“Really great bike”

★★★★★

written by AidanBauer on 01/07/2015

I have had one of these bikes for a number of years now. It was brought second hand and I spent a bit on new parts. I use it 2/3 times a week for off road giving it a load of stick. It is by far the best bike I have ever had. I have used it as well for road riding and due to its lightness does a really good job. I would highly recommend this bike to anyone looking for a good alround bike.

“The Specialised Hardrock XC are very well designed bikes.”

★★★★★

written by Meadow269 on 29/05/2014

These bikes are 'Engineered'. The people who designed these bikes know what there doing. Everything on the bike is engineered from the light weight frame, to the wheels and tyres, to the shocks to the gearing and seating. There very light and comfortable to ride. They are built for speed. Very enjoyable to ride. I have other bikes, but the Specialized Hardrock is by far the best out of them all. They don't look that much different from the other bikes, but the difference comes when you ride it. For comfort and quality - The Specialized Hardrock XC far outstrips the other bikes I own and ride. If you go to the specialized hardrock official website, you can read up on all the engineering that goes into bringing you these bikes.

“best mtb for the money”

★★★★★

written by jayshrsport29er on 27/12/2013

This bike is built like a tank, tough as nails, and surprisingly light after some key upgrades. I have the 2012 sport disc 29er and I love it. It's such a great ride and I wouldn't sell it for anything. The first few upgrades I made were to the seat, pedals, grips and fork. The stock forks are junk! I replaced it with a rockshox XC 32 TK with 100mm. of travel and solo air, wow what a difference! Other upgrades include hope tech evo X2's with hope lightweight floating rotors, Thomson elite seat post and stem, raceface riser bars, odi rouge locking grips, shimano crankset, red straitline platform pedals (sick)! lizard skins chainstay protector and fork boots. Stans ztr arch ex29er wheels with s-works purgatory tires, bontrager under seat bag with emergency flat repair kit. specialized sonoma seat. next upgrades include a Chris King headset, sram X9 shifters and front and back mechs, hope bashguard and poplok remote for the fork. I know it's a bit overboard but I'm a heavier rider that rides aggressively so I need the majority of my upgrades to make sure my bike can handle my riding style. In all I would highly recommend this bike to anyone regardless of them being a novice or beginner. Get a hardrock, you won't be disappointed.

“It's SpecialZ!”

★★★★★

written by ChrisBradley on 15/11/2013

Having owned a Specialized bike for over 10 years now I was not surprised in the slightest that this was a top notch bike. However, up until now I've only ever had their road bikes, but after watching the mountain biking at the Olympics I caught the bug! As with most bikes it took a little while to get the set up just right, but then you wouldn't drive a car without adjusting the seat and mirror, and bikes are just the same! For anyone considering it, the ride is smooth and build quality superb! Well worth a few quid more.

I've toured on a stock mid-90s hardrock for over 1,000 miles. There's no better rugged bike for the money.

“Great Value”

★★★★★

written by John-Mark-Philips on 31/05/2013

I've always been a big fan of Specialized - they're clearly a company who know what they're doing... after all they have bikes in the Tour de France (not this one!), so they should have a great idea of what they're doing. I've had a ton of fun with this mountain bike - I had a few issues with the gears initially, but I soon fixed them, it was just a matter of getting the tuning right, and it's dead simple if you ask nicely in a bike shop to get it sorted. Smooth ride. Recommended!

“best bike ever!!”

★★★★★

written by on 05/04/2013

holds up to anything I throw at it. I've proably biked thousands of miles on that thing. The paint hardly ever scratches and it's all around a great bike. The gear changes are a little bit shaky esspecially 2-1 on the right side, and the tires suck for what I put it through too soft of a compound. But don't let me disscorage you from buying this bike, It's great.

I changed my mongoose 250 for a hardrock and it was one of my best moves ever! it's like giving away a kia for a mercedes. It's fun, easy, durable, everything u want for leisure and commuting. It feels like a part of your body. From the very first moment u feel comfortable and sure to do what u want. Definitely recommend it

i rode this bike for about ten minutes and i loved every second of i was in town when my mum saw a freind i asked for a go on the bike and i didnt get off it untill the second he chased me around town centre although the price bites a big hole in your pocket but tbh it is worth it .... the suspension is grat aswell while i was riding around in a circle i was bouncing up and down on the suspension and it was just great if i had gone over a speed bump i wouldnt really ntoice it thats how great it was..... the frame is a beautifull frame and is suitable ... the saddle (seat) of the bike is really comfortable and adjusting the seat is as easy as 123 my mums freind lowered it seconds i got on and rode off ..... for the ride it is a smooth ride and feels great to ride and i would not be inbarrassed to be seen on it people may belive it is ugly but it rides like a beauty thanks rob

“starter mountain bike”

★★★★☆

written by tgoutdoors on 01/05/2012

bought the 2011 hardrock sport disc,(hot uk deals £370.00) and its a massive improvement on anything else ive ever ridden, but it didnt take long before i wanted to upgrade things on it. the forks are pretty naff, i ride xc mainly and drop offs larger that 5 inches and rocky sections are pretty scary with only 80mm of travel to hide behind, yes the tyres are great on roads but not on muddy rocky trails. to be fair this bike is marketed as a commuter/trail bike and on the road its ok, although ive got a hybrid and its much better and faster on roads so i wouldnt recommend it as a commuter bike unless you rode mixed terrain to work or school. all that said ive rode this bike loads and before i knew the difference that upgrading the tyres(continental rubber queens) and upgrading the forks would make (suntour epicon rld) ive enjoyed myself immensely, the frame is great it makes the bike feel really aggressive and its easy to throw around and the bb5s once youve got them set correctly are pretty sharp on short blasts through a forrest xc downhill section, i would recommend this bike to anyone who wants to get an idea of what a decent mountain bike feels like, but im sure after riding this bike for a while you,ll want to upgrade the parts or get a more expensive bike

i just tried out this bike, and it's absolutly amazing,
on the road aswell as off road, unfortunatly i only rented it, but looking forward to purchase,
i took it climbing and downhilling on some very nasty terrain and the bike kept up his end of the bargain, changing gears (even with dirt) is allmost flawless and it's very fast (and light) on asphalt to overall a great bike i can reccomand to anyone

Great starter bike. I have had for 2 years. Crank and chainrings could be better as they bend with powerful climbing. Frontfork is great. Sun tour. Cassette and chain both changed within 6 months. Front and rear deraillers are good for street ridinig, but not appropriate for Mountain biking.

Great for the price. Could upgrade, but will sell and get a better lighter frame after 3 years of riding. Happy overall.

“Has something happened to Specialized's wheel makers?...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 14/07/2009

Has something happened to Specialized's wheel makers? I used to have a 2000 Hardrock and used it for commuting around London for 7 years. The wheels just kept on turning - till the rims wore out simply from braking. That was OK - I'd got more than 10,000 miles out of them. My son also has an older Hardrock and hammers it round a mountain bike course every weekend, again without any problems.

Recently I got a new Hardrock - the 09 pro disk model with Alex Rims. Within four months the rear wheel has collapsed with three broken spokes. I have only used it for commuting in London. Looking at the spokes I can see why - they are much thinner and flimsier than the old ones.

What's more, this is the second Specialized bike I've had to have suffered a rear wheel collapse. The last one was a Rockhopper comp. I keep it for mountain biking but it too was less than a year old and had hardly been used. And I'd kept checking spoke tension.

I think Specialized have either skimped on the wheels or chosen a bad supplier. Either way it could be that you'd be risking a lot of hassle and cash if you go for the current Hardrock and Rockhopper models.
