“Excellent Customer Service! ”

★★★★☆

written by vikkithwaites92 on 17/01/2012

When I first decided to get the internet in my flat I looked at the sky package and reviews and decided AGAINST going with sky for the terrible reviews. I tried to go with two different, smaller companies in my local area that both had terrible customer service, kept me waiting for MONTHS and ripped me off. Eventually I decided that to go with sky would be beneficial with the sky TV as I'm not yet in a digital area and the package seemed reasonable. Unfortunatley Sky weren't able to install the internet until after christmas, when the promise was before christmas. However, this wasn't their fault it was down to my other half that actually recorded the wrong address!! Sky, however, did everything in their power to stop us from having to pay for a second set up fee and got a new set up date for us, free of charge, for two weeks after christmas. They also got Sky TV installed within days, and before christmas, even though we had to wait for for broadband and calls, so we had at least something! We were text regularly with updates and our router came on the date we were told and within the time frame we were told. Once we had set up the router we were unable get the connection. Sky illiminated every possible cause they could over the telephone. This in total took two days and was brilliantly done as they were always willing to ring me back to save phone charges and were always polite, clear and friendly. Also whenever we did have to ring we were priporitised as having difficulties and never had to hold or wait. Once they had established it wasn't down to a faulty router, wrong activation date or setup etc they passed me straight over to customer connection ( i think!!) which usually can take up to 72 hours but they transferred me straight over on the line to get the set-up done asap. This was on Saturday, and after doing line checks, they realised it was a fault in the electrical box outside our home and not down to sky at all. An engineer was sent out first thing on Monday morning who fixed the problem and made sure our interenet was working before he left. Sky also agreed to deduct charges from our bill as the internet hadn't worked straight away even though it was down to BT and not Sky! Also people have complained about the spped of sky, I would just like to say my broadband is as fast as promised, my sky tv works perfectly and my phoneline. I just left this review as negative reviews about Sky put me off going with Sky initially when now after dealing with them I really wish I'd gone straight with Sky and would recommend them to anyone!!

written by on 12/08/2009

After reading the negative comments about sky+ I felt I had to add my own comments. I have had sky+ for nearly 6 years now, NEVER had a problem with it or had to have a service call for any fault with the system. Only issue is thats its a PVR2(pace) so only 40gb hdd but after a good think Ive decided to stay with the box I have rather than upgrade to the 80gb one(pvr3). I wouldnt be without it and well terrestrial tv just doesnt cut it these days, abysmal in fact.
Its all about choice and value for money I paid full price for my system, didnt get it on any special offer and for me its 'MONEY WELL SPENT'.

“First a question for the last post, I thought the hd...”

written by on 19/05/2009

First a question for the last post, I thought the hd would work through a hdmi lead? so no need for a scart???
anyway I recently went over to sky with sky +. I HAD BEEN WITH VIRGIN which runs out in June. I asked to have my tv package reduced but was told I would still need to pay 38 quid a month for my broadband and phone. after much arguing, rather than lose me, virgin offered me phone with free eve/weekends, line rental and 10mb broadband, all for 24.40. I took up the offer and went to sky for my tv.

Now the first engineer came and fitted me a new dish, and box and then left. Being a little knowledgable I noticed my signal looked weak and my recordings were freezing. so I checked the connections and found the cables had not been put in right. I called sky who gave me some details to try first, regarding the frozen recordings. but these also failed, so they sent another two engineers out to solve my problem. It turned out that my amstrad sky+ box had a sticky hard drive and the first engineer had not fitted the cable properly to the lnb. so as customer service goes, I can only recommend them at the minute, bearing in mind I even got the new box free with free install. I did get told that the first engineer was now redundant...

I haven't experienced other similar, competitive products but I could not watch TV now without my Sky+ box. Most of our viewing is from programmes stored on the HD Box. Storage capacity is good and so far has proved to be 100% reliable, so have not had experience of technical support. In my opinion the Sky+ service represents great value.

