“Nice perfomance bad handling”

Written on: 24/12/2012 by Nonegiven (2 reviews written)

I would like to know what other cars the reviewers have driven? I have never driven a car that handles so badly in my life and I have driven lots of cars. I would not risk my life taking a mini round the corner at high speeds. A ford focus zetec mk2 handles 100% better than a mini. The perfmance is fantastic but it is of no use with such poor handling. Some cars handle better than they perform but others like the mino perform better than the handle and that is the worst thing a car can do.... (read more)

“Best car I've owned - 2011 Cooper”

Written on: 28/04/2012

I LOVE this car.. the only thing that bothers me is the hesitation I'm finding between gears (automatic). I'm used to a 6 cylinder so that may have something to do with it but EVERYTHING else is GREAT. I also splurged on the cooper connect (which is the new iphone connection with nav screen on the center counsel). It was well worth it (since i'm an iPhone addict). I have had the car nearly a year now and filled it up probably once... JK! I love the milage on this thing... i went from... (read more)

“great drive but poor design”

Written on: 29/02/2012

Don't get me wrong I love driving my 2010 mini clubman S and I love the way it looks. I have to say a major deterrent for repurchasing the same model is to never get the performance package !!!!! The front bumper is soooooo low that when I pull out of my driveway which is very low, the bumper has come off 3 times and one time pulled the sensor completely off so I was not able to get any airconditioning. I went over a pot hole and the entire front bumper cracked in half and I had to pay... (read more)

Bought my brand spanking new 2011 mini cooper s 2 months ago (R56). Live in Cape Town, South Africa. Pity our fuel is so expensive...this car wants to be driven. It shouts at me for cruising about and screams to drive it hard. Though rather fuel efficient if driven conservatively, but who cares, it brings about a smile when i approach it, when i enter the cockpit it yells at me to start it and when i drive it, it asks to embrace the fear factor, cause it sticks to the tar on bends, on tight... I love the Mini Cooper S. I race it and it can keep up with the high hp cars on the turns and even pass them. It does lack on the streight aways though. That is something you should work on. Many girls at my school think it is "cuite" and "great size". If you are looking for a car that gets great mileage, take turns like a gocart, and a great price. Mini Cooper S is your choice. The best car I've ever driven.period. I've driven lots of sports cars but the MINI Cooper S is the only car which you can drive with confidence whilst travelling at speed. The handling is just amazing, the steering works as quick as you can move your arms. I've driven cars with crazy accelaration, much faster than the Cooper S, but I would still choose a Cooper S; its good on fuel, quick, low road tax, stylish ..and above all, fun. (read more)

The mini cooper S is a great car for those who want to have fun driving down country lanes and also want a practical commuter car. The build quality is great although the centre console does creak when cold.

Mini's aren't cheap but the residuals mean that when you do come to sell it you aren't going to lose a great deal. With BMW build quality bits aren't going to fall off along the way either.

This is the Mk1 BMW mini so it is the supercharged version. Whilst this gives you great... (read more)

I bought my Works Cooper S in May of 2004 and now have approximately 80,000 trouble free and totally enjoyable miles on it. Had my Mini Cooper S now three years and it has been a great car to drive and nothing has gone wrong with it (so far). It's handling is the best thing about it and I liken it to a big go-kart as it does take corners superbly. Long journeys are great in it which I was a little sceptical about it when I first bought it as I though I might feel cramped etc but the seats provide excellent support.

As a lifelong Mini enthusiast, I suppose I am biased, having always had at least one Mini since early 1963. These have covere every thing from the Minivan, through modified 850cc, 998 Cooper and highly modified Cooper S - original type. Just over a year ago I changed my BMW 545 4.5 litre for a Mini Cooper S with all the extras including Sat Nav, Bluetooth telephone etc. - It cost £22,000 in all and was worth every penny.

The car certainly has the GRIN factor - I've done 22,000 trouble free miles and enjoyed every minute. The BMW 545 was obviously faster, more comfortable and performed very well but it didn't have that man with machine feel, in fact it was a bit like driving a fast feather bed. WOW the Mini is great.

The Mini Cooper S convertible is without doubt the most hilarious car I ever owned. When I hit a kangaroo in my SL600 it cost me $28000 to fix. In the Mini you just steer around it no matter how fast you're going. Not rip snortingly fast in a straight line, but plenty fast enough, and if you can find a better handling car for under a hundred grand, let me know. Oh, and the roof doesn't leak. I always enjoy making grocery runs in the Mini Cooper S, just to get behind the wheel. The interior is pretty neat, like a retro spaceship, but as said above, it has a lot of rattles. If necessary, you can fold down the rear seats, and the little MINI can actually hold a fair amount of cargo. Ive been able to fit an entire drum set in there. Very solid build, brisk accleration from 0-90, u can almost get 50mph out of 1st gear if you ask it nicely!

