“Absolutely appalling experience”

★☆☆☆☆

written by fayloosley on 16/09/2023

Absolutely appalling experience. I sent my phone in, in perfect condition, only for O2 Recycle to tell me that the screen is cracked and sent me a photo of it. They're now claiming that it wasn't them and their 'T&Cs' protect them, meaning the blame has been put back on me as the customer (for not taking a photo of my phone before I sent it - where was the advice on doing that in the first place O2?) and I lose out on the money they quoted me for the phone. Not only that but I requested for it to be sent back to me 2 weeks ago and it still hasn't arrived. So not only have O2 damaged my phone, they have now likely lost it too. I have complained to O2 Recycle who have fobbed me off with terrible excuses and I have also complained to the official O2 complaints department who have just ignored me. I have been a loyal customer of O2 for almost 2 decades and I cannot believe how I've been treated. Is someone going to respond to me now that I'm sharing my review??

“Easy service”

★★★★★

written by GabrielThorpe257 on 17/07/2022

Very easy to recycle my phone, sent it off packaged securely. I took photos and videos of my device before I sent it, but it turns out I didn't have to. I got a response when they received it that they will be paying me in 5 working days. I received my money in my bank account in 3 days. Didn't have any problems whatsoever. Very happy and such an easy service to use! Thank you!

“I sent in my Galaxy s11 as part of the upgrade package...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Koen29 on 22/04/2022

I sent in my Galaxy s11 as part of the upgrade package being offered by O2 through which I was offered an additional £250 on top of the base value. The phone was in perfect condition when I sent it. I left on my protective case (which was damaged) to protect it in the post. The phone itself was not damaged and worked perfectly having been received only 10 months previously as a replacement for a faulty phone. The first email from them stated the phone was damaged and detailed the damage to the external protective case and offering a quarter of the value originally given. I complained stating that the phone was not damaged the external case was. Next I get a message saying oh well even if it isn't the sim card tray is not the original sim card tray. It absolutely was when I sent it in. Clearly they had removed the SIM car and not bothered putting back the correct SIM tray. They said the photos I took did now cover the SIM tray so did not prove the original SIM car tray was in. They sent the phone back with a SIM tray a completely different colour to the phone!!! Like I would not have noticed that!! Use the service at your own risk.

“Payment on the Full Offer”

★★★★★

written by angg26 on 31/03/2020

I have used O2 Recycle many times and I have always received the full amount offered, promptly within a couple of days of returning my phones and I would have no hesitation in recommending O2 to friends or family. This time during COVID19 did take longer for the payment, but under the circumstances the payment delay of less than a week was understandable.

I have returned my phone 2 weeks ago and I have not yet received the money. In addition, I could sell it to a much a much higher price on ebay from the price they got it (even with the +£100 that were coming from my deal). I regretted giving it for recycle.

written by on 19/03/2020

The O2 representative was extremely helpful giving me an accurate estimate of the recycle value. Within a couple of days the return package arrived with simple instructions on how to prepare the phone and then parcel it up (all at no cost to me). Within a couple of days I received an email confirming receipt and then a couple of days later a further email confirmation that the money estimated had been paid into my account in full. A fantastic service and highly recommended, Thank you.

It’s a great way to recycle your old phone. I was paid in a matter of days and the whole process was smooth. Couldn’t fault it. Excellent service. The offer with the S20 bumped the price up by £100 so always look out for offers.

“Excellent ”

★★★★★

written by SirDaniel95 on 10/03/2020

I used o2 recycle having not known it was even a possibility or how much I'd get, if anything for my old phone. I was more then pleasantly surprised when I was given my quoted price. Almost double what I'd get at my local pawn store. My 02 packaging arrived within the next 2 days with easy instructions on what to do. I chose to insure my parcel but this was purely optional as postage was included and already taken care off. The bit that surprised me was I sent my old phone away on the Saturday, and by Monday the money was in my account. Couldn't reccomend it enough. Thank you 02. 5 stars!

“Recycle with O2”

This was easy and quick money can either be paid directly to you or put into O2 billing account. Would recommend this as I got more than originally quoted obviously depends on state of phone. Would recommend this service to anyone.

As far as know the answer should be yes, as when I returned my phone I had only one charger.

Hello, I believe that the condition of your old mobile 'phone is irrelevant so far as receiving cash for it on recycling is concerned. Hope this helps!

On Tuesday I bought a new tablet in the O2 shop in Edgware. I gave my old tablet into the shop to be recycled. The sales rep told me that I would receive a text confirming offer and if okay, then the money would be deposited into my account. I was also assured that I would have the money by Friday or Monday. It is now 5 days later and I haven't even received a message saying it's been received. I went into the shop and they seemed clueless as to how to resolve the problem. I am concerned I may not ever get my money. Any suggestions?