Overall - we got sky to eradicate the interference problems with our freeview box and the boiler - and truth to be told the way the sky+ package works is excellent. Very simple, very user friendly and excellent for people who want to use the box for all its uses. For Example I have taken the Optical output of the audio and hooked it up to my amp for the dolby stream embedded in the signal - I have taken the second scart output and fed that to my HD recorder so I can back up whats recorded on my sky+ box to Hard Disc or DVD. It really is a very versatile and superb piece of kit. Good Form

written by on 25/07/2008

I think Sky+ is an excellent addition to my overall package i had multiroom added as well and the reduction in arguments is worth the extra monthly amount. I have been able to watch programmes that i would have missed because someone else had the control or i had something else planned.
After the initial bad start we agreed a time and date the engineer was a little late but did call to apologise. Everything went smoothly with sky plus but the multiroom had some issues. The technical department were very helpful and we got there in the end. I really miss it when i'm watching normal TV and can't pause or rewind so beware once you get it you're spoiled forever.

“I have only had my box less than a week and it has...”

★★★★☆

written by rodders14 on 07/12/2006

I have only had my box less than a week and it has played up from day one. The slow response of the controls means when you press a button you have to wait to see if it is going to respond or not, when pressing some buttons the unit thinks you have pressed another i.e. press back up and no message alerts comes up on the screen. It is absolutely impossible to either scroll up through the on screen display as it will very quickly select something completely different or to select a channel by keying the number as it again will get it wrong. But by far the major problem is my sky+ box just crashing and not recognising any commands, therefore having to watch the same channel for hours at a time until it eventually realises I pressed tv guide and will eventually select it and crash again leaving me to watch the tv guide. I have now resorted to watching my old sky box in the bedroom which is a dream to use (in comparison) Just waiting for them to come out now and change my box, heres hoping I get a decent one as I am fed up with this.

“After using Sky+ succesfully for 18 months I found...”

★★★★★

written by Stephen Jones on 10/03/2006

After using Sky+ succesfully for 18 months I found that I had accumulated a lot of 'Dead space' on the units hard drive - I had 24% of stored programs but found I only had 30 % of free space? - After speaking to a young lady at Sky they provided me with the following fix that you may find useful.

To clean up the hard drive space do the following.
1- Remove the viewing card and disconnect the mains supply to the reciever
2- Re connect mains supply (Do not insert the viewing card yet)
3- Switch the unit on
4- Select services from the main menu
5- Select '4 System set up'
6- type 01 followed by select, That will put you into the installers menu
7- Select '7 Sky+ planner rebuild'

Note - This will automatically clean up your hard drive and switch the unit off.

8- Reinsert the viewing card and turn the unit back on.

JOB DONE!

Top marks for this really helpful comment! We've also had Sky+ for around 18 months and had just realised recently that we seemed to be running out of space too easily too often. Then we cleared a lot of our recordings down and it was obvious that with less than 20% used and only 45% free something didn't quite add up...
Anyway we followed these instructions and hey presto, we now have 81% free! I can't remember the last time we had that much space available.
Many thanks - we will be passing this on to all our friends who have Sky+.

written by MrPister on 24/06/2005

Overall I love my Sky+ and think the general features and funtionality they have added are great but I do think there are a few things they could have done better:
1. If you are watching TV 10 minutes behind thanks to the pause funtion then your dog treads on the remote and changes channel you loose the 10 minutes in the buffer. I think they should give a warning to prevent this sort of loss.
2. Bring back the Auto Reminder from normal Sky. Sometimes I want the TV channel to change but not record a program. You can do this in normal Sky but not the new version.
3. A feature they should add to the box would be a Flash Memory slot to allow you to share recorded programs with other Sky Plus users.

A couple of comments in response to your review;
1. If you are watching TV 10 minutes behind thanks to the pause funtion then your dog treads on the remote and changes channel you loose the 10 minutes in the buffer. I think they should give a warning to prevent this sort of loss.
Answer - make sure you have the Instant Rewind function switched on (see Sky manual for details) which allows you to rewind up to 60 mins of any program.