16's are definitley best- the MCS does lose a bit top end but thats because it's supercharged- connected directly to the crank, so what you gain at the bottom end- you lose at the top end although BBR are very good and can uprate the Supercharger with very good results. Still, if you are racing a modded 172/182 Cup you will need more power to beat it but a standard one you will beat with a 200+bhp MCS.

Written on: 29/03/2005

Great review, the Cooper S is a truly good car. I am an owner of a Skoda Octavia vRS Turbo and so I am always on the lookout for potenetial rivals which I love to compare to mine. Now the Cooper S is perhaps a car you buy with your heart, not your quite your head: other rivals offer more space, refinement, even performance etc... Fine, you'll appreciate the handling of the S more so than my Octavia vRS, but while both of them are in standard form, the S's 163 bhp is just not as effective as my 180 bhp (Autocar mag tested the vRS as 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds). And the vRS costs less brand new (no, I'm NOT boasting!). I've had many encounters with the S- and it is by no means an easy advesary, in fact it is a highly surprising and dangerous one, but I have emerged victorious each and every time on the motorway. In the city however, I bow down to the Mini's agility and nippy characteristics. When you do your conversion however to get it up to 220 bhp or so, I expect that it will become a true super pocket rocket. 6 seconds 0-60 mph is easily reachable and provided your gears are fettled with, your S should be capable of a potential 150 mph give or take a few mph. Couple that to the Mini's small body and then you will have an allround killer. After that, your little Mini will be practically unstoppable, no doubt you already know that...I'm now cursing under my breath with envy! Good luck with it and happy motoring. :)

I agree, had one for 14 months and am ready to leave it by the side of the highway with the keys in it.
I have humming noises too, at 60 M/PH, mine is a 2005 model, had dash ripped out and foam put it to silence the squeaks, steering vibrations no matter how many times you rotate and balance wheels, engine mount replaced (engine was too rough and sending knocking vibrations throughout car), fixed now. Had front right headlight replaced due to faulty stamp of moulding (was sticking out), steering is predictable but very rough going over bumps. My suspension started to squeak and the air condition compressor shakes the entire car including my seat, feels like a bed in cheap motel that has coin operated vibration option. To sum it up, this car is the worst car I have ever owned, and yet to have an enjoyable moment with it, but locked into a lease for another 24 months. I use the car to get to work. The longest trip was 2 hrs tops. I would never risk my life in this car on a 5 hr trip to some other city.

If anyone is willing to spend money on getting the works tuning kit fitted to their Copper S, then they'll be willing to spend money on getting the West Tung kit fitted.
The west tuning kit costs around £5,500, I know that does sound a lot but you get 240 bhp 207 lb of torque.

I am flabbergasted by the 18 slams on Mr. Oneill.

I don't own the Mini Cooper S due to my extended test drive of one and of the of various alternatives some with much more enthsiast appeal and the feeling that the S fell far short of what it could have offered the enthusiast. Cars are a big investment. Time should be spent testing as many alternatives as possible to be able to make a really informed purchase. Having tuned old mini's I think the main problem with the new Minicooper S is that it is a BMW. The old minis were so much fun to drive and one of the best cars to learn about handling, I had them sideways on a number of occasions. BMW's are refined heavy and well built, they are not usually associated with fun driving, other than the m3. So when you combine the two there are some contradictions that don't fit well.
I have to agree-why did they not put a turbo on the car instead and did they really think 163bhp would be enough in light of the forthcoming 200bhp Civic, 206 180 and now 182 clio?
I haven't driven the MCS but I have driven the Civic and it is mental, i'm absolutley convinved that there is no way the MCS will keep up with this car (or the clio cup) on any road.
So now there are various tuning kits available (works) but they cost 2-3k, so if you want a really good mini you have to pay £18,000 which is also the same price as the 225bhp Leon Cupra r which will also trounce the mini.
I think the mini looks great although perhaps it should be called a maxi cos lets face it it isnt very small anymore-my 205 1.9 is a much smaller car. Well I hear there is a second incarnation on it's way with improvements but the mk2 civic type r is already out and it's even more fantastic than the 1st one(which recently beat an s2000 round a track) and the clio 182 is recieving rave reviews as well. Watch this space??

the mini cooper s will easily keep up if not surpass a civic type R, ive recently test drove the type R, mini cooper s, clio cup & leon cupra r.

the clio cup feels the best on the road out of the lot but the lack of features and comfort turned me off the car, the mini cooper s was a close second behind the cup but offered more creature comforts, then followed the civic type R & then the leon cupra R.

