5* CAR nominated for best FWD cars for 2001*
nothing less to say` GREAT CAR! Knifed-Edged (counterbalanced crank- ). HIGH RPM (pistons, rods, etc). Better Suspension Then The GS-R's. More HorsePower, Better 0-60MPH, Better 1/4 Mile Times.

“I bought the 2000 Honda/Acura Integra Type R as my...”

★★★★★

written by skywings on 10/12/2006

I bought the 2000 Honda/Acura Integra Type R as my second car, having owned an Integra LS previously.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE
The lightweight Type R has a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine (B18C) with the legendary Honda/Acura VTEC engaging at about 5000rpm. This is what turns an already strong engine into a screaming monster of a thing above 5000rpm. That might sound like a lot to rev a car, but with a cut out at about 9500rpm, the Type R is born to be revved!

The Type R has short gears, so be prepared for lots of gear changes in high traffic situations. I have only owned the car a few weeks, so it is not annoying me yet, but I can see many people tiring of this aspect of the gearbox. The gears are so short that it will tolerate turning in a roundabout quite well in third gear, yet, I've found that it seems more comfortable running 60km/h in fourth rather than fifth.

Even though it is not built for drag racing, what with small displacement and no forced induction, a Type R is capable of 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in the mid-6s and 0-400m (1/4mile) in the late 14s, in stock form. This is incredible for a 1.8L engine. As a point of comparison, naturally aspirated hot hatches like the Renaultsport Clio (0-100km/h in the high 6s) and the Peugeot 206 (0-100km/h in the low 7s) compete with the Type R but achieve their times with 2.0L engines. The MINI Cooper S does 0-100km/h in the mid to high 6s with a smaller 1.6L engine, but with a supercharger.

With its power derived from high revs and excellent Honda/Acura quality, buying an Integra Type R used is fairly safe, provided the previous owners have used the right products and serviced it as recommended. It is not so much of an issue worrying that a used high performance car has been totally thrashed when it is built to perform at these levels anyway.

HANDLING
Even though the Type R is a front wheel drive, the differential greatly reduces the amount of understeer. Around corners, it is almost perfectly balanced. The stiff chassis apparently has a lot of cross braces (or whatever you call them), and with front and rear sway bars and sports seats, you will barely feel the corners. I go about 40km/h around a particular corner in my LS, feeling the inertia push me aside, but around the same corner in the Type R, I am capable of 50km/h, barely feeling the inertia.

I have found steering a little heavy, but very responsive. Changing gears is a touch notchy but otherwise relatively smooth. I have not pushed its braking, but so far, I haven't had any issues with the feel of the brakes. My mom's Camry has a very spongy brake. The throttle is not too sensitive, yet you don't have to push hard to get the car to respond.

From other people's experiences, Peugeots and Renaultsports handle a little better than the good old Type R, but I believe the build quality of Hondas and Acuras exceeds French car makers, really.

INTERIOR, ACCESSORIES AND ERGONOMICS
In align with the racing image of the car, the dashboard is simple and unfussed, with only the essentials provided. There are little logos here and there, reminders that you're sitting inside a Type R, and the dash is trimmed with carbon fibre look inserts. It's a bit cheesy, but then again, if it were just black, I would complain that it's too boring. Factory standard includes Recaro racing seats, a leather MOMO steering wheel and titanium gear knob. Unfortunately, mine missed out on some cool racing pedals. Drilled brushed aluminium or something similar would've been nice.

There are electric windows and mirrors, passenger and driver airbags, a basic sound system and a factory sunroof was an optional extra. The first Integra Type Rs didn't come with air conditioning and had reduced sound deadening to keep the car light, but the special edition in 2000 and early 2001 had aircon as standard. When I bought mine, the previous owner had upgraded the sound system, so it is more than adequate for me, but I hear that the standard system is fairly average. I've found the controls on the door for the power windows too close to the driver so that you have to dig your elbow into your side to reach them. The controls for the power windows are also on the door but closer to the dashboard, so they are just fine to access.

Shoulder check vision is impaired by thickish pillars and the spoiler, but forward and side vision is fine.

