Read some of the negative comments in the overall review. Some intersting points raised. If your going to drive this car at 45 miles per gallon then you should make sure that the bonet os securely closed.
Lets get back to "Construction and Use" theory. This can was built for a purpose. ie., To run around town and pick up some shopping . Ease of Parking and economical in urban situations.
Its not a a racing car, nor is it a load lugger. Given resonable driving and useage they will last 10... (read more)

I own a Honda Prelude 2.2 200bhp V-tec BB4. I love Hondas due to their incredible reliability and V-tec engines...however, due to running costs and a £660 service due, I have bought myself a 'runabout' until I buy a big car later next year. I flew from Edinburgh to Gatwick then hopped on a train for another 30 miles to reach my destination where a certain little car awaited in a shed - my new rover Metro 1.1s in red with colour coded air intakes and red seatbelts! It took me 9 hours to drive... (read more)

I ' ve been promised a rover metro 1.1s limited edition and cant wait for it to be mine, fantastic looking for a first car and only a limited number so I ' m pretty chuffed. The racing lights on the front look great and the Heinz 57 vinyl ' s and the custom number plates are good too. It seems like the car is light and with a 1.1s engine seems it will be quite nippy, I can ' t wait to get out there and go driving with them, and is it me but the radio seems really loud. I was given my Rover Metro as a present for my birthday, so far I've put alloy wheels on it, tinted the windows, fancy seat covers, rear speakers in the parcel shelf, new stereo, and this week have just changed from a 1.1 engine to a 1.1 sport engine, after a few teething problems I'm really enjoying it. I brought a 1.1 Rover Metro Rio to run around in after my proper car was hit by a dustbin lorry, and I personally think this is the worst car i have ever owned, and i would advise anyone not to buy one not only cos they are an awful car, to drive even after regassing the suspension, but also have you seen what these things look like after a 10 - 15 mph impact. You'd be safer driving a crisp packet! I'm going back to VW GOLF's, they may be a bit slow but a least they are safe and do about... (read more)

Great little car, I had 40 mph in first 55 mph in second a 0-60 of 12 seconds and it handles like its on rails and you can feel the car when its on its border line, so you have lots of warning if the back end is going to swing out, good fuel consumption of about 45-50 mpg when not being thrashed. My Rover Metro 1.1S is my first car and what a car it is! It's a 1993 1.1 3 door and it doesn't half shift. OK, it has a K&N on it and a very large backbox but that's not the point. I bought it for 300 pounds, done a little TLC and my locals are astonished with what it looks like, it doesn't even look like a Metro anymore.

I have debadged it, smoothed the boot out, blacked the windows, colour coded, and stuck some sexy seat covers in it. I get so many questions on what it is. I've had... (read more)

I bought the Rover Metro 1.1 Gta version, on 68 k on an M plate for £500 and I was so surprised with the little whippet, excellent throttle response, get down a hill and you can stick with the Vtr's ect...good interior layout, elec windows, remote central locking. It's standard spec is better than Fiesta's and 106's. The handling is good, but the back end can bounce a bit. I've had 120 at 5,500 rpm but it revs to 6,500. So with a big enough hill it may get off the clock. It's a winner. (read more)

Wow! What car! Me and my Rover Metro 1.1S (I've christened her B1) have had some adventures. She came to me on a '92 K plate. She's done about 60k. She's ultra-reliable and goes like stink owing to a series of mods, that latest of which was a custom built Powerflow exhaust costing almost £300! Well worth it though. Be careful you don't mix the Rover Metro with the Austin Metro which was a rather unreliable car, it surprised me reading this review and can only think that the car was not l carefully maintained from new, or it had done unbelievable milage, the Rover Metro I had owned was a superb car and brilliant first car for the kids which is where mine went. This review writer has also said all Rover are rubbish which is nonsense because I have owned numerous Rovers and all of them have been wonderfull to me.

Elmarie's Response to Alastair.'s Review

Written on: 01/12/2003

To expand on my earlier comments as they were rather short and have given the wrong impression -

Actually, the car had a full service history, 12,000 miles on the clock and was a Rover approved used vehicle with 1 previous owner.

The gearbox went at roughly 24k followed by cylinder head at roughly 40k. Cylinder head went through imperfections in the mating service and cylinder head failures are common on these K series engines. Although you would not believe it from the trouble I have had, I am actually a very mechanically sensitive driver/owner.

Recently the car has suffered premature corrosion and numerous electrical failures all at a total mileage of 52k and 6 years old.

I describe Rover cars as rubbish from personal experience. If the above was not a good enough example, I continue. My wife's then brand new 1999 Mini Cooper (original style) suffered electrical problems, needed a new fuel injection system 3 months from new, had water leaks from new and then started rusting at 3 years old - and that is what I can recall off the top of my head before we got well rid of it.

By contrast I own a 15 year old Honda Grand Prix replica motorcycle that still looks and runs as well as the day it was built and our Honda Civic has never given so much as a moment's trouble. It is worth pointing out that the motorcycle runs a highly stressed 2 stroke engine which by its very nature should by rights be problematic. That it is not is testament to the build quality of a Honda product as well as the carefull owenrship it has received.

I should also add that the service received from various Rover dealers has, like their products, been decidedly third world and damned expensive. £200 for a normal service compared to just over £100 for a Honda. Rip off if you ask me.