seems everyone compares top end BHP & 0-60 times but thats not the point, the civic is quick but drivability is not so good same as the leon, with the civic you need to thrash the engine around 4000rpm before the cam profile changes & the car starts to move & the 225bhp in the leon is nothing special, its a larger car than the mini so the power/weight ratio is only slightly better.

the civic is a normally aspirated engine that gives a turbo feel, and the leon is a turbo so they do feel faster in a straight line, but come to corners & the clio cup & mini feel much more solid & composed, and because there's no need to thrash the engine, exit speed from corners is alot better.

so after driving them all i chose to get a mini cooper s, and with the 220bhp conversion by BBR or hartge then the leon & type R are left behind.

I have to say- i think my favourite is the clio cup- for 13k it is brilliant and if you just spend 2k on it (the same as a standard mcs) you will have 220bhp no problems, but I have read a number of reviews and the Civic Type R always beat the rest around a track including an s2000!
Basically it comes down to you'r driving style.
I havent driven the Leon but know that 270+ bhp can easily be had with just a chip, exhaust and air filter, and I find it hard to believe that even a 220bhp mini would beat it.
Personally I will keep my 185 bhp 205 mi16= approx 203 bhp per tonne for now although I am tempted to do a little project with a Clio cup or get a 6 speed ibiza tdi up to 200brake and 300 pounds of torque.
.It's a shame they don't make cars like the 205 anymore, that are a real handful and take a really skillful drive. I drove a modern Impreza and it was so well set up that even at really fast speeds it just feels too easy to drive. a 220 bhp mcs will have about 176 bhp per tonne. I think this will cost a similar amount to a 250bhp Focus rs or even a standard Impreza.

Unfortunately there is one rather important factor that you seemed to have missed in your otherwise comprehensive review, which is insurance. I’m 23 and can just afford the £1,500 per year that my Cooper S costs me in insurance. I couldn’t afford to insure a Civic Type R, let alone an Evo or WRX, and I can’t modify the car either. From this standpoint the Cooper S is rather good value. For a young driver such as my self the Cooper S is one of the best cars in its (insurance) class. As for a MX5, my girlfriend has one, and you couldn’t pay me to own one...

To drive the same as the M3, surely it would need rear wheel drive? A minor point i thought...

Its only a 1.6 - a supercharger gives a much better torque spread than a Turbo in such a small engine. This allows you to feather the revs around corners throughout the range giving ample chance of good speed through the corner - getting the back end out is not the quickest way round a track.

For it to be as track ready as a civic type r, but with the same solid BMW feel, interior etc, the price would be ridiculous - the mini in both incarnations (and ive had both) is subscribing to about a certain style of car - and not everyone tracks them like you or i do.

The S has never been marketed like the Type r, RS etc, so why do people keep expecting it to outshine them?

(although my MCS JCW did stuff a civic type r the other day at the track :D ;) )

true, the mini has very different charecteristics to an m3, but regardless of the fact that it is not rwd or naturally aspirated it is still the closest to any other bmw to drive. Despite mx5's having a bit of a girlie image, they are still one of the most fun cars I have driven, the handling and gearchange are just superb.

Sounds like you guys would enjoy the good old MK1 MR2s. Even the standard NAs are great but check out the imported 1.6 supercharged models which can be tuned to 180-190 bhp, which from a rear wheel drive ~900kg car is awesome! The only down side is that there are two small boots instead of one not so small boot.
At a couple of thousand pounds for a mint example I think you'd agree there is no competition!

Certainly a very good car but Touring s14's are coming in cheap these days and is a far superior car to even the legendary MK1 MR2 S. MCS has a 6 speed box and still only 135 top end because the Supercharger is connected directly to the crank shaft, you lose in top end what you gain at bottom end. The MCS is compared to these cars because it is a hot hatch and is in the same price bracket, marketing doesn't even come into it IMO. And no not even a clio cup or MCS will out handle a CTR.

Not at all, it is a Nissan 200 S14 (S13 was around 86-93) the Touring model (98on) has "evil" headlights, leather interior and a few other goodies. It uses the legendary nissan Pulsar engine but in a detuned state and it is ridiculously easy to tune.

