't they make them any more? I would like another one when the one I own gets old! I'll have to save up and get R32.
Beautiful car and you can have fun behind the wheel! It's great when you're next to someone at the traffic lights, that want to race you and think you just have a normal Golf! When you leave them standing, they wonder...

I bought my Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 from a car supermarket for a very respectable £8K. The car is well balanced and handles well. Its 170bhp makes it very responsive throughout the engine range and when you reach 6000rpm a personified throaty howl comes from the engine as it crys out for the next gear. Its 0-60 is around 8 secs with a top speed of of 140mph. The mid range of the engine from 3000rpm upwards responsed quite dramatically even in 5th gear. It out performs the Golf 2.0 GTI... I brought my Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 in september 2004. I paid around 13k for it and its worth every penny. It's only a 2.3 petrol but its got 170BHP which is more than enough on british roads. It can get to 60 in about 7 secounds and I have done about 140 on the moterway.
I can get a full tank for about £45 and get 30mpg urban and about 250 motorway miles. You have got to get leathers in your golf as the seats warm up (great in winter). But the leather is appearing to have a few...

I got my Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 through my company car scheme. Having paid the premium through car tax I was pleased with the power of the engine. The HP isn't that high, but the torque, or simply mid range pull of the car is substantial.
It sits in traffic and potters round town well. But it best likes being opened up from 3,500rpm all the way up to the electronically limited 7,000rpm out of town.
The handling inspires confidence, if a little spongy, with high grip and predictable...

I bought a VW Golf 2.3 V5 in August 2003. Soon after buying the car I noticed that following a spell of rain, the brakes screech very badly when parking or pulling up to traffic lights. Sometimes they vibrate heavily. Where the brake pads come into contact with the disks, a rusty deposit forms rings on the brake disks.
I have a 3 year parts and labour warranty with VW valid until August 2006. However, each time I leave it to get it fixed at the VW garage the car comes back with the same...

Golf Driver's Comment
Written on: 28/04/2009
i can not agree with the comments of this owner that this is the best of the Golfs, as I have owned a V5, GTi Turbo and a GT TDI. The turbo model is easily the best performance wise and the 150hp diesel is a very good car with economy as well. Although the 170hp V5 is a good car, it's no match for the turbo's handling and performance unfortunately. If you want a good reliable practical car with good performance, go for the GT TDi 150HP
