“No help from Ford dealers regarding rust”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/09/2013

I have a Transit 260 SWB purchased new from Lindsay Ford Newtownabbey,N/Ireland,on its third test the MOT Centre advised it had bad underbody surface rust, as we were having the van serviced by Lindsays we took it to them, they advised that as we had not asked for body checks they would not help, this van was never on a building site and washed every week, we took it elsewhere and had it sand blasted and rust treated then sprayed with body wax treatment, it has since had to have welding repairs carried to driver and passenger door area underbody areas also the sills now are needing replaced, the clutch also had to be replaced and mods carried out, this van has only 12000 miles on it,

why are these vans not undersealed as standard? my van is washed nearly every week, unfortunately the sills and arches, front and rear are rusting! new gearbox at 56k, new drive shafts76k ,engine mounts, power steering pump 100k.
on the plus, great load space, copes well with a heavy load, fuel economy is very good, turning circle is unbelievable, you can spin on a sixpence.

written by Mikechen on 11/04/2009

Ford Transit 260 SWB 1998 LWB Mid roof 2.5 diesel turbo Van. Cheaply made and engineered to fail prematurely by use of sub-standard parts. Have spent $12,500 AU in repairs and replacements in the last 4 1/2 years and the van is only 10 years old!!! I have never had so much fail in a vehicle before in 35 years of driving. Ford customer service? What is that? Why are Ford allowed to sell these?

written by on 03/02/2009

I bought a Ford Transit 260 SWB with 100000 miles on the clock, and a week after the fuel pump went at the cost of £1200. 18 months later and less than 10,000 miles same thing happened again. Seemingly the pump has a guarantee period of 12 months. The pump was fitted at one of Fords main dealers didn't seem to be interested. I phoned Ford customer service, and I found them also not to be very interested. The funny thing is they would have done something about it had the van been younger than 8 years old, but since it wasn't tough luck for me.

Very very very expensive to run. I wouldn't take another Transit even if it was free. £2400 in 18months with the same fault, is more than my business can handle.

Good review. I'm still running a 1998 Transit which has been faultless in the 5 years I've had it, but I was thinking of upgrading to a newer model, butafter reading these reviews I think I will go for another make, maybe Toyota.

Ford Transit 260 75ps Do yourself a favour and stay away from this model! Ford used to make good reliable vans. What happened? They now appear to be, well, a bit troublesome and very badly finished. Its not as if I have just been unfortunate as I know courier drivers whos transits have all suffered from the majority of the aforementioned faults. Well ITS SPRINTER TIME FOR ME.In my opinion If you value your business stay well clear of it.

After owning a Ford Transit 260 for just over a year I have gone from running a fairly successful business to being almost bankrupt due to it constantly being in the workshop. The main dealers quality of work is poor, Ford customer relationship centre is a joke. Take my advice and steer well clear of any Ford vehicle.

Ford transits are the bast becasue they can carry anything anywhere. The engines are a bit lame and go louder after you have had it for about a year but the upholstery is nice.

written by dangeruss245 on 21/12/2004

Having driven transits in various guises for years, I have had a "y" plate and an "03" plate Ford Transit 260 75bhp SWB Van and I am thoroughly un-impressed. Both vans had to have brake discs fitted every 30k, the y plate had the n/s/r hub fall off completely at 82k,it needed an alternator by 85k and the central locking "plip" was un-reliable. My 03 reg van has 33,500 miles and is seldom out of the dealer. Again discs by 20k, loss of power due to chafed under-bonnet wiring, a dubious rattle from the n/s/f hub which the dealer cannot trace and I can rarely engage 2nd gear without a loud crunch, or a very sore wrist. Spend your money wisely - I dont own these vans as my work lease them. Were I to buy a van it wouldn't be one of these.

written by sk8boy1 on 04/04/2004

I bought the Ford Transit 260 Van 2 years ago and I can honestly say that it's the best van I've ever driven. I chose the 100 psi engine for the extra power, whilst still retaining the extra low load height that the front wheel drive offers. It is very fast thanks to the excellent turbo diesel and very economical. Mine is fully loaded with full steel bulkhead, electric windows, screen, mirrors and locking etc, has Aircon and tinted windows. It is so nice to drive that I got rid of my BMW and go everywhere in the Transit.