IMO a tuned Nissan 200 is a rocket ship, agreed, but not a pocket rocket like the cars discussed here. The combined boot space of a Mk1 Mr2 is not far off that of a prelude and I would guess an S14. But the handling or 'chuckability' factor would leave the little old MR2 near the top of the pile with the "touring car" Nissan at the bottom. As you can probably guess (by my possible bias) I own a classic MR2 and can even get a couple of seven foot surfboards on the roof rack! :)

Ok, so maybe it's because I'm a girl, but does anyone care that the Mini Cooper S is cute. I mean I know about cars a great deal and have test driven the alternatives, but honestly, the Mini was the car that made the most sense. Perhaps, it is bc I drive 50 miles a day, living in Atl, GA, but that car is sooooo darn cute and if you never have an opportunity to get the car over 20 mph due to traffic, then who cares about fast. Still, it is nice to have enough power to get out of the way of semis and crazy SUV drivers that feel they are the owners of the road. So, my next purchase will either be the Mini bc it's cute, or the Prius bc it's hybrid.

As an Automotive Engineer who previously worked at Lotus, I'm probably in a better position to qualify how the MINI handles relative to other cars available.

The finest front wheel drive car ever produced was the FWD Lotus Elan ('89-'95). The MCS is probably the closest direct rival to that car, in terms of entertainment, safety of road-holding, grip and pure chuckability.

To get a more responsive car, you would need to go to a mid engined vehicle, but you would then lose out in terms of... (read more)

You can make it your own with various extras and colour combinations, which is good for those who like to be individual. Apart from its few trips to the garage it hasnt been problematic at all. Putting reliability over performance? The car is faster than 90% of hatchbacks, but if you were looking for a performance car then you would have been better suited to buy a Porsche. Also, whilst I love my Mini Cooper S I know that they have some reliability problems (a factor which you are obviously not aware of). Spongy suspension? The Cooper S comes with sports plus suspension as standard, and if you get the Chilli pack it also comes with 17\" alloys with runflat tyres. These both give the car a stiff ride, and I have taken very tight corners at speed and am yet to feel any real body roll. If the car can be given so much acclaim and praise from organisations and motoring journalists all over the world, and yet you write such a review, then someone is wrong, and you are somewhat out numbered. All the same, I hope you are happier with your new car.

If you had a MINI-Cooper S, you just don\'t know what to expect from your car. I once talked to a guy with a SAAB 9-3 who told me it was a lousy winter car. I owned one at the time, and it came with 55 series performance tires (Michelin Pilots). He seemed to be under the impression that he could drive it in deep snow with those tires! Are you that kind of car owner (I hesitate to use the word driver)?

I\'m sure you you are only expressing your opinion about your own personal experiences. I\'m only curious about a few things that you have written ....

1. No torque, well I\'ve driven a lot of cars and having said that. Whatever made you think a car with 1600 CC and 8.5:1 compression was going to have any torque? The supercharger does add some bottom end but if you were expecting Rat motor style torque you were dreaming. These cars love to be spun, the tighter the better. I suppose you might have been disgruntalled driving a 69\' Z/28 as well they had about the same driving style requirement.

2. The soft handling? What is your daily driver a skateboard?. Admittedly
these cars are not for everyone and you must be one of the those people.
I hope the person you sold your mini to knows how to drive it and I hope you enjoy your Honda Accord.

I agree with you martin although the cooper S is not slow (relatively of course), Most mini owners love the look and have been deluded by the marketing which has convinced them it handles great, I\'m not saying its got bad handling but its handling has come from new developments in shock absorbers and tyres rather than from inherent good design. I recently took my Cooper S to a favourite windy bit of road and although it wasn\'t terrible I was expecting a lot more, my friend brought a 1983 Alfasud ti (105 bhp) which was standard e.g. no aftermarket suspension and had it had a few more horsepower (or god forbid a supercharger) it would have eaten the mini alive. I think people go to much into bodyroll, instead take note of what enter/exit speeds of a corner are and how the car accelerates as it turns out. I would expect very little bodyroll in a 2003 car with new stiff suspension.

Yes, that’s right Martin, I spent £18,000 on a car because Top Gear said so! In fact there was actually rather a lot of research that went into the car I chose to buy, and a lot of other people have come to the same conclusion. There are few if any other cars that generate the same cult following that the new Mini has, and this is not because of the say so of a car magazine such as Top Gear. It is quite clear from the other people that have commented on your review (and other reviews here) that your opinions are not shared by the general public. I still don’t understand what you were expecting to buy for the money, because in its class the Cooper S is at the head of the pack. If you have no further interest in this car (as appears so) then why not simply stop commenting on the subject and focus on giving great reviews on the car that you chose to replace your Mini with (which I’m sure we would be very interested in knowing). The fact that you think that everyone who has given positive reviews of the Cooper S works for BMW just goes to show the true depth of your ignorance.

Well get this, im not a part of BMW, infact I dislike much of there range, but the mini stands out as a great little car. The reason why its so appealing, isnt about 0-60 times, not its track times etc etc, but about FUN. I acually dont care how fast im going, so long as its fun. Take karting, its way slower than many cars, but boy is it fun. Handling may not be fit for a true race, but its a road car and has to be right in all situations. The steering is Direct and possitive, grip is well balanced and progressive. how you can say its spongy is beyond me (ooohhhh your used to driving steam engines maybe?)