2. Bring back the Auto Reminder from normal Sky. Sometimes I want the TV channel to change but not record a program. You can do this in normal Sky but not the new version.
Answer - you can still set reminders, although you are prompted to hit Select to change the channel rather than it being automatic (or else you might end another recording that is already in progress)
This does not help, Instant Rewind cannot buffer XXmins of every channel, only the one you are watching. If I change to a new channel the buffer is lost! All that is needed is a warning that you are not in realtime and if you change channel now you will loose your buffer. Unless my dog learns to press select after the warning I'll be okay.

I know you can still set reminders but as I said auto reminders are still nice to have and if they could put in safe guards to cope with them so you would not loose recordings. The same way they deal with dual recordings when you are on a thrid channel... it changes for you if you press nothing.

written by honestmike on 20/03/2005

I've had sky for about 3 years and sky+ for just short of 12 months, I will never be without it - EVER!!! Fantastic piece of equipment!!! You've always got something to watch when you get in, fast forward through the adverts, rewind those special football moments and it's very user friendly. Even my bro can actually use it, trust me that's a big thing, complete technophobe!! There is a series record so you never miss an episode. The only real problem I have found is, and it is rare, the box sometimes freeze. If you go for the normal sky+ box and not the sky+160 the recording time is only about 20 hours based on a standard platform. It hasn't bothered me too much but I'm sure it would some people.

I had Sky+ Digital TV installed and very good it is too!
However,I have a Magic Eye on a second tv linked to the Sky+ box.The box sends a current to the eye to make it work, however this didn't work on my box. Thinking it was the Magic Eye, I purchased a new one, then a new remote. Both did not work. After two Sky visits I was told that it was the Sky+ box which was faulty. Sky whould only give me an reconditioned box not a new one, even when it is only 3 weeks old and was never working as it should.
This problem seems to be a known fault on Sky+ boxes and Sky should get it sorted,or at least give the customer a better service, esp when like me,they have been customers for a long time.

“I upgraded my Sky Digital when I moved house recently...”

★★★★★

written by slavek72 on 03/01/2004

I upgraded my Sky Digital when I moved house recently and couldnt wait to have Sky+ installed. It really is quite something to be able to record one channel, watch another, or pause your football while you go make a cup of tea! Recently, Sky have improved the recording facility so one can now record TWO channels at once (but there are glitches eg, your programmes may 'clash', which I think defeats the point). I havent had the need to record two channels yet so I'm not familiar with what constitutes a 'clash'. Another problem I've found is that the EPG can sometimes be inaccurate. The best example is before Christmas when I wanted to record a concert on VH-1; the EPG broke down the programme into one hour slots, even though the concert itself was a few hours long. The Sky+ recorded the concert as such, one hour programmes, with each recording stopping, then starting again a minute or so later. There is no facility to enter start or finish times. However, the box IS a great addition to your viewing pleasures. At the time of this review, the Sky+ is £199 (unless reccommended by an existing subsciber, in which case you pay £149), and if you take the top package at £38, they will waive the monthly £10 Sky+ subs. An optical connection allows direct 5.1DD although this is limited to the occasional Sky movie; I would have thought though, that the technology is available to be able to record without adverts, or for programmes to record as they start and not according to the EPG (shows get delayed occasionally). Upgrades get downloaded automatically and Sky are constantly improving their facilities. All in all, the Sky+ box is a wonderful addition and despite the glitches mentioned, is still highly reccommended and well worth the money.

Written on: 07/01/2004

i wrote the above review dated january 2004; however, since writing i have found inaccuracies in some of the information. in particular, i have found that there is indeed a facility to program start and finish record times (as opposed to simply recording via EPG or banner). this is done from within the 'services' on the remote, under 'manual recording'. also, the price of £149 was a promotion to selected existing subscribers and will not apply to everyone.