“In my opinion after driving the Ford Transit 260 for...”

★★★★☆

written by DAVE WALDRON on 16/11/2003

In my opinion after driving the Ford Transit 260 for 25,000 miles, I am very satisfied with the running costs, and the comfort levels to a point, compared to the older 2.5 transit that I covered 150,00 miles in. There is a great deal of improvments but I must say that because of every other manufacturers advancments on power levels, you always feel like your getting left behind on this model, so I would say leave this model for the cake deliveres, of the world and go for the 100 hp model or better still, go for the 125 dci model.

I have found out that there are some engine tuning mods that can be done without losing fuel economy, that can give you a power increase of between 20 & 30 horse power, the first is an intercooler kit which costs around £250.00 and would give you about 10 bhp more output. Then have an engine mapping device fitted for around £400.00 which would give you another 20 bhp giving you a total of approx 30 bhp for £650.00 money well spent I would say!

Good luck, my van is booked in for this treatment, so if you want to know how I get on , send me an email at [email protected].

Could'nt agree more Dave. I chose the 100psi engine and it's a flying machine. It leaves all but the big engine Sprinters way behind.
I also choose the steel bulkhead which keeps the cab clean and makes for a very quiet ride.
Oddly enough, I've not had the problem you refer too with the drivers seat. Maybe there could have been something bent in yours during manufacture?
In any event, I hope you have as much enjoyment from yours as I get from mine.
i have the transit st 130bhp it gives an ave.of 32mpg it hasn't had many problems with it but it has had a new driveshaft fitted after 15k but it was ex demo so i guess anybody who got behind the wheel wanted to see what it could . apart from this its been mechanically sound, although it eats front tyres and at £160 per tyre every 12k this is too expensive. the rear are fine its just the front, i had a normal transit 100bhp before this and ran it upto 160k with very little faults 1 x starter, 1 x battery i find that if you service them regular then they'll be a good van. only problem i've encountered are very poor aftersales care from ford to be honest there absolutely useless which has put me off fords and i'm considering a vw for my next new van in 2 years. but the ST has every extra available and is the comfiest van i've ever driven, you think your in a car. a great driving experience.

I have a Bi-Fuel 260 (2.3L) that gives me about 14mpg - of which 17mpg is on gas and the rest o the fuel is petrol. This translates to expensive motoring. I have been told that the Nicam Coltec system is erm..rubbish..and to replace it.
I also have a Transit 300 truck with the 2.4L 90 engine. I get a steady 27mpg out of that and no problems whatsoever except a bit of engine noise.

You mentioned good fuel economy. Can you put this into miles per gallon?
I have just aquired a Transit 330 SWB BiFuel and would appear to be getting 14 mpg on LPG. 148 miles on 48 ltrs! Not too impressive. I have a feeling that the petrol option is as bad. I will check it out after a second LPG test. Anyone any similar experiences?

I've had my transit 300 lwb for over a year now. broke down after 3 days, needed a whole new set of injectors. after 3 months had a vibration through whole van, put down to faulty drive shafts. at 4 months the drive pulley for the altinator broke, new bush's had to be fitted also. at 6 months vibration returned, new drive shafts again. Dealer replaced them but still had problem. All in all, dealer had van for 3 whole weeks to try and fix problem, still has it. When returned dealer hadn't put gators on properly, so the grease from inside went all over engine. Its been losing power now, which im told is the injectors fitted only 20000 miles ago. It has been a disaster.

Silhouette's Response to DAVE WALDRON's Review

Written on: 09/04/2004

I have had a new transit from 2000 on a 'Y' plate. Although as you say, the 100 BHP is a flying machine, it has not gone without it's problems. It was delivered with a four inch hole in the roof where the seams had'nt been welded, after four weeks the fuel pump collapsed on a long run in the middle of nowhere, and on a freezing cold morning. This apparently was a common fault, because the fuel pump is mounted on the bulkhead, the vibration of the engines plays havok with it. The first time the engine cut out and restarted after a few minutes, the Ford garage scratched their heads and said they could not find a fault, when the van broke down and I called the RAC, the patrolman knew straight away what the problem was.
Also the biggest niggle is the fact that the drivers seat reclines on it's own when driving, and almost always when you get back in the seat you have to adjust it. I am now on my fourth seat frame.