"no torque under 3500" This is a small displacement high-rev engine, I guess if he drove and S2000 or acura nsx he would have the same complaint. It is a basic understanding of how to drive and how horsepower is developed and delivered that bugs me.

I\'d like to make a couple of comments on this review. I recently took ownership of a Mini Cooper S after driving a many number of cars in order to choose the one which was the most fun and practical to drive. The MCS handles extremly well. It has very little roll and the combination of torque, delivery and handling means although the rise is a little firm the car is quicker from point to point over anything this side of a 996 GT2/3. Although it could benefit from a little more bhp, the overall effectiveness of this car as a fun/ b-road car is excellent. As for BMW, I used to work for them and didn\'t particuarly like the company or cars, most of them not being what I\'d prefer to drive (with the exception of the E36 M3) but against those feelings I still purchased an MCS. It\'s a great buy and a fantastic car. While I respect your opinions I would disagree with your original review.

Let\'s talk about real world experience. What are you basing your claims on? My experience on twisty river roads, traffic circles, and the one timed slalom were spectacular.

Hmm, just checked the MINI official website to see where it harps on about it being a 'true drivers car'. Couldnt find it. what it does go on about for the whole range is how the design makes it easy to drive in a more fun way ie quicker. In this respect it does EXACTLY what it says on the tin. Not everyone wants the back end out like Tiff Needel. Most want a predictable car that "feels" fast. Ive driven all sorts including some alfas and some of them were great drives. But none felt as surefooted as my S Works. And as for torque it has been said before, Minis old and new were meant to be revved.

I think the mini is a fantastic car and I haven\'t driven it but against the competition I think it would have to be a clio cup or CTR. Having driven the CTR I find it hard to believe that a mini is more fun or can keep up with this car on any road it really is good. Being a 205 1.9 driver with some subtle mods I doubt the mini is as entertaining to drive or is more of a handful, probably because it is some 15 years more modern and weighs around 300-350kgs more which is a hell of a lot. I have also driven a Fiat Uno turbo 160bhp in a 900kg car and it was a riot! But the MCS works addition looks very addition if you can afford it- it\'s entering Focus RS territory with the price. Anyone driven these cars??

I have a Mini Cooper S Works and I sold my Lotus Elise (series 2) for it.

The Mini outhandles, out-guns and out shines the Lotus on the public roads. On the track though, the Lotus would be faster!

My car has a few mods - lowered springs, induction, manifold, sports cat - Recent dyno saw it at just a touch over 220bhp.

...and I didn't buy it because of the "hype". I bought it as I'm interested in good handling, fun cars!

Sounds cool!, I love the look of the mini even if it is a bit chunky and heavy, but for the price of a 220 bhp works I just think that the rivals might out gun it.
For 19k you can easily get a 275 bhp Leon Cupra R or
16k the new Civic which will do 0-60 in 6.6 and you have all that money left over to sup it up and even the MK1 beat an S2000!
Or for 15k you can get a Clio Cup up to the same power, and it weighs about over 250kgs less so will be faster and cheaper.
Or you can probaly get a 250+bhp focus rs for 21k.
I really like the MCS but there are too many people that drive it cos they think they are trendy but it just makes it less exclusive.

I have had my MINI Cooper S for just over 12 months and have been absolutely delighted with it. Whilst it would definitely benefit from another 40 bhp, the car manages to be amazingly civilised when driven gently and a total hoot when pedal pressed to metal. My friends new Honda Civic Type R is faster but far noisier and less relaxing to drive and, of course, lacks that MINI class, history, race pedigree and sense of style. How many cars can truly upstage all of the actors in a film including the oscar-winning Charlize Theron? I raced a Cooper S (unmodified) around Croft race circuit last Summer and it was amazing: totally forgiving of any mid-corner excess, bucket loads of grip and plenty of grins from ear-to-ear. Did I mention the residuals? I'm sure Martin O'Neill got a very nice trade-in price for his MINI which will have surely given him something to smile about as he waved it good bye!

It can safely overtake just about anything on a country road and in another 2 years when I swap it in I expect ill get a really good trade in on it. I didn't buy the car because I wanted a santa pod dragster I bought it because it was nippy, fairly priced, and 3 years of trouble free motoring and so far its not let me down once. This car is everything it claims to be and more.

