“Works well for me when I need a car”

★★★★★

written by adventuretwins on 28/08/2012

I've been using whipcar for about 6 months, and have rented a car half a dozen times since then. There are quite a few cars in my area but I've stuck to the same two owners now that I know them. It took me a couple of attempts to get my first rental sorted but I found that sending the owner a message introducing myself helped and once I had one good review on my profile, I didn't have any more delays. I can understand why some owners would be nervous and, as I need a car quite regularly, it was worth a bit of effort upfront. I rent a decent Golf or Focus from a few streets away and it costs about £25 less than it would from hertz etc. Hope this is helpful.

“Too good to be true!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 24/08/2012

Came across whipcar and thought WOW what a great idea! I needed a car urgently to drive down to London for a day as my car is too old to make the journey. I signed up and followed all the procedures to become a member which only took a couple of mins, I was really impressed! I then began searching for cars, some of which were lovely; a convertible mini cooper and the brand new KA for as little as £30 a day and just down the road! So I 'booked' the cars I fancied which involved sending a request to the owner for them to either accept or decline. In total I booked 9 cars and either they were ignored or declined (they automatically get declined if no response within 2 hours). I have been driving over 40 years and have never had any endorsements on my license, so was really confused as to why they were all getting declined. What is the point in taking time to add your car for people to rent if you're not going to respond? If the same were to happen on a website such as ebay, you would be given negative feedback, and i think this is something Whipcar seriously need to consider introducing. I wasted an entire evening applying and waiting for responses, only to be let down. After all the drama I ended up going to a car rental firm who could rent out a car for me in 10 minutes!! I would not recommend this site to anyone who is looking for a quick fix car as you have no chance and are wasting your time. Would be a really great company if it worked, but people are just not reliable enough!

“I'm an owner”

★★★★★

written by on 30/06/2012

I have been using Whipcar for coming up to two years now as an owner of a car, and it is now paying for itself. When I started out, I had one or two careless drivers, but Whipcar have improved the vetting process and I too have restricted the drivers I rent to (eg no under 25s). I keep my car cheap so as to be value for money and so it is always in demand. It's a new small company, and a concept that I really want(ed) to work and so I took a risk, and it is paying off. Once rented successfully, I offer discounts to good drivers to keep the price low enough to more than compete with the big hire companies.

“worked for me”

I have had four bookings and made £316. I read these reviews and they made me super cautious on which bookings I accept but no problems so far.

“Driver returned car late at night with empty tank”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Joninlondon on 14/05/2012

I rented my car out to a 25 year old. He called 10 minutes before the rental saying he was running late and could I pick him up from the station. No wanting hang around all day I drove to the station and after an hour 4 young giggling lads appeared with golf clubs, threw them in the boot and drove off crashing over a speed bump when they did. They were due back at 8pm and when they were late I had to arrange insurance for them with whipcar to cover the extra time. When they did speed into the drive way they piled out, still giggling and I ask had they filled the diesel up... no and could they just pay to my bank account tomorrow and if we don't feel free "to sla* us off on the site". So after paying their fuel I cleared about £15 to let some idiots treat the car badly and have a worried Sunday calling insurance companies. Really not worth it...

“No rentals so far”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 07/02/2012

As we've got a car standing idle I thought I'd put on Whipcar. In 4 months n rentals at all. Can't imagine the company is doing much as most vehicles around me haven't been rented either.

it's because .. with all the additional add ons, they are the most expensive car hire company around .. or nearly .. no value for money involved here, so what is the point? Also , people hiring their cars are charging as much if not more than a regular car hire service .. again .. eh .. what is the point?

“WHIPCAR - DAMAGE CAR + BAD SERVICE = OUT OF POCKET. I...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ezyd on 04/05/2011

WHIPCAR - DAMAGE CAR + BAD SERVICE = OUT OF POCKET. I believe I am Honest and fair man. I work hard to earn the things I have. I changed job recently and as a result I got a luxury company car as part of the package. so my recently bought beloved BMW saloon was left at home only coming out rarely on the odd Sundays whilst still paying a insurance premium. I came upon Whipcar purely by chance, and just like you are now, thought this is amazing, that such service are available. I thought I could make use of my spare Car and boost my income in these economically difficult times by having my car work also. Being a caution person by nature I was highly sceptical and I was reading up everything thing and googling review by previous customer but I didn't see any! Which was weird, I read up on them in a few reporters article and it seems that they were fairly new. So I thought why not, lets give it a try. I signed up my car, gave my details, uploaded picture of the BMW everything done in a matter of minutes. Majority of the cars on there was your average Peugeot, Vauxhall, Ford ect Within a couple of hours of being on the website I had a booking request for my car 2 days for £130. I thought Wohhh, happy days. Sure enough I followed the process, did everything I was meant to, had the car valet the night before the driver was meant to collect. The car was shinning! Driver came to collect in the morning I checked his id as per process I walked him around the car and confirmed the car was flawless. Showed him the press start ignition, sat nav ect. All was well. The car returned after the agreed hire period straight away walking to collect the car I spotted damages. I confronted the driver about it and he pretended not to have noticed anything! As if he was blind. He had the cheek to say that it was there when he took the car! Anyways thinking that insurance is covered I called Whipcar straight away! From then on the nightmare started. Getting hold of someone at Whipcar is impossible! They have an agent call centre company that answer phone calls on their behalf, So basically they take your details and email it to someone in Whipcar that is suppose to call you back! That call never comes! Numerous call attempt later you get a email from someone Called **** ( No Last name, tittle or details). To summarise below - They sided with the Driver. They suspend your account without notice or explanation if you dare make to claim whist still allowing the driver to carry on booking other vehicle. They are unavailable and highly secretive. They use no fullnames, no title, no contact details except that of their call centre. They are late in paying you money owed. ( I had to chase 6 times before finally being paid.) After weeks of unsuccessful telephone attempt, emails & messages! I decided to write to their Director( Via recorded delivery) to this day I have never receive a reply from them. I tried Whipcar and got burned. A Very good business model but incompetent staff and bad customer services makes it a nightmare experience. My personal advice, if you have a decent car STAY CLEAR!