The deep Recaro bucket seats in my car are black, trimmed in suede and fabric, and quite comfortable. The biggest issue with sitting in the cockpit is that it seems to be designed for average people. People wider in the hip will find the seats a little tight. Even I, at about 60kg (135lbs), found it snug. People who are short may have problems too. I'm about 160cm (5'3") and find my elbow occasionally hitting the door panel ledge when I steer. Another 10 or so cm and I would be okay. Being short, I need the seat closer to the dash to reach the pedals and the steering wheel nearly on my lap. This, combined with the high hip cushions of the deep Recaros and long doors, means getting out of the car is less than easy. Getting in is alright, although I find that the hip and lumbar cushions of the Recaros can wear quickly from the slight more effort.

Ride quality is hard and sometimes bumpy due to the race suspension set up. With reduced sound deadening and a high revving engine, the cabin noise can be loud, particularly with revs sitting about 3500rpm at 100km/h highway cruising. A sixth gear would've been nice for highway driving. For those looking for a car quite comfortable and lush, this will be a big turn off. Those who are looking for a racing experience, these "discomforts" only add to the appeal.

EXTERIOR
The Integra Type R comes in black, white, red and yellow. The paint, as with every manufacturer, is susceptible to chips. Personally, I think it looks best in black and yellow, and the stock gun metal rims suit all colors well. Again with the racing image, it is lightweight 15" in gun metal grey function over heavy 18" eye dazzling chrome bling bling.

It comes with attractive front and rear lips, side skirts, and a medium high spoiler which unfortunately impairs rear vision. It's not road scraping low, but it sits low enough for most. The wheel clearance is even all around, and again with function over style, the car handles best at this ride height over lowering the springs, according to Honda/Acura, apparently.

The Japanese version has very nice rectangular headlights while the rest of the world got the four headlight version. To each their own, I suppose, but personally, I like the JDM version a bit more.

PRACTICALITY AND RUNNING COSTS
The Type R owes part of its impressive performance to its high compression ratio of about 11.1, which means it drinks more expensive premium fuel, but people who own Type Rs are generally motoring enthusiasts who like to pamper their cars and don't mind splashing out on the good stuff anyway. When you're not pushing the car too much, it is quite fuel efficient; after-all, it is only 1.8L! But when you get addicted to the scream of VTEC, you're into guzzling territory.

It runs best on Honda oil and must be serviced at recommended intervals to ensure optimal performance, reliability and longevity. This is, after all, a modern classic you'll want to keep for a long time, especially with the news that Honda/Acura is no longer making Integras! Insurance premiums (at least in Australia) are reasonable for over 25s with no accident history, particularly when you compare with the outrageous premium for turbo charged cars.

There is adequate room in the back seat for two adults, and although I haven't sat in the back seat for any length of time, I suspect it is not nearly as comfortable as the front seats over long journeys. Getting in and out of the back seat can be challenging, as with most two door coupes. A family car this is not! The bootspace is average and the parcel shelf is a little flimsy.

OVERALL
I recommend the Integra Type R for those who are keen on performance, handling excellent engineering, fun, style and street cred, in the expense of some comforts and practicality. An absolute classic.

written by dwardo on 19/04/2005

I have had my Honda Acura Integra Type R now for a little over 6 months and I love every driving minute. When I have to get out of bed at an awfull time in the morning to go to work it makes it a whole lot easyer knowing i'll be going in my ITR. (yes even after six months). The car is a great looker aswell as spot on handling and performance. On the handling point its greatly improved if you stick on some nice rubber...(on the wheels that is :P) If you can afford one of these little Jap rockets I say GO FOR IT. Running costs are a little high as mentioned before but if you need to save a little cash you can still drive it like an old woman for good MPG. What else can I say its a lovely bit of kit. PS did I mention its great?

This Car has a 2.0 Litre engine and blows a whopping 220 Horse Power. It has racing seats and anything you can dream of in an Honda import. I think this car is their best yet, but we have the Acura RSX in America. I also won't be satisfied until the Honda Integra Type R is released in America. If you know imports, than you would know what i'm talking about...

you really don't have a clue what you are talking about, we all apreciate the engineering of an S2K n/a engine, but does that mean turbo technology is obsolete? of course not!
<br>The bottom line is turbo's are far more tuneable hence why they are popular with enthusiasts. And of course you can do any speed in a turbo in switch it off afterwards! you obviously haven't heard of a thing called a turbo timer.