Hello...
Well, I'm not a drag racer nor an expert on off-road type racing. I have owned Firebirds, Trans Ams, Miata's, Thunderbirds, Cadilliac's... all over the "range" of vehicles. The funnist car I've driven is the Miata. Once person said, "It goes where you point it"... which has proved true. I test road (multiple times.. almost to the irritation of the dealer!) the Mini S. I gotta admit, it's a unique car... and in great contract to my current F250 supercab diesel superduty! (grin). I'm a car person. What I did find in my driving the Mini S is that it is fun, but a bit uncomfortable on the seating... where the seating is a bit "trandelenberb" (pointed down towards the gluteous maximus) unless you crank it up a bit in height. The test vehicle I drove (over and over) had many rattles, and the last time I drove it the car pulled heavily to the right... something that the dealer also seemed surprised to find. I had just driven it 2 days prior. I first noted a bit of a rattle in the passenger door at the window, and the last time out, there seemed to be many rattles when going over a semi-bumpy road. I've also been test driving the Imprenza... spelling? It's the Subaru WRX.. with 227 HP and all wheel drive. It's about 27k compared to the 32k cooper S (they are marking up the vehicles here in the San Diego area). I've also tested the WRX STI... which has 300 HP and drives like a rocket.. and corners like my mother-in-law avoiding a family gathering (just kidding). Anyway, like I said, I'm a "car" person, and not a specialist. By trade, I'm an RN in the ER and ICU... but by night (and sometimes day)... I love to drive.. drive drive drive. With all I've heard about the mechanical tid bits that tend to eventually go wrong with the Mini's paint and other oddities, I wonder whether I'll be using that 4 year 50,000k warrenty a lot. Just my two cents. I saw a Toyota MR2 in the showroom the other day.. I'll be giving that a ride. It was only 26k on the sticker.. no mark up. Take care... John

I have currently just switched from a V8 5.7L 230kW Commodore to a Cooper S Works. They both spec the same 0-100 figure so I TOTALLY disagree that the Mini is slow.

I have only owned mine for 3 days yet the driving techniques used to get a Mini off the mark compared to a V8 are obviously very different. The V8 has a huge amount of torque and so putting the foot to the floor the thing responds in almost any gear. That said using a good amount of revs and getting the correct gear and the Mini goes like the clappers and handles like it's on rails (something a rear wheel drive V8 just CANNOT do!).

I just can't seem to work out what car Martin was driving....

I haven't bought a Mini S yet, but I will as soon as I sell my Harley. After test driving one, it would have taken an undertaker to wipe the smile off of my face. Unlike my bike, I wouldn't get wet, cold, or hot while still being able to carry someone else plus luggage. Being a senior citizen and having sold and driven many cars, it was the most fun I've ever had behind a steering wheel. A 911 it isn't, but for me, it's the next best thing that is affordable. It's just putting fun back into getting from here to there and grinning the whole time.

I have spoken to many Cooper S owners now that have also found the driving experience a let down. For example, compared with other (cheaper) FWD hatches it lags behind vehicles like the Integra Type R and even the Clio Cup.

As such, for a car billed as a drivers car it is below average for the money.

I can understand so many people rising to defend the car - if I had just bought one and did not have much experience of other "hot" FWD cars I would do the same.

I think Martin wants a car that really feels fast to satisfy his boy racer urges.

For me, having just stepped out of my MINI Cooper S, the best thing is that the car just drives effortlessly and doesn't feel particularly fast as you are going along. There is no drama, no tyre squealing, no high revving hysterics, just a good drive in a car that feels in the millionaire class - Madonna seems pretty happy with hers. Around a race track, I am sure that the MINI Cooper GP works, with no rear seats it is very much the business, but driving (fairly) legally on normal roads, in a safe yet fun fashion, the Cooper S is ideal.

My only mistake was allowing my wife to drive it: I barely get a look in now, and I am relegated to driving the family MPV!

It’s been almost three years since I bought my Cooper S, and I’m still extremely happy with it. I’m having as much fun now with the car as when I bought it, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a car of this kind. There has been a lot of banter on this review, either side of the fence, but the fact that the overwhelming majority of this has been on the positive side, just goes to prove that it is a great little car. And that’s just it; it’s a little car. People that are expecting a pure bred sports car are going to be disappointed, because it’s only a small hatchback. The fact is that it is a fun little car with more than enough voom for most, and it is well styled and hangs on to its value better than pretty much any car on sale in the UK today. If you would not consider buying one because of the foolish and unfounded negative statements that have been made on this page, then more fool you.

