Good Points: Comprehensively researched. A well-written and gripping docudrama.
Bad Points: Difficult to take seriously as a biography on account of the author's prejudical language (when Amundsen has to turn back due to the extreme cold it is sensible while under similar circumstances, Scott "turns tail").
General comments: Roland Huntford, Paul Theroux, Scott and Amundsen: Last Place on Earth - This book is a must-read for those interested in polar exploration. The vast amount of factual information contained within it is embellished by conjecture and opinion to make a sensational yarn.
I read Ranulph Fiennes' book on Scott first having taken the Roland Huntford view as accepted wisdom without having actually read him. Having felt obliged to do so, I found that Roland Huntford's view is at one extreme and nowhere near as authorititave as has been portrayed, needing to be balanced by further reading.
