My only serious complaint about the Toshiba SD-22VB is I'm having trouble playing DVD-R discs (which it's reported to support). Any advice welcome! It's Generally easy to use. DVD playback and video recording quality v.good. But it has a complex remote. Some set up difficulties. Problems playing DVD-R. (read more)

The Toshiba SD-22VB is a great DVD/VCR Combi once you get used to the complicated recording set up. The problem is that it keeps switching itself off when you have gone to bed. It seems it can't comprehend the concept of recording through to a new day. The DVD failed after half a dozen films and the engineer who came to mend the thing advised that the laser is "done". Apparently a known fault acknowledged by Toshiba, but it will cost £75 to get exchange - Some customer service? I am very... (read more)

This is one lovely machine....
Straight out of the box connect it to the satellite box and TV, switch on and away you go - fully auto channelized and clock updated.
Note:- the clock remains updated throughout use.
The VCS records and plays beautifully - I have some very old tapes that on other machines they record quite badly, but put these tapes in the Tosh and you would not believe what you see or hear (crystal clear).
Providing you can find a tv program that offers Programme Delivery...

Dear Kerry D,
Thank you for your reply.
In answer to your request, the use of 'Video CD's were mentioned within the review.
Video CD's (VCD) play with this unit faultlessly on major labels available throughout the high street. My only areas where you may be finding problems is either:-
a) The CDR media used for producing the VCD is of a low quality - Have you tried this VCD in a different DVD player?
b) Are you sure when you state 'Video CD's' you are not relating to 'Super Video CD's' (SVCD) - If your video files have ben recorded by someone else this format (SVCD) is used prominently in the Eastern sector for making movie files. The SVCD format is not supported by this unit.
c) If you are still unable to resolve the problem - Have you considered the unit may be faulty.

If the issue lays with SVCD being your requirement then another unit that I can reccommend is the 'JVC HR-XV2 Combi Unit.
This unit carries all reccommendations from this review PLUS has the added benefit of supporting SVCD.

I managed to get hold of my sd22vb for £119.00 (graded stock, but fully guaranteed) at Richer Sounds.
I am very impressed for the price.

My Toshiba SD-22VB DVD/VCR has developed a couple of faults - both of which could be caused by corrupted firmware.
(1) Using Video+ codes to set VCR recordings, some of the channel numbers get corrupted - e.g. ITV channel 3 gets stored as channel 53.
(2) Last week it started recording a program OK to VCR - then switching to standby after a few seconds of recording.
Is there any way of re-downloading the firmware to remove the corruption?

It's fairly high spec for the money. I got mine from comet store £199. It was cheaper in the store than on-line. It is reasonably easy to use. I got it yesterday, so far the quality seems good. When I got it home I realised it is bigger than it looked in the store. The remote uses Black and orange letters. The orange ones are real hard to read and my eye sight is good. For me, this is the best Combination unit for the money. If there was any doubt then that would be getting two separate... (read more)

I agree with most of your comments, however I am unable to get my machine to play video Cd's. Have you tried this facility and if so does it work?
