Good Points: Good looking, Enough performance to put a smile on your face, and good fuel consumption - 40mpg around town and 50+ on the motorway.
Bad Points: Slightly fiddly heater controls but OK once you get used to them. Gear stick that refused to spring back to the centre of the box when in neutral. I thought that it was my car at first but I have had three in total now and all have had the same problem. It doesn't affect the gears at all though and can be driven like this for many many miles.
General comments: I have had 3 Diesel M-jet's and struggle to find anything else that I would consider as an alternative - certainly not a golf or A3 - as the looks and styling make the car a real head-turner with a bit of well needed individuality in todays sterile mass produced world. If you are considering buying one check that ALL of the electrics work and that the book has Alfa dealer stamps in it, NOT 'Joes garage' from down the road - anyone can get a stamp made up.
If it weren't for the gearstick issues this car would get a '10' every time.
Maybe, when I'm bigger, I might try the 156 estate (Diesel M-jet of course).

Having had the car for over 3 and 9 months I thought an update was in order! yes we did regret buying it at first but once all the teething problems were sorted it has been a fantastically reliable car!!! honestly we have not had a thing go wrong since (touch wood) and its expensive stylish looks must of been way in front all those years ago as they have not dated one jot! it still feels as expensive and new as it did when we first got it and yet its over 3 years old.

Enjoyed every mile driven in this Alfa Romeo 147, can be a harsh ride on factory 17" rims, reasonable performance, but could have done with an extra 50bhp to keep up with the flow.
Economy can be very poor, down as far as 20mpg, but top side on a motorway cruise at a steady 55 to 65 can be as good as 45mpg. Looks stunning, real head turner. Would definitely have another. New model interior is not as nice. Major service (cam belt and variator) £400 to £600, minor service £250 ...

I've had my 147 Lusso for coming up to 3 years and not a thing has gone wrong; not even a blown bulb. This was in contrast to my previous car, a 156 which was troublesome. It is very economical to run and I've got up to an average of 35mpg for motorway driving and about 21mpg in town. I just think that it is a great car for me. For someone who wants a punchy small car I think this is ideal. I have had 3 Alfa's and this was the best.

Originally delighted with my purchase, I soon became disillusioned with Alfa. During the 63000miles I had my Alfa Romeo 146 2.0 Lusso I had the engine tray fall off, and brake cables come loose beneath the car (I see this on all Alfas when I drive behind). I replaced around 3 litres of expensive recommended oil every 1000 miles. Then the timing belt went at 60000 miles, wrecking the engine! great!

My initial favourable impressions of the Alfa Romeo 147 have been replaced with dissatisfaction.
The ride has always beeen a bit uncontrolled: despite new bushes thoughout it is now still useless and it jitters around all over the place, at least it did until the engine expired with a broken cam belt at 59K. Alfa Romeo say that the replacement mileage of 72K is not mandatory. If they really mean 36K, then they should say so and refund the cost of the rebuild. Stay away from this car unless Alfa ...

My Alfa Romeo 147 is just over 3 years old and the car has been completely reliable during this time. The handling is extremely good and the steering is very quick (fewer turns lock to lock than most cars) all of which means that the car is a joy on back roads and twisty roads.
There is no obvious power band and the engine is very smooth courtesy of the twin balancer shafts. The engine is very willing to rev and people who are new to driving the car often finsd themselves hitting the rev limi ...

The front electric windows were stuck, fortunately in the closed position and remained totally unmoveable for the first few months of the Alfa Romeo 147 2.0 Lusso 5dr sports cars life, we had working windows for a few weeks then they packed in again. Fortunately it has aircon or I may have melted to death on one or two of the hot days we have had this year but unfortunately the air con also had a mind of its own along with an occasional strange smell too.
The paintwork developed blemishes i ...

My Alfa Romeo 147 2.0 Lusso 5dr is now just over two years old and It's done 33K miles, mainly because I enjoy driving it whether I'm going to the north of Scotland or to the local ASDA. I like the way it drives and I like the way it looks. I had some initial problems with the Alfa dealer who just didn't do what they said on the tin. I then went to a different Alfa dealer and had very few problems with them. I think the bad reputation is down to individual dealers rather than specifically Alfa d ...
