“Something fishy going on”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Rehoj45 on 24/03/2024

I had a awful experience with Touchstone Lofts. They spent more time manipulating reviews and covering up their shady practices than actually doing the work they were paid for. When police showed up to question him about his team, it was clear that something fishy was going on.On top of all that, I found out that HMRC are currently investigating him and his company for tax "issues" - interesting to say the least! But it's incredibly concerning to think that this company may not even be operating within the bounds of the law. Avoid Touchstone Lofts - there are plenty of reputable companies out there who will actually get the job done properly.

“Vile, just vile”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gracemurphy on 18/03/2024

I recently had the misfortune of engaging with Touchstone Lofts for a loft conversion project, and my experience with them has been nothing short of disappointing and frustrating. Their seemingly impressive 5 star Trustpilot reviews, upon closer inspection, reek of deceit and manipulation, making it clear that Touchstone Lofts cannot be trusted. One glance at their Trustpilot page reveals a startling pattern. Clicking on the word "verified" exposes the truth behind their so-called 'positive' reviews. It becomes evident that the company itself has written the majority of these glowing reviews, attempting to create an artificially positive image, they all appear to promote the company but with no actual detail of any work done. They even have one from someone in Romania (RO), even though the company itself is UK based, so I can only conclude it was an incentivised employee who wrote it. Furthermore, it is disheartening to discover that Touchstone Lofts has actively flagged all the negative one-star reviews, further suppressing the voices of dissatisfied customers. This practice of cherry-picking reviews only reinforces their lack of transparency and genuine customer care. It is worth noting that all the five-star ratings are conveniently labelled as "invited" reviews, undermining their credibility. These invited reviews only serve to perpetuate Touchstone Loft's efforts to manipulate their reputation, rather than portray genuine customer satisfaction. Despite the evidence of these deceptive tactics, I am certain that this review, like many others, will eventually be flagged and buried by the company. Touchstone Lofts clearly does not welcome honest feedback and is determined to maintain their false positive image at any cost. My personal experience with Touchstone Lofts was a nightmare from day one. The project was riddled with delays, lack of communication, and poor workmanship. Any attempt to address these issues was met with dismissive responses and inadequate solutions, especially by Paul, and occasionally Mantas. It became evident that the company prioritises profit over any customer satisfaction. I strongly advise anyone considering Touchstone Lofts for their loft conversion to proceed with extreme caution. Do not be swayed by their facade of positive reviews, as they are merely a smokescreen to hide their true nature. Save yourself the time, money, and unnecessary stress by opting for a more reputable and trustworthy company. Touchstone Lofts' deceptive practices and manipulation of customer reviews have shattered any semblance of trust I had in them. It is disheartening to see a company resort to such underhanded tactics rather than genuinely addressing customer concerns and delivering a quality service.

“Distressing time”

written by BonnDrfg on 08/01/2024

I had hoped this company would deliver what they had promised, but this was soon realised that it was not the case when I signed the contract and paid the £7500 deposit. After waiting 18 months for any work to commence, they then increased the original quotation by 20% using Brexit as the excuse, so I asked for my deposit to be refunded, but they refused and threated legal repercussions and lied instead. I wish I had checked Facebook and other media before I signed up with Touchstone Lofts, then I would have been properly informed about the true customer experiences as they seem to significantly differ from the constant suspicious 5* Google reviews the company obviously purchase for their website. I certainly would not recommend this company to anyone, unless, of course, you want to experience significant stress, inconvenience combined with huge expense, which what this company appear to be very good and mostly focused on.

“ A Disappointing Experience with Touchstone Lofts ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by XCrespo on 09/10/2023

