Throughout about the first half of Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldan I was already planning a completely glorious review. I loved Claire's hold on her own person, character, destiny. And that made her love with Jaime, and his complete and really beautifully-protrayed love for her, all the more just right for me (a kind of take on love, also, that I hadn't before come accross, it seemed so wonderful). But then Gabaldon brought up the beating, and I stayed with the scene, holding onto Claire's strong defiance and hurt, perhaps imagining Jamie's extreme reluctance; I held on and then just could not believe it when the scene ended with such suddeness as to leave only the possibility that the beating had indeed occurred! Real Love between these two is at this point just impossible for me to believe. And then with phrases that really are only phrases that could possibly make sense in reference to a scene involving a villain, and an especially cruel one at that. i'm trying to force myself through to the end right now, although i really don't know why right now.

I have always loved Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon and always will. Its arguably the best novel i have ever read and will happily pick the book up to quiet the outside world and get lost in the 17th century enthralled by jamie and claires romance- Read Guest's review (46 words)

Amazing combination of mythology, love, war and Scottish history! Brilliant romance too, almost made me fall in love with Jamie Fraser! Well, the only bad thing about the books is the Gaelic in it, hardly any of it is spelt right! I loved it!- Read EilidhxBailey's review (44 words)

I developed a love hate relationship with this book, I totally fell in love with Jamie but there were certain parts where I found myself throwing it across the room and crying with hatred, yet the book still managed to lure me back for more. Any book that can evoke such a range of emotions from a generally unemotional person like me must be worth reading.
You must read it!- Read cotton's review (80 words)

I'm afraid I was disappointed by Cross Stitch, after hearing so many wonderful things about it. Although the romance between Claire and Jamie was sweet and quite well done, in general the writing is not of a very high standard. There was a strong current of homophobia running through the book and also a disturbing acceptance that sometimes women need to be beaten. I accept that the book is set in the past and that this was the way that men treated women, but for the hero to beat the heroine a ...- Read principessaleah's review (125 words and 2 comments)