The Mini Cooper S is a sweet ride, supercharged which is very cool, has the capability to produce 200+ bhp, small with lots of power = very quick which is very sweet, aint too keep on the kit or one of the kits anyway. Nice set of big rims twin centre exit exhaust n roarin engine is all you need. A turbo would make the car so so much sweeter. (read more)

A turbo-charger and a super-charger? Whoa! Is that even possible... I would recommend those of you with a need for more power to just have the John Cooper Works conversion, or perhaps the Hartge or Digitech conversion (although they will invalidate the warranty)

If you go for the works kit your warranty is still available however any other kit and the warranty then becomes void. You can't have a turbo and a supercharger in the same car, The supercharger however is the one i'd go for as you get no lag like a turbo and power increases can be huge.

The Civic Type R is a far better car as it is a far cleverer shape and is actually worth what you pay for it. It has the following advantages over a puny Cooper S -
1. More Powerful, thrilling experience taking it into VTEC Zone!
2.Practicality, easily fit two 6ft+ adults in back. Also it actually has what i call a boot!
3.Better build quality, even though mini's is still good.
4.A Mini would not beable to keep up with it in any situation, especially on a track.

In my opinion, when you buy a Mini Cooper S you are paying for the badge, BMW. Thats all, it should be at least £3000 cheaper than it is as it is so small and does not offer the practicality and Thrills as its competiton, e.g - The very good Clio 182 Cup which is about Two grand cheaper and also quicker.

Also i think it is insane if anyone was to buy a Cooper S Works as that is totally over priced.
Its ridiculus.
Cooper S also do not feel as special as a Type R as you see them absolutly anywhere you look now.

VTECPower200, hmm, I wonder what car you own... Suprisingly enough I agree with a fair bit of what you say. If you are out for a faster car then the Type R would be the one to get. My issue is that to get to the magical VTEC zone you have to go over 6,000 rpm, which is not very practical or economical for in-town/daily driving. Also, the steering gives little to no feed back and is far too light. Plus, your right, it is about the badge, and for some crazy reason I would rather drive a mini BMW than a chaved up Honda...

Fair point but have you ever driven a Civic Type R, if you have you will know that when you use the VTEC you are really supposed to floor the accelerator, and in no time at all you are up to the 6,000 rpm mark, I agree, the power delivery is not all that practical in areas like going around town, but find a carriageway and you will see why people talk so highly of it.
Oh and you pick at me about buying a Honda, well have you read about the VTEC engine, has there been a failure with one? No is the answer.
I agree BMW is a very very good make, Honda may not be a prestige make like BMW, but they are certainly a very good make, and there reliability record shows that!!!!
Is your Cooper S the standard 163BHP Supercharged version or have you had yours upgraded with the "John Cooper Works" package that takes it up to around 200BHP?
Oh and for the comment "chaved up Honda" Try going on the Civic Type R reviews and writing that about it!

I think this is getting a little out of hand. Let me add my two pence worth.

First off the Cooper S is nothing more than a fancy and rather tarty small BMW. And there's nothing wrong with that. There is obviously a big market for it however.

Agreeing with my fellow Civic owner, the civic is far more of a serious sports car. Additionally, I don't think that the civic is any less sophisticated than the Cooper however. In fact I have been to some pretty posh weddings and the Silver Civic has commanded respect when parked next to the usual rich boys toys - 330ci, mercs etc etc. If I had a bright blue Cooper S there instead it just wouldn't have looked right - it's just too small and looks like a (nice) toy car.

The civic is also far easier to live with (for example Ikea billy bookcases are no problem, nor are 5 tall adults), the Cooper is much smaller. For people like me who only have the one car and do need to occasionally carry stuff around the small space in the Cooper would be a definate problem.

A good friend has driven my type r and compared it to his brother's Cooper S. I will get him to comment.

Going from an MX-5 to the new Cooper S, I was amazed by the handeling capabilites and stop-start responsiveness. I loved the car from 30 minutes in my test drive, and within a day of taking delivery, I was able to take cornering ability of the S to it's limit (not that I am that good at driving, but the car is so easy to drive, and forgiving). I am flabbergastted by the 18 slams on Mr. Oneill.

I drove the S the first week they were introduced into the Washington, DC area for a weekend. Having admired the original Mini so much and having driven my friend\'s 60\'s version in the early 70\'s, I had high expectations for the car. Also, I have driven almost every iteration M3 and have found them truly exceptional cars. Truly 4 seat serious sports cars.

Maybe I expected greatness (for its cost) due to it\'s predecessor\'s legendary legacy and I was truly pulling for it.

Pull it did not. The gearing from 1st to 2nd gear was horrendous, just as Mr. Oneill stated. I was tremendously underwhelmed almost to the point of pain, by this major technical SNAFU. But it could not have been a mistake. The only answer is that the people with the last word on the final design must have engineered this into the car to turn off most serious drivers.