I recently had the unfortunate experience of dealing with Touchstone Lofts, and I must say it was a rather disappointing encounter. Despite their promise of exceptional service and high-quality workmanship, my interactions with this company left me feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. This review aims to shed light on the numerous issues I encountered throughout my engagement with Touchstone Lofts. Lack of Communication: One of the most glaring shortcomings of Touchstone Lofts was their abysmal communication. Throughout the entire process, it was almost impossible to get a timely response from their team. Emails and phone calls were met with long delays, if any response was received at all. This lack of communication led to unnecessary delays, confusion, and frustration as I was left in the dark about the progress of my loft conversion project. Poor Workmanship: Another major disappointment was the quality of workmanship exhibited by Touchstone Lofts. Despite their promises of delivering superior craftsmanship, the finished product did not live up to expectations. Shoddy construction, uneven finishes, and poorly executed details were all too prevalent. I had to constantly point out errors and request rework, which only prolonged the already-delayed project timeline. It was disheartening to have to settle for subpar work when I had paid a considerable amount hoping for excellence. Unreliable Contractors: The contractors employed by Touchstone Lofts were highly unreliable. They were frequently late or did not show up at all, causing unnecessary disruptions and inconvenience. This lack of professionalism not only impacted the timeline of the project but also resulted in a great deal of frustration and wasted effort on my part. It felt as though my valuable time and money were being disregarded. Poor Customer Service: Lastly, I found the customer service provided by Touchstone Lofts to be disappointing. When issues arose or concerns needed to be addressed, it seemed as though they were not interested in resolving them promptly or ensuring my satisfaction. Instead of listening to my concerns, the owner, and their other representatives often became defensive and dismissive. Consequently, rather than finding a solution together, I was left feeling unheard and unimportant as a customer. Conclusion: Unfortunately, my experience with Touchstone Lofts fell far short of my expectations. Their lack of communication, poor workmanship, unreliable contractors, and unsatisfactory customer service have left me with a major sense of disappointment and frustration. I would strongly advise anyone considering working with Touchstone Lofts to be cautious and explore alternative options. Ultimately, the lack of professionalism and quality exhibited by this company, and in particular the owner, makes it an unreliable choice for any loft conversion project.

“Owners' attitude and customer service stink”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Turnersb147 on 13/06/2023

I would never recommend Touchstone Lofts to anyone. The owner, has no passion for what he does, and it shows in his dull, lifeless customer contact. When he visited our property in Birmingham he lacked any real emotion or creativity, and just appeared more focused on what extras he could add to the contract. He didn't engage with us and kept asking if "we had money in the bank" (same on his website forms) and instead comes across as aloof and disinterested. Moreover, his attitude is terrible. He always shows up late, and never takes the time to listen to our concerns with the project, for which there were plenty! I had the unfortunate experience of phoning their "office", and it was a complete disaster, total incompetence, no one appeared to know what was going on. So I tried to visit the London "office" instead with the hope of speaking to someone in person, but the office doesn’t actually exist despite double checking I had the correct address as advertised on their website. This office was just a front and not branded as Touchstone Lofts, even Google Street view shows this (perhaps I should have checked it before I set off on my journey!). In short, the owner, is an embarrassment to the building industry and should be avoided at all costs. Save your money and go seek a real builder instead.

“Watch out ”

written by rxShepherd319 on 29/05/2023

This company trades under many aliases. Touchstone Builders based in Oxford; Oxford Property Solutions; Touchstone Property Investments - these are just the currently Active companies ran by the same person. Fron their failed companies, you will see £4,250 is still owed to a Charity for rent arrears. The owner's choose not to settle this even though they have the funds to do so! See "Company House" for more. They are only interested in your money, period. All their rhetoric and glossy websites and brochures are designed to attract the Consumer, but it's all fabricated, as you will experience if you sign a contract with this company.

Poorly run, with poor workmanship. They spend more time adjusting and manipulating reviews rather than doing what they have been paid to do.

“They didn't like me leaving a honest review!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SiegmundWarburg on 05/05/2023

It's important for me to stress that leaving reviews and feedback about a service or product is a consumer's right, and threatening legal action for factual comments is not only inappropriate but also unethical, but this is what Touchstone Lofts did to me! I was shocked and concerned to experience that the owner - from Touchstone Lofts is discouraging clients from leaving feedback and threatening legal action for breach of contract when factual comments are posted on social media. I found this out to my cost. This, however, does raise many questions about their professionalism, business practices, and customer service. I know it's not uncommon for businesses to receive feedback, both positive and negative, especially in the building and construction industry, but customers rely on this type of information to make informed decisions about choosing a contractor or service provider, and any attempts to stifle this feedback are concerning. I believe it's crucial for customers to have the freedom to express their experiences and opinions without fear of legal repercussions. To threaten legal action for factual comments that I made can be seen as a retaliatory action, which only serves to harm the company's reputation further. From my experience with this company, I would suggest it's essential to find a service provider that prioritizes customer service and respects their customer's right to provide feedback, unfortunately, this is not one of those organisations. Honest businesses should welcome constructive criticism, look for ways to improve, and address any concerns with transparency and professionalism, but Touchstone Lofts are not interested in doing any of this. In summary, it's disappointing to have experienced Touchstone Lofts using legal threats to discourage us and other customers from providing them with feedback. This sends negative messages about the company's integrity and business practices. We suggest it's essential to find yourself a company with a more customer-focused approach and who values constructive feedback, not just constant five-star reviews.

