I AM A GOLF LOVER HAVE OWNED 3. THE MK4 1.8T IS A LOVELY CAR TO DRIVE, VERY SMOOTH,LOVELY GEARBOX, NIPPY AND HANDELS WELL
I LOVE THE LOOKS,SEATS AND WHISTLE FROM THE TURBO. ONE THING I WILL SAY THE MK4 IS NOT AS RELIABLE AS THE OLDER ONES!! THEIR ARE MANY COMMON FAULTS ON THE MK4 (WINDOWS FALLING INTO DOOR, WATERPUMP,NOISEY SUSPENSION,)
AND IF U TAKE IT 2 VW THE REPAIRS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE.
BUT ON THE WHOLE GREAT CARS MUCH BETTER THAN FOCUS ETC

I am a hardcore VW Golf GTI fan, and have owned various throughout my 10 years of driving. I still have a 1989 16v that I plan on rebuilding when I am older and settled. The MK4 got a lot of stick when compared to the performance of the older GTI models, mainly due to the size and weight. I can elaborate on why I think this is OK. I am 28, and I purchased my mk4 second hand with very low miles and complete with all the optional extras from the factory. My first GTI, a 16v Mk2 was the opposite, the base model with high miles. It was a lot of fun, drove well and was very fast. When you compare both my GTI's there are elements from both I like, but I can say, with no uncertainty that I would choose the mk4 every time. I love the design, I love the interior quality, I love the heated leather Recaro's, I love the blue dash lights, I love the factory DSP sound system, I love the comfortable ride, I love the turbo boost, I love the traction control, I love the abs brakes, and I love the quietness of long drives.
when was 20, I had the GTI 16v mk2 and I loved the stiff suspension kit, the minimal interior items that couldn't go wrong, I loved the raw engine that growled when hard accelerating, I loved the rainbow interior trim, the centre console, the high mounted stereo, the lack of abs or TC, I loved the look of the 17" alloys and lo-pro tyres.
But what happened was, I grew up. I got past the boy racer feel the mk2 carries... the mk4 carries itself with class and pride. I can park my reflex silver mk4 GTI in a car park with a selection of other cars, and it always stands out as a classy car, it is not modified, it has standard Montreal 2 alloys, and the GTI kit that rolled out the factory. so really, the car grew up, just like I did. if I was 18 again, I would have the mk2 any day, but the mk4 has everything I need. I had some uprated suspension and roll bars added to it, and this gave it the GTI handling many people say it lacked, and a year on and I am yet to get bored. until I can afford a new mk6 GTI, I am more than happy with my mk4. When looked after, this car will go on, and on and on and on....

Here's my summary of my Volkswagen MK IV Golf GTI 1.8 turbo
What was great about it:
Build quality
Leather recarro seats
Simple / ergonmic layout of the dashboard and cabin
Practical Gti - decent rear legroom and boot
Being a VW it was realible
What was not so great about my golf gti:
Performance - the 1.8 turbo engine struggled to pull this heavy car.
Handling was a little pedestrian
The BBS alloys corroded beyond all recognition
It was very nickable...in fact it got stolen from my driveway and that was the last I saw of it.

Good performance but ugly fast car, the Volkswagen Golf 1.8T is not modern enough inside or out.

If the Volkswagen Golf is kept well maintained with attention to detail ie correct camber, toe angles, fuel injection youve got a high performance hot hatch for a couple of grand. It'll leave most things at the lights and gives good mpg, well mine does about 32 on mixed use. However, watch the brakes, upgrade them or go easy. Older ones like an octane additive it's up to you tho cos they'll perform nicely without it. A truly enjoyable car thats going to appreciate in value.

This is such a great car, the build quality is fantastic, the performance is good, but if you are lucky enough to find the 180bhp version or an anniversary edition, then the performance is more than enough. with simple styling this golf has grown up, and although alot of people would say that the classic gti has become boring, i would say it has definetly become refined.

I've been driving my Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T as a company car and have been very impressed with it. It feels great to drive, with fantastic gearshift, eager engine and superb brakes.
The VW engine is very refined and makes great noises when pushed hard. Noise supression of the chassis is great for a smaller car like the Golf.
The interior of the car is brilliantly concieved (considering the Golf Mk4's age) and is bolted together very well. The plastics are high quality, and everything is finished well. The blue dashboard lights finish it all off well!
I don't care what anyone says, a Leon is a false economy (nasty door trims for a start!!!) and the A3 is lovely, but just too dull and overpriced.
Enjoy your Golf GTI Turbo!

ive been driving my golf gti turbo for two and a half years, it is now on a 2000 plate and it is very inpresive for its age.
the build quility is second to none and looks are just spinnig heads,
perforfance is good but tends to get a bit of turbo lag in higher gears, but from a standing start it goes well,
since buying my golf i have put on some nice 18inc wheels and a boot spoiler,
and it just gets better looking (well let me just say if i was ugly the car could do the work for me )lol.
i would recomend to anyone.