I have one of the very first MX5s built, (called \"Miata\" here in the USA) made in 1989. A no frills, no power steering, no radio, base model 1.6 liter, but with a turbo, intercooler, Borla Turbo matched exhaust(Bell Engineering USA) with real life 190 BHP and 200 Ft/lb torque specs., installed in 1994. Also alloy wheels, z rated tire (tyres) and a serious suspension upgrade.

The standard suspension even 15 years ago was easily better then that of the Cooper S\' at just between 1/2 to 2/3 the price adjusting for currency changes in time. Of course one is a true sports car, the other a sporty car. But with the serious tecnological advances in all the years, why doesn\'t the Mini handle better? Why as was already stated by another person, wasn\'t a turbo used instead? It seems that mainly the British and Americans use superchargers. Turbos are much more powerful and sophisticated by design, have virtually no lag now and generate no parasitic loss.

I found the Mini Cooper S sloppy at high speeds in the corners and there was no allowance to steer by throttle, hampered by the lack of the anemics supercharger\'s ability to add any real assistance(why even bother with the supercharger?).

I was a high performance bike rider for 17 years without owning one car in all those years. But I did work in the automotive field for 15 years and have driven virtually every sports/near race car including evirtually every iteration of the original (and new at the time) American muscle cars sold in the US since a teenager working for a huge performance garage starting in the late 60s.

It is amazing how important useable power is when steering by throttle out of a corner. Is this a lost art and therefore not engineered into or understood by younger drivers? Also, there are so many intangibles and racing techniques that a Fangio or Shelby and so many other more experienced drivers would (have)understand intuitively that make a car mediocre to great. The Cooper S could have been a great car at the same cost. It is not the car it should have been and falls far short of a real world connectedness to driver and road that a truly enjoyable enthusiasts car should have. It does not have much soul. This is not to say that it is not a very nice car but it scrifices practicallity and rides too far on it\'s unrealized hype. A car this size, at this cost and with this legacy should have been far, far better.

I'm wondering however... can't you just downshift and apply the gas in the mini as well? I've done this on many test drives of the Mini S. It seemed to work, although I must admit that the WRX (Subaru) I'm also test driving pulls out without downshifting.

The MINI Cooper S truly stands out from the rest by having a genuine sense of style and individuality, that is equally at home on the racetrack or B-road.

I dissagree wholeheartedly, the Mini S is a marvel of Technology and Simplicity at once, blended into the most fun a fellow could have on four wheels.. simply an amazing automobile, and by the way, I could overtake a Fiat uno on a bicycle...maybe a driving lesson is in order here?

i cant take this review seriously!!! The mini S is definatly a fast car that handles marvelously!!

The only bad points that i saw in the S was the quality of materials used and the reliability issues in some parts of the world.

RSCOSSIEBOY can't surely have driven one of these great cars! They take some 'running-in' to get the best out of them, but I've driven a number of examples and all have been quick and extremely well built. What other car on the road attracts the same number of admiring glances? Not the poorly styled and cheap-as-chips interior of any RS I can think of! Sure, it may not keep up with a Focus RS (??), but why would you want a 'peaky' car with a blue oval, when you can have the style, engineering nous, bullet-proof residuals and the point-to-point chuckability of a Cooper S, and save a few ££££s too!?

This guy is crazy i have an S and i've ran against ( Nissan's Type R, Mitsus Evoc and Eclipes GSX, Honda 2000, and even a Ford Lightning) believe me the S kick ass. This guy probably does not know how to drive a German engineered auto mobile, he should stick to Japanes cars.

I know that everyone is entitled to an oppinion but when you write a review like this just to undermine a car it should be deleted.

From your comments I feel that you are jealous, and as for being undertook, DONT THINK SO !
more likely this review is spawned from the embarrasment of your RS Boys Toy being OVER TOOK ! by a Mini Cooper S me thinks !

I have owned Porche's, BMW's, Mercedes etc etc and now have a Mini Cooper S and I love it.

The only other car that I have owned that was as much fun was a Porche SC Sport.

If you feel that poorly about the MINI cooper S then you should\'ve kept your money. Just read the black and white and listen to the true motoring fanatics and you\'ll see it\'s all there. The MINI cooper S is an exceptional vehicle and a real joy to motor in.

I agree the guy is a jerk. However, I take offense to the Northerner comment. 1st I am originally from NY, but now live in Texas, where these idiots should all be locked up and forced to take driving tests. 2nd, aren't England + Germany North, where some of the best handling/performance cars are made.

He surely must have never owned one. In first gear as soon as the supercharger kicks in this car becomes a mini rocketship. The build is also excellenet and solid. Great handling and of course you can build it as you want it. Some are going to be better than others. But slow?? I don't think so.