Did you get a receipt with an order number on it from the store? You should try calling O2 Recycle, they should be the ones dealing with it. It could be a case that the store haven't posted your tablet to the recycling centre, it took them several days to post mine.

So myself and a friend both decided to use O2 recycle. Her phone was valued at £150; my phones at a combo of £320. Both were packaged according to instructions, and sent via Royal Mail tracked system. 1 month later, two separate postings failed to arrive in O2's Falkirk centre. O2 won't accept responsibility. Royal Mail confirmed it has lost both tracked parcels and sends a compensation cheque for £50 both posting failures. So someone in Royal Mail is £470 richer in phones and Royal Mail only had to fork out £100. As a consumer, we are told that as far as it can go. Interestingly, the Post Office said no additional insurance or service upgrade was necessary at the time of posting. Is this commonplace? Has anyone else suffered? Why isn't this risk made clear by O2? To lose two O2 recycle packages from the same Post Office seems suspect to us. Advice anyone? Thank you.

Why should O2 be responsible? To be fair, I would have taken the phones into an O2 shop and done the exchange there. Sending stuff by post carries no guarantee and if it's valuable you should register the package and put a value on it. That way you stand half a chance of getting back the registered cost. I would definitely go to the police and ask them to investigate the post office - but I would not hold my breath on that one.

Similar thing happened to me. Earlier this year I sent my phone to O2 recycle and after not receiving anything I got in touch with them and at first they had said they have received it and it was awaiting processing and then when I still had not heard anything I chased it again... Always by email so I had the proof of the conversation. The second time I contacted them they said it hadn't been received, I forwarded the email to them which previously said they had received it and included the order number and they said it must be a mistake. I spent over a week arguing my case and spoke on the phone to someone in O2 recycle who were no help at all. They said it must be Royal Mail's fault and according to Royal Mail it was delivered to the sorting office and that's all that recorded delivery guarantees, they could not guarantee it had been delivered to O2 recycle. Whether it''s O2 Recycle's fault or the post office's fault there's something not right, I only wish I had read the reviews before using them as many people complained about them. In the past I have always used Mazuma and had no problems, I decided to give O2 Recycle a try, big mistake! I'll never use them again! Next time I advise Mazuma.

I used O2 recycle but I just admit I went to the store and it was their responsibility so I didn't have a problem. There is a complaints procedure but I don't know how that works I'm afraid.
Report this content goregan Written on: 06/12/2014
Thank you for your feedback. Lesson learned - don't use O2's preprinted mailing labels, and ensure it is sent recorded / signed for delivery. O2 takes no responsibility until the phone(s) is delivered to them. That they offer a free mailing service (under an agreement between it and Royal Mail), is meaningless. Royal Mail only provide £50 compensation on this standard tracking service and it cannot be upgraded to a special delivery service (or so the Post Office told us). It is up to the sender to ignore the free service and package using own labels / Special Delivery. I expect we're not the first to suffer "lost" phones, the police were happy to take a statement, the IMEI numbers and will investigate if there are further reports of loss from this particular post office.

I'm planning on upgrading to iPhone 6 plus on refresh, £48 month, but I know there is a 6-7 week wait for it to arrive, I'm thinking of using O2 recycle to get rid of my iPhone 5 32gb and getting the value credited to my O2 account which at the moment is £168. My question is how would this credit work on my account i.e. would £7 a month be taken off my account over the 24 months new contract or would the full £168 be taken off price of phone or the tariff straight away?

Thanks for answering this question.

As far as I am aware the. Credit for the phone would be put into your bank account I am unaware if you an put it on as a credit. I would doubt it as even non O2 customers can use the service
Report this content pope43 Written on: 16/09/2014
What ever you owe on the new phone ie £49:95 for new upgrade and any thing else you buy in the shop like screen protector car charger will be deducted from the amount you get for your old phone. The rest goes into your bank account for you to use however you like.
Report this content biggles1989 Written on: 16/09/2014
They only offer a cash payment for the phone as I asked if I could out the value onto my bill like you are asking and they said no, sorry
Report this content christypink Written on: 16/09/2014
Yes I was offered it against my account. I am guessing that your monthly bills ( tariff and phone charge) would be deducted each month until all the credit was used up then they would direct debit you as usual. That's how it's worked for me before when I have been given a credit.

I had a terrible experience with the O2 Recycle service. The phone I sent them was in near mint condition, but they drastically reduced the amount they promised to pay due to 'wear and tear' (I could have asked for them to return my phone, but would have incurred extortionate return postage and handling costs). I later read up on other peoples experiences and found the reducion in what they will pay after sending off perfectly good phones to be standard procedure with O2 Recycle, and I came out of the experience feeling totally ripped off. Oh, and to top it all off, they took an age to pay up. If I were you, I'd look to trade my phone in with one of the other alternative phone recycling companies. I've used Mazuma once and they paid the full amount promised, and within a day of receiving the phone.
