This novel was set during the time of World War II in a private boarding school, Devon School, which was in England. The main protagonists, Gene and Finny become very good friends. But Gene begins to envy Finny's astounding athletic skills and begins to jepordize there friendship with an act that came out of pure jealousy. This novel teaches a good lesson on how jealousy is not good in a friendship and how it is hard to even trust your best friend. Overall this is a very good story.

I would not recommend this to anyone. I am sure part of the reason I did not like it is because I had to read it for school, but still it was impossible to find anything good about it.

In John Knowles' A Separate Peace, Gene and Finny are 16 year old students at a boarding school named Devon. Throughout the book jealousy over takes friendship, and results in a strange death.

In John Knowles' A Separate Peace the story begins in a sleepy town of Devon...and not much else happens from there. The two boys, Gene and Finny, travel through many hardships as friends, if you could even call them that. The one episode of actual interest drags on throughout the entire book, and eventually serves as the ending, which was pretty much expected from the context. Most of the chapters could simply have been taken out and one would still have gotton the general main idea.
