I purchased this vacuum cleaner nearly 12 years ago when it went on sale at Comet. I have th Brush control model. It is a very useful feature, as it spares the hard floors from being scratched, and you can disable the brushes when vacuuming the car so they don't get ruined. This vacuum has never had anything wrong with it and at £350 new, that means I have paid about £31/year for an amazing vacuum! It also comes with 3 tools that do pretty much anything - it would be pointless to purchase... (read more)

Very good and reliable - I've had my Dyson DC04 Absolute for over 9 years and still going strong. Servicing and parts are reasonable price and to be honest a new motor was supplied and fitted for less than £50 - that makes it effectively a new machine for £50?
I hear and understand the issue of tools coming off but its no big deal. As for the "can't do stairs" and "hose ends in a long tube with a handle".... you muppets!! For the stairs you remove the long tube altogether and the hose... (read more)

I have had my DYSON DC04 for 9 years and have only ever replaced the hose at a cost of £15 ...that to me is good value for money! I have a dog and some laminate floors and it works a treat on all of them! On the downside I do find it slightly heavy to get up and down the stairs but I manage slowly and carefully. I have used the hoover every day for 9 years so all in all a very good buy for me. Its just starting to cut out on me but thinks that is a fault on the cable as I have took to... (read more)

I love British products, and I loved my old Dyson that I could drag around the floor but eventually the motor died. So I bought the DC04 upright to replace it. However, the tools fall off, the belts break every time you accidentally suck up a string... You cannot easily replace belts without replacing the whole clutch mechanism. They cost £20-£30 every time (and prepare to scuff your knuckles). Frankly I am disappointed that such lack of thought has gone into a something supposedly... (read more)

I am the very distressed owner of an upright DC4 (I think) Dyson - I've had it for years now and I absoultely bloody HATE it!!! It's such a heavy cumbersome awful stupid thing to use. It gets me so stressed I've had to hire a cleaner to use it, but on occasion (like just now as you may have guessed!) Owned purple/Silver Dyson DC04 til it died (7 years) Overpriced hype. The tools break. Can't used nozzle to get into small places as the handle gets in the way.

Fell for the hype and spent 4 times as much as needed on a Dyson DC04 vacuum that is terrible to use. The man who got such accolade for designing this obviously lived in a large open plan house. The attachments fall off at the slightest knock and are precariously balanced on the part that you have to take to the bin. The hose ends with a long straight fixed pipe and a large looped handle which makes it impossible to vacuum small gaps, furniture, behind furniture, or stair treads. The... (read more)

I got my Dyson DC04 from a friend 3 years ago (ie; second hand) and it still works like a dream, or it did till my mum dropped it down the stairs and broke the handle! (it does still work though) I have 2 dogs so as you can imagine it gets a workout at least twice daily. Thus Dyson DC04 comes highly recommend! When you empty the plastic drum, just press the button. All the dust just drop out on the other end, great design! I had it for 3 years, never had a problem. I use it for vacuuming all wood chips, & fine dust, no problem at all.

We were given the Dyson DC04 vacuum cleaner as a present. The person buying it thought they were buying good quality, as it was a lot more expensive than most (in fact they bought one for themselves, and for someone else at the same time). It turned out not to be the case. In 26 years we have had 4 vacuum cleaners - this is not anywhere close to the others. In the five years that I have had this Dyson I have replaced the following parts - the wand, the hose, the clutch, the soleplate, the motor, the filter above the motor (which went black after the motor failed), the beater bar, the hose again, the motor again, the seal on the bit inside the plastic bin, the knob on top of the power switch (which admittedly I broke after trying to dismantle it) and...I think that's it.

While the suction technology of this Dyson DC04 is basically sound, it has very little else going for it. The build quality is dreadful - it seems to be made of cheap plastic, so bits constantly fall off. Poor design and ill thought out practicalities cause constant breakages. The hose splits after no time at all. Belts break with alarming regularity and fitting a new one really needs two people. Then you have to re-fit the sole-plate...

Initially, I was very impressed with the Dyson DC04 vacuum cleaner because of it's power. The joy was short-lived as parts started to fail. Initially it was just some of the catches wearing down and becoming loose. Then the hose failed and had to be replaced. Then the clutch. Suction steadily decreased, and now the hoover just overheats and cuts out.

From the start this overpriced Dyson DC04 machine only worked infrequently. Common problem is the too easily blocked pipes. Unfortunately even clearing them does not stop it overheating/cutting out every few minutes. Lost count of the number of broken belts.
Even though under guarantee Dyson just make inadequate noises like 'you must clear the pipes' and will not respond when told they are clear. This company had a good reputation once. Don't go near them now. (read more)

What a fantastic hoover, it really makes me sick to see people slate the Dyson, especially the DC04. Its powerful, it doesn't loose suction, it's reliable. What else do people want from a vacuum? If you are using a hoover 5 times a day 7 days a week then there's no hoover on the planet that will withstand that over a long period of time, they aren't invincible, but the DC04 certainly does the job that Dyson have said it does. Dyson DC04 - If you are thinking about buying a state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner, consider all options bar this one.
Between my family we have had three of these. All of them have had motor burn outs within 2 years and they are only moderately used. You've only to read other reviews to see that this is a very common fault. Tell Dyson about this and they act all surprised like it never happens to anyone else.

Thought when the Dyson DC04 was designed, it was meant to last longer than 3 years, but how worng i was, seems like it was desinged to break after 2 years, when warranty has ran out. I read with interest the review of Andrew Marcot. Our experience with the Dyson DC04 is almost identical to his, right down to the use of Duct Tape to hold various parts together (it's lucky they make it in grey!)

I wish I had known that the motor problem seems to be a common fault with these vacuum cleaners. You cannot just change the brushes on these either, you have to change the whole motor, at a cost of £50.00. This would prove to be quite expensive if this happens every 2-3 years. I do regret my purchase of a Dyson DC04. It is noisy and hard to use. It makes a variety of funny noises. I personally find them annoying. I like the fact that the Dyson DC04 picks up a lot of dust and dirt. The claim that it picks up the highest amount of dust seems to be true. After my third dyson (aren't vacuums supposed to last more than a year or two?) I have finally came to the conclusion that they are a total rip off , don't believe the hype. Cheap plastic parts that break very easily, tools that are wierdly designed at strange angles unless you're four feet tall! I have had the Dyson DC04 vacuum cleaner for a year and a half...it is simply the most disappointing electrical appliance I have purchased...a dustpan and brush is more effective and far less temperamental.