I own a H reg Rover Metro with 61000 miles on it and have never had a problem with it. I am the second owner from new and have owned other Jap cars and my little Metro fits the bill on performance and handling. I also own a Rover 216 sli auto and a VW Beetle and a Isuzu Trooper both on the Y plate and still prefer the Metro around town with its liverly willing engine and ease of parking and how dare any one knock its reliabillity. If you look after it it will look after you. To some up a great little car inexspensive to run and insure for the young driver. I hope the new city wise Metro replacement meets this standard as I will be having one as soon as they bring out an auto but will be sorry to see my Metro go.

Rover metros, being at the lower end of the price range in the second hand price market are the obvious choice for first cars. Students who own metros soon get the modification bug after a few months of metro madness. This in turn leads to more and more moded metros on the street and the popularity is bound to increase. The same effect is happening to the metro as has happened to clio's and corsa's and the famous nova! Except, people get more satisfaction out of doing up a metro because of... (read more)

Man - its a 1.1 k-series lump of junk. Its not powerful for a "1.1" they are prone to overheating and they have zero street credibity. What do you eat each day to convince yourself your £250 wreck is actually a nice car??? I had the ( dare I say ) honour of driving one. Yes - it was a car, and yes it gets you from a to b.....but No, its not fast, no, its not nice looking, and no, the wheel arches are not there anymore...someone took a huge bite out them! The Metro is no cheaper than any simular car of the same age, yes the Metro does suffer from rust but no more so than fiesta's and Nova's of the same age. The rear archs are all pron on all 3 of the above to rusting if mud is aloud to build up behind them. For a 1.1 the K-series is one of the best around and is completly alloy and is very light with 60bhp from a 1.1 which is rather powerful for a standard 1.1

As for the 1.1, they are the best 1.1's i have seen. The guy who responded above somewhere obviously had a metro that hadnt been looked after. All my metros work perfectly. I agree some arch work is needed at some point, but its not expensive, and you can do it yourself.

I just purchased a 1.1s for my girlfriend who has just passed her test. Drives really well and you can hardly hear the engine when doing 70. Paid £400 with only 6100 on the clock come on thats not bad for a 12 year old car with full service history and 5 months mot and tax. Several people have had a drive in it and think its a smashing runner. But if you have just passed and are only used to modern cars that you have had your lessons in then you may need some practice with the clutch and accelarator, which my girlfriend is over now so the fella above who does not like the car and says it has no speed obviously can't drive aswell as a woman.

Written on: 09/05/2004

Hi there I have just brought my Rover Metro 1.1s, it is quick and goes 100mph on a flat road. Im looking at buying the RS rally kit for my Metro, it makes the car a lot wider but it looks good. I have spent £1000 on ice and the body kits going to cost me £800 (£200 to get it fitted) and I am puting a 1.9 honda in it then it will go like a rocket. If anyone has any ideas or wants to know where I get my suff for my Metro let me know on carl_the_man_49@hotmail.com

Hey,
I got a Metro 1.1s for my first car too!
Despite what people say, its pretty nippy in the first 3 gears, but getting to high speeds is a challenge.

I got it going quite fast down hill but I was scared of blowing the engine so I slowed down, but otherwise its a great reliable car that loves to be ragged around! 33.3mpg isn't too bad either, about average.

If anyone has any ideas on how to improve the look, ie tyres etc, please let me know as I don't have a clue.

Cheers, Lee.

The Rover Metro 1.1s is a good car, low suspension due to hydragas with the rover alloys (5 spoke) it looks good. rover 100 ascot is basic but it drives well. Look after the wheel arch because they can easily rust! Performance isn't really boy racer standard unless you own the gta version else you are better getting a nova sr for less money, but i feel still it's a good car. (read more)

Good review, my METRO 1.1L is a good reliable car and it's nifty of the mark, when compared to Micra's and pug 106's.

Excellent first small car. Good value at the moment. I would not call this car a Boy racer car because they don't like metro's which is good. (read more)

what Martin is saying is very true, good man martin. Very right in saying about the wheel arches rusting off, but the vehicles handling and reliability is second to none.

Despite its low engine capability the metro is a nippy little car, being front wheel drive it has a chronic wheel spin ability, I have carried on spinning in second gear on occasions, everyone is all to keen to dis the Metro but it serves an excellent purpose and has low insurance, what more do you need. “The Rover Metro 1.1s itself drives very well...”

Written on: 27/09/2002 by Jas.

The Rover Metro 1.1s itself drives very well considering it is on such small tyres, but the steering is very light and pointy. It has plenty of poke in a straight line, top speed for a 1100 G reg was 98mph, and it goes just as well through corners; though you have to be somewhat tentative on the throttle pedal! The negative stereotyping of the Metro K series is by people who can afford better or hold a low opinion on 'cheap' cars. (read more)

I have a Renault Clio 1.4rt which is a relativly cheap car, my sister has a k-series metro 1.1. The metro admitedly is quite nippy although it doesnt compare to my clio. I agree that it may be underated, but no one realy cares about slow cars. On here they're so overated its unbelievable. One person said they got 120mph! But it seems most people on here just want to believe that they are faster than they are. They may be good for what they are, but at the end of the day they're just old womens cars to get from a to b in.