“Terrible ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Staffordbk58 on 04/05/2023

I had a terrible experience with Touchstone Lofts. The company promised to complete my loft conversion within a certain time frame, but they ended up taking much longer than expected. Communication was extremely poor throughout. The workmanship was also subpar and several mistakes were made during the construction process. When I brought these issues to their attention, they were dismissive and unresponsive. Overall, I would not recommend this company to anyone looking for a reliable and trustworthy loft conversion service.

“Very misleading indeed”

★☆☆☆☆

written by VeraBoyle on 19/12/2022

This company has increased it prices by 15% due to COVID, Brexit etc, yet they do not show this increase on their website which I find very misleading. A typical hip-to-gable loft conversion is £47,000 (exc VAT) on their website, yet it should be £54,050 (exc VAT). Their consumer contract is also worth a detailed read because there are many clauses in their which do not benefit the consumer, for example: you have to obtain their permission to leave a review on social media, failure to do so means you "...agree to pay them £5,000 in damages and a court order to remove such content" so basically, they control the narrative of their own reviews so they are totally biased, no wonder they have such good ratings; why would you need this if you are such a good company as you claim? If you need to see the full contract let me know and I'll send a copy; I also have proof of them falsifying their Google reviews, I can send a copy of this too if you need to validate my claim. I certainly would not recommend this company, unless you want stress, a lot of expense and constant lies.

Don't use Touchstone Lofts. This used to be Touchstone Builders. Unbelievably bad customer service. Did not do what we agreed. Left us with a leaky roof, no response to emails, calls and now we have been told they might be going into administration. Don't use them.

“Fake Google reviews ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CharlottePatel on 02/11/2022

I've just checked the Google reviews for this company, and within the last week of October 2022 they had 7 five-star reviews all with very little text, which is weird considering that if you spent thousands on a loft conversion then most people wouldn't just put "professionals" or a "thumbs up". These look like typical paid for fake Google reviews, so if this company is as good as they claim, why would they need to purchase these fake reviews? Dodgy!

“Horrible, AVOID”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Deven14 on 17/10/2022

I have experience of this company in Oxfordshire. Whilst they appear to have many separate enterprises in Birmingham and London also, they are all under the same umbrella. I have to say that this is the worst construction/loft conversion company imaginable. The reason that there aren't more negative reviews on here is probably due to the fact that he is asking his clients to sign a contract (section 11.5) saying that they won't post negative comments on social media; if you do without "his" consent then you agree to pay him £5,000 in damages and a Court order to remove such content. Whilst he can be very charming, and offers what seems like a full package at a competitive price, don't be fooled! As the work gets under way, extra after extra will be added on - and don't expect these at competitive prices! Touchstone charge an extortionate amount for any extras (including many that they deem 'essential' and will refuse to continue the work unless you agree to them). The work at my property has been completed to an extremely poor standard with terrible workmanship throughout - as described by others. Not only that but it took TWICE as long to complete as he told us it would. Due to the extras, the final cost was 170% of the quote. He will not accept any responsibility whatsoever for any of his mistakes (and there were plenty) he will either lie or ignore you when challenged. He constantly uses the "Contract" as a tool to hold you to account and will threaten legal action if you do not comply with this instructions. If you do make the misfortune of signing his "Touchstone Lofts" contract, then you will also need to INSTRUCT A GOOD LAWYER to work alongside you. All in all, avoid this company like the plague. Contacting Touchstone Lofts was the worst decision I've ever made.

“Don't sign anything ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ShaunaWilliams on 26/09/2022

Good luck if you sign a contract with this lot, youll need it! They charge a fortune for shoddy work, and generally dont know what they are doing. They love to add on the extras and charge well over the RRP for it. If you want to get tricked, then this is the company for you, its the only thing they actually do well, instead of doing what they advertise and promise.

“Untrustworthy company ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/09/2022

He cannot tell the truth if his life depended on it. Like J. H, our project has been delayed by 18 months and in that time all he has done is put the price up and blames Brexit. He has no idea what he's doing. He over promises and delivers nothing. I don't care about leaving this review even though on his "contract" it says "by using social media and providing the project managers name, you agree pay him £5000 in compensation". As far as I am concerned you have already taken £7000 deposit from me and delivered absolutely nothing, apart from additional stress and anxiety. He has refused to refund me. My neighbour says I should report him and his company to Trading Standards, and I may well do that if he doesn't start my project soon..

