Good Points: Economical Reliable Solidly built Spacious - plenty of room for a family
Bad Points: Possibly a little bit characterless
General comments: Obviously, if you're after a ripsnorting road machine, then the Corolla - even in its sporting guise - is unlikely to be for you. As a good family car though, the 1.6 5dr version offers plenty in terms of build quality, fit and finish and space.
I came to the Corolla after a few years of being a Yaris owner. I found the Yaris to be a brilliant little car, and just wanted to go with Toyota when I upgraded in size in preparation for a family.
I am pleased to report that the Corolla confirms to me that Toyota is the best all round maker of cars currently available. Some manufacturers make more stylish cars, some make cars that are better built. But as a package the Corolla is hard to beat.
The 1.6 engine has Toyota's 'VVTi' technology - which means that its performance alters according to the way it is being driven. In theory, this means attaining the maxmum fuel economy on longer drives, whilst giving you a nice sporty feel when acceleration is necessary.
Generally, this is very true. I do a lot of motorway miles, and return very near to 40mpg, which is remarkably close to the much smaller Yaris. On the backroads, the engine can be surprisingly throaty when pushed through the corners - whilst obviously being no sports car.
In terms of fit and finish, it is hard to fault. Although there is a lot of plastic in the cabin, it doesn't have the slightly cheap feel that marred the Yaris a little bit. Legroom has proved to be ample in both the front and back, and the doors close with the same reassuring 'clunk' that we've come to associate with german cars over the years.
Overall, it isn't an innovative car by any means, but is sturdy, reliable, cheap to own and run and perfect for a small family.

The Toyota Corolla 1.6 T2 has good space for driver and passengers, very nice interior and layout around the drivers seat.
The interior material at the back window has gone loose a little - glue it on :)
I cant say anything negative other than it should not slide so much when going fast in corners :)

I have had the Toyota Corolla 1.6 T2 automatic, power steering, car from new and have never had any trouble with it. Engine starts first time, every time. Plenty of pull on hills, and very relaxing to drive on long motorway journeys. Good all round visibility, with electrically heated back window and very efficient window washers. Only bodywork needed doing has been because of prangs. I've had it serviced annually with no problems needing sorting. It is roomy inside with plenty of storage - goo ...
