One of the more popular stories at Christmas time is 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. This was the first of his Christmas books and was published in 1842, seven years after the poor law was introduced. This story has great morals and this is partly the reason for there being so many adaptations of it, one of which - 'A Muppet's Christmas Carol' - has enlightened many young children before they have read the book on the Christmas spirit.