“I wanted to have a loft conversion and rear extension...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/08/2014

I wanted to have a loft conversion and rear extension to my detached property. I decided to use Touchstone as was impressed from my initial meeting that they appeared to be able to take on a variety of different types of building work - their reviews appeared good too! I paid my initial required deposit to Touchstone to carry out the pre-build design work. My plans were if they carried out a good job on the pre-build work it was likely I would use them for the full building work too. When I paid my deposit it had been agreed that Touchstone would visit the property the following week to carry out detailed measuring. They had requested that they needed 90 mins to carry out the required full detailed measuring. At the time of the appointment, Touchstone cancelled the appointment last minute without any warning. Just some of the other issues I've experienced: - Bills and invoices have incorrect amounts and dates with inconsistency on where VAT is included or excluded  - I found drawings to be confusing and they had little explanation or details on measurements which naturally raised questions on its feasibility and design  - I have found in dealing with both the sales rep and the owner that their communication style is very frustrating and inconsistent, they'd send partial things in email with little to no explanation, they typically wouldn't respond to specific questions that they I asked... I shared my disappointment with their service on a number of occasions and suggested it would be appropriate unless things got better that they should consider returning my deposit... This was typically dealt with my an apologetic sales person to say that they would do better (over the phone of course). Ultimately after too many chances (both with the sales rep and the owner) I requested my deposit back. (My request was based that Touchstone hadn't delivered anything of value to me and they were a company that had completely lost my trust). They refused to provide my deposit back. Although I did consider seeking legal action against Touchstone I decided not to pursue this due to the stress involved. When I told them I wasn't going to take legal action they actually threatened legal action against me requesting the remainder of the balance to be paid. I've tried on a number of occasions to reason with the owner by email but he makes no attempt to deal with this humanely and simply won't answer any questions I put forward to him and then threatens legal action! (Several months on) I still wanted my loft and rear extension and so I had to start all over again with a competitor to Touchstone. I pleased to say it has been refreshing dealing with this new company based in Surrey who turned up at the first appointment to take the detailed measurements, they have since produced fantastic drawings and designs to cater for my requirements. Through dealing with this new company it has made me realise Touchstone treated me extremely badly and disrespectfully.  So, If you are dealing with Touchstone I'd recommend you get them to put every single step they are going to do in writing - I can't highlight this enough! It's also worth making it clear what entitles you to a refund on your deposit. This is the first review I have written of a complaint about any company. I have felt so strongly about the wrong doing here, that I wish to share my experience and am grateful that review centre have given me the opportunity to share.

Touchstone Loft Conversions's Comment

Written on: 24/09/2014

The customer contacted our company for the preparation of plans to be submitted to Guilford Planning for a loft conversion and an extension. A surveyor visited the customers address and carried out a full survey. Scaled sketches were sent out to the customer for approval. The customer then instructed Touchstone to send an invoice for a planning application. Another surveyor visited to take external photos of the property which were sent to the design team.
An invoice was emailed to the customer for the preparation of plans to obtain a "Letter of Lawful development" and to provide three dimensional schemes.
The customer also consulted us on the plumbing system and we provided assistance and advice as required. Touchstone design team provided numerous three dimensional schemes. The customer had input and we made changes as requested. The customer agreed a scheme and instructed us to send in the scheme to planning for validation just before the Christmas break 2013.
The customer was sent a letter from Guildford planning department asking for payment of the planning fee for full validation. The customer contacted our office and asked why detailed internal schemes had not been prepared at this stage. We explained that internal drawings were only finalised once the external scheme had been agreed by the planner, as stated on our invoice.
The customer then stated he did not like the scheme we had sent to the planners. We explained that we could change and amend the plans to his satisfaction as the scheme had still not been validated.
The customer then requested his deposit back. We explained that the works that he had been invoiced for had been done, yet only partly paid for and a refund was therefore out of the question.
We are puzzled as we delivered for what we invoiced for but the customer wanted fully detailed internal drawings which were not on the invoice and not relevant until full planning had been received.

I very much doubt this is a true statement by the owner; I believe the customer any day. From my experience of the company, the owner spends more time falsifying and adjusting reviews than he does building and doing what customers pay him to do. He's well known to Trading Standards and HMRC!

Very similar experience. Inaccurate plans is just the start. The owner is the worst person I have ever had to deal with. If you are going to have any dealings with these guys I suggest engaging a good lawyer before you do anything. If I could brings self to write the full length review of just how bad these people are it would bring me to tears

We fully agree with this reviewer. Touchstone Lofts is currently building our Loft and we have had numerous problems with them. We will put a full review up when we manage to get them to finish the job - it has been four months so far and we are still waiting for a completion date. Though we rarely write reviews, we feel it is important to warn others of how difficult Touchstone Lofts can be to work with, more specifically the owner.

Our neighbours across the street started a loft conversion a month after us, using a different company. They are now finished, having paid £20,000 less than us, and are very happy with the work... our saga continues. Please take heed.