In Holland they have introduced the new VW Golf with a 200hp engine, so ? Honda delivers 200 hp without a turbo. Even an old Fiat 500 with a turbo can do 0-62 under 8 secs. I don't like dissing people but all you guys (and some girls) who think turbo's and superchargers are all that.....sorry but I DON"T THINK SO. It is too easy and too simple to put a turbo or supercharger on a car to go fast. Try to do this without a turbo. Furthermore, you have to realise that you are driving a turbo powered engine. I can do 230 km/h for 2 hours and then go home, switch of the engine without having to be afraid to crash the engine. So for all of you turbo guys...no thanks.s Mike

written by Rev Man. on 03/10/2002

I've had my 2001 Honda Integra Type R for almost 3 months now and I enjoy driving every minute of it. The car handles great and you can actually feel the road surface completely. ITR can also grip corners unlike any other front-wheel drive cars that I've driven.

ITR possess two personalities while driving on the street and with traffic and on the highway. Once V-Tech is engaged, the car accelerates with lightning speed that will simply take off on most of the ordinary sport cars tailing behind you.

ITR is truly race-inspired and are not for those that prefer comfort over performance. Type R has a personality of its own. If you are buying this car for everyday commuting to work or school, I would ask you to reconsider, but for fast cruising on the highway and earning respect for driving a race car, then this is the car for you.

This car is superb. Apart from being very fast the Honda Integra Type R handles great. If you like driving fast and don't mind the exhaust sound or the wind whistling then this is the car for you. The racing clutch is a bit annoying in traffic but it is great for the open road.

I have just purchased my second Honda Integra Type R a few weeks ago. My first one (1998 championship white) was stolen by some jerk who does not have enough marbles to go get a job and buy one. Anyway, the ITR is the best car for anyone of any age. Its saucy good-looks catch the eyes of everyone, even porsche owners and, of course, the LADIES. And when vtec kicks in, it is probably the second best feeling in the world, next to... =)

My husband and I purchased our first Type R in April 2002, a 2002 Honda Integra Type R (Arctic Blue Pearl) have fallen in love with it, and if we could afford it, we would have two of them! The ride handles superbly, very fast and the only problem we have with that is speed cameras!!! Have found so far for it to be very reliable, very impressed with Honda's customer service, and love when the ivtec cuts in at around 6000 revs!

What do you mean incredible low down torque?? thats the largest draw back with the integra - having to wind it up the rev range before you really start to move. The car lacks torque, with the majority of its performance coming from bhp.

★★★★★

written by Ice. on 02/08/2002

The car is very light. Chassic is very firm, about as firm as I've ever felt a stock car. Good power throughout the gears. I think the ratios are as bit long though, but the power is utilized so it is not a problem. The car did not come with a rear wiper, clock or even lights in the trunk.
The Recaro seats are comfy but may not suit large persons. The Momo Steering wheel is a perfect 12.5", the titanium shifter is efffective if not the most comfortable. Shifting is firm, short and precise. Suspension walks the fine line between confort and stability. OZ racing rims are lightweight.
If you are used to driving other FF cars be careful - this car has less understeer tendencies. Fairly easy to control but can be tricky to get used to.

Good power, good performance, excellent handling. Fun factor is high.

The Honda Acura Integra Type R is a great car. Astounding acceleration. Solid build. Street cred. Good fuel ecomony (for a performance car). Comfortable driving position. I am really writing this review as I want peoples opinions about which tyres to buy. Should I replace the Avons with Bridgestone Potenzas? (what the car came with when new), or try somthing like Goodyear Eagle F1s? (came first in EVO's tyres test in the latest issue). I only have a few weeks to decide, so please, please take the time to reply if you have an integra or can recommend a specific tyre.

