Good Points: build, attention to detail and robust peformance.

Bad Points: inability to play a host of other fomarts. lack of RGB/ component video outputs.

General comments: have you taken a look at this beauty? it is simply impressive, the sheer bulk, the laid back aristocratic mein and the arrogant champaign gold color all set this unit apart. the sound and picture are well above average. overall performance is, while not excellent, will give many more expensive players a run for their money. i was especially thrilled when i hooked up the Monster power centre mains conditioner, i experienced pure cinema ambience. i have always wondered wether i could trade the pioneer dv-717 for anything else. i use the Yamaha DSP AX 1 in the same champaign gold color. this machine is a mature and experienced piece of art...for the pure in heart.

It's a few years down the line since the DV-717 was produced, so how does it compare to current Pioneer DVD players?
Well, you can forget PAL progressive scan & DVI-D scart sockets as technology has moved on a pace, however having worked in the A/V trade for several years I would STILL consider this a great DVD player. If you require an all singing, all dancing DVD player in order to play the vast array of DVD+-R, DVD+-RW, DVD Audio, JPEG, MPEG, WMA or other types then you'll find major draw b ...

I have absolutely no reservations about recommending this Pioneer DV717 DVD player to anyone. Have the plugin chip fitted by Techtronic.com, sit back and enjoy it. The sound is fabulous and the picture very good, I've just changed mine after 3 years, but, it took a £1100 Toshiba 900 to impress me enough to do it.

I've viewed films on the budget players before purchasing this machine & I thinks it's in a class of it's own. The picture & sound quality, especially through a Dolby Digital Amp, is outstanding. I haven't had any problems with lip sync even after the layer change (all you get there is a slight pause & fade).
It's more expensive than the rest but its definately been worth every so far.
It can only be described as a "must have" item.
