Iain M. Banks, Consider Phlebas - It has been so long since I have read this book I usually make a point of coming back and reading books I particularly loved, unfortunately my copy was lost by my brother in some scummy part of Sunderland (I almost rang his neck). No worry though, I'll find another copy with that fantasy cover that you don't quite understand until you start reading it.
One massive thing I really hate about this book and most Banks books in general is how much you get to know the characters (described in colourful detail) and then they either get killed off in spectacular and unjustified ways (like real life really, no Hollywood here) or he ends the book the same way you would end it with a particularly annoying lover, by tearing them apart from the world they've grown so used to. This is why I end up reading the good ones again, because it's like coming back to a friend after years of separation, nostalgia, they're just the way you left them until you read on and it all happens again.
Oh well, couldn't feel so much for them if he wasn't a good writer and I hate happily ever after anyway.
Consider Phlebas will completely screw you up, no human or even changling alive can endure what Banks puts his characters through and even though you're feeling this secondhand you still get the adrenalin rush.
There's no point me going into the storyline about the war, Bora Horza Gobachul our hero or Belvada because it won't make any sense or even feel the same until you imerse yourself in it. I don't want to deprive you of that feeling.