I BOUGHT MY HONDA ACURA INTEGRA TYPE R FOR £11795. THERE ARE NO CARS THAT CAN BEAT IT FOR PERFORMANCE FOR THIS PRICE. IT IS RIDICULOUS. THE ACCELERATION WHEN U HIT THE RED ZONE IS MIND BLOWNG. ONCE IT REACHES 5800 RPM, IT IS THEN THAT THE REAL FUN STARTS, THE WHEELS STRUGGLE FOR GRIP, AND ARE THEN CALMED BY THE LIMITED SLIP. IT SCREAMS AT YOU "MAKE ME GO FASTER, PUSH ME TO 9000RPM." AND YOU CAN. IN EVERY GEAR. I HAVE DRIVEN A UK SPEC IMPREZA AND A COSSIE. THE TEG IS IN THE SAME LEAGUE, AND ALL FROM A 1.8 VTEC ENGINE. THANK YOU HONDA.I LOVE YOU, I LOVE INTEGRAS, I LOVE VTEC.

Yeah...you could just swap a B18C5 into a non-vtec Integra and make the same power, but the Type-R's handling would still be way better. I heard its because the chassis is seam-welded instead of spot-welded so its a so much stiffer ride.

If to but a INTEGRA LS/RS/GSR then head to your local ACURA dealer. There should be one in every city. The best one for your buck is the INTEGRA GSR. But if you want a full blown street racer...then my advice is get a: INTEGRA TYPE R/ B18C5. These are by far the fastest 4 cylinder that HONDA has made. Except to the PRELUDE type S which houses a big block V4 which pushes out 220BHP at 7800 rpm. The INTEGRA TYPE R pushes out: 200BHP at 8500 rpm w/o breaking a sweat. Fully redline at: 10000 rpm. INTEGRA TYPE R USDM (US domestic market) left hand drive runs for about $20,000 - $30,000. But if you want to save money...go and buy a INTEGRA LS which costs anywhere to: $8,000 - $12,000...drop an INTEGRA TYPE R engine [B18C5] cost: $5,000 - $6,000 and you will have the same INTEGRA TYPE R with less $$$ spent.

written by Anthony. on 11/02/2002

I've owned my Honda Acura PY 2001 Integra Type R for nearly a year now, and I've loved all 14,000 miles I've put on it thus far. It's the fastest STOCK front wheel drive car in the world. With just a good I/H/E setup a Apexi VAFC, a fuel pressure reg., and some good tuning you'll see mid to high thirteens in a 1/4 mile run, and that's on street tires. The real performance of the Integra Type R shines on a heavy turning road course, such as the ones found at a auto-x. That's where the real fun begins. You can't go wrong with an ITR, enjoy.

For the true racing enthousiasts with limited funds, I order you to buy this Honda Acura Integra Type R car. New or old, it does not matter-a Honda/Acura engine lasts forever. Even if the 6.5 second time from 0 to 62 mph does not amaze you I have to remind you this is a FF car! And it feels a lot faster. Handling is pin sharp and changing gear never felt better. I once drove a Porsche Carrera 4 and it made me realise the Integra is something special. The Porsche felt extemely boring compared to my Integra. And if you're a tuning fan you couldn't have bought a better car. My Integra has now has 330 hp with the help of a supercharger and it has a topspeed of 195 mph (I also changed my gears) and its acceleration is just sickening! Anyway the Integra type R is a great car which I can recommend to any racing enthusiast.

I agree that the ITR is the best all round car you could get if you are a racing enthusiast. The car is damn sexy and comes with great features in stock form (momo steering wheel, knob, recaro seats). The VTEC engine works like charm and truly has that jekyl/hyde personality when it switches between stages from efficient car, to smooth criminal speed demon after blasting past the 5500 rpm mark on the taco meter. The car has gorgeous looks and the interior is nice and appealing. Get this car, it has all the good things you would want in a car.

I totally agree on this revieuw, it's the best car ever! If you haven't got a big budget and want a thrill, this is the car for you! I have orderd NOS for my car and it should have 260 Bhp, I can't wait! Only one downside by the way, the engine has trouble with dirty fuel!!! I have ran my fuel tank nearly empty twice and I have had to have it cleaned twice because it kept stalling....Just watch out for that they are sensitve.

OK, you idiots, the Honda Acura Type R coupe is the only automobile that can even think to compete with the original E30 M3, if you are old enough to know what that is. I own a 2001 Yellow ITR and it is by and far the beast Acura meant it to be. There may be faster cars out there, but none with the over-all performance of the ITR. If you are lucky enough to own one hang on to it, it will become a classic. And for those that modify it, good luck, you just devalued a great car.
