“Unsafe, lame and poor value”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/03/2016

I'm going to be very hard on rallyschool in this review, but for good reason; I've worked at 3 professional race schools on motorcycles, so I know how days like this should run to get the safest and most enjoyable experience out of the opportunity. I bought the "Subaru Rally - half day" for my wife as birthday present. She drives too fast, I thought this might give her a reason to think about speed in a different way. I was wrong, she wasn't allowed out of second gear. From the gate opening 15 minutes after the published start time, to the complete lack of welcome, to the bored instructor briefing, the blocked female toilet that nobody attended to - even before we started the alarm bells were ringing. It gets worse - judging by the entire crew standing around one of the cars and yanking it's wheel, it was clear that Subaru #11 had a major problem with the nearside front wheel BEFORE the day started. Halfway through the morning they pressed this ailing car into action. The steering almost immediately broke, although thankfully the speed on the unmarshalled circuit is so low being only first and second gear that the car ground to a halt quickly, blocking the hairpin. They couldn't move the car, so they moved the tyres and cones that make the circuit to avoid it! This now meant that the handbrake turns (the highlight of the event) were exiting onto a piece of track which was also used for people to get out of static cars. Thankfully it was the instructor's side, but still, it was another unbelievable derogation of safety matters. The day failed on the levels of safety, welcome, vehicle maintenance, education, experience, customer support and value. The Subaru experience is £169 for (3 x 3 lap sessions) that's 9 laps of a 400m course laid out on using tyres on an old runway, which takes around a minute per lap. There are 2 "fast laps" with an instructor at the end. Fast is a funny expression for wiggling through some gentle turns in second gear with a handbrake turn at either end. It was at best 10 minutes of lukewarm action crammed into 3 and a half freezing hours. Guests are housed in a temporary building that was too small for the assembled masses and had one 3 bar heater that kept tripping the fuse! I offered Rallyschool.co.uk the chance to engage with me on this issue before publishing this, and the reply I got doesn't really engage with the gravity of the situation - "Hi, I'm so sorry to hear your feedback of your wife's time with us on Saturday..... Obviously we do not like to hear of anyone having a negative experience, and we apologies that it did not meet you expectations on this occasion. We have many people attend Rallyschool and have some great feedback, including positive feedback from other drivers about this weekend... I will certainly relay the points you raised to the instructors to help us deliver the best experience we can in the future." So there you have it - a poorly organised, overpriced experience, using poorly maintained cars on an unmarshalled track of dubious enjoyment. Staff have no customer service skills and are so thin on the ground that the instructors have to get out of the their own car onto a live track and move the tyres that their pupils have knocked about. Often the track was so dusty or congested that cars had to slow down to avoid each other. My wife bless her, had a nice time, and so did some other people - but this experience relies on novice track drivers being "wowed" by 2 handbrake turns per lap on an otherwise undemanding course, and the fact they have to wear a crash helmet. At £19 per driven lap (each of about a minute) it's enough to make you weep, but when allied to the rest of the experience - well, here I am, signed up to reviewcentre for the first time ever; that tells you all you need to know. Complaining is a rotten thing to do, but if this review saves anyone else being taken to the cleaners and exposed to the levels of safety this lot employ, then it will have been worth it!

“this is not rallying”

★★☆☆☆

written by Sheaj47 on 23/07/2014

the school itself is shabby and located on a small piece of tarmac. in order to get the cars sliding the course is watered with a mixture of oil and water. do not expect tuition on a loose surface because there isn't any! the time spent in the car is minimal and certainly not value for money. all in all a disappointing visit and the glossy web site certainly does not reflect the experience on the day. steer clear and go to a proper loose surface rally school.

As new owners of Rally School as of the start of 2015, we have revamped the buildings at all sites, also extended the length of the track at the Shropshire site, increased driver time, and revised the slip quality on the track which is not on Tarmac as stated.

The two sites at Worcester and Buckingham are gravel.

The Shropshire site has been going the longest, in fact since 1989, so I believe Rally School must be getting it right for it to be going for this long in a very customer driven environment. In a business such as this, your not going to be around for very long if the customers are not happy. Twenty 26 years in business and still going strong, speaks for itself.

“Best Rally School Ever”

★★★★★

written by on 20/06/2012

The day was amazing, I have already done a rally experience run by another company and it just did not compare to this one at all. All the staff were friendly to not only the drivers but the friends/family who went along. It rained in the morning but this did not dampen the enthuseisum in the slightest. I was bought this gift directly from wwww.rallyschool.co.uk for Christmas and now im planning to buy it for my dad for his birthday Highly highly reccomend.

I have just attended the full rally day at Shropshire Rally School.
In total I was there for six and a half hours and in the car driving for less than 15 minutes.
The rally stage is a tarmac airstrip, made slippy by oiling the surface....nothing like a true rally surface and nothing like the pictures in the brochure and online.
The facilities are poor.
If you are going to spend your hard earned money on a gift for someone I would advise you look elsewhere.

As new owners of Rally School, I personally would be horrified to have a customer who has been at one of our sites on an all day course and had less than 15 minutes driving time. This is obviously totally and utterly unacceptable, and this will never happen again.

All pictures on the website are from are own three sites, and not taken anywhere else's, to suggest otherwise quite frankly is ridiculous.

The track is not on Tarmac, and the slip quality has been improved to our customers liking.

As we are a rally experience, we are out in the countryside, and therefore use portable toilets, which are changed and cleaned regularly. Hot drinks and snacks are always available. The site is kept clean and tidy. Helpful, professional and friendly staff only used.

As new owners at RS, briefings are kept to a very maximum of 15 minutes so as we can get the customers into the cars a lot quicker. Waiting time has also been reduced as this is something we where aware of and keen to improve.

Driving time has been increased, the track at Shropshire is not on Tarmac but a newly synthetically modified surface, which are customers are now more than happy with driving on.

“My family purchased the Rally Rush experience for my...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/11/2010

My family purchased the Rally Rush experience for my birthday and after phoning up and booking a few months in advance I forgot that I never received a confirmation. As there was a google map on the site I hired a car and drove 2.5hr to the venue. I called up 15 minutes before my experience was meant to start as I was in it and couldn't find the venue due to its poor aka zero signposting.

I arrived exactly 2minutes late and was refused into the briefing even thought they had literally just gone in and when they owner came out after the briefing I explained that I was meant to be in the briefing but I wasn't allowed in, he gave me a dirty look and walked off before coming back 5 minutes later. He then told me to read a piece of paper as he wouldn't brief me and that if I made a mistake my course was cancelled - this was compared to the rest of the people on the course who had three chances.

I pointed out that this was unfair before the owner then proceeded to shout and swear at me in front of the other customers and then out of blue cancelled my course. The other customers were disgusted and came over to make sure I was ok, while the other instructor said that this was a common attitude from the owner and that he was generally an unreasonable person.

Distraught I returned home and emailed their head office who forwarded the email back to the owner who sent me further emails of an aggressive nature.

I would not recommend this experience company to my worst enemy and that they should be avoided at all costs.

As new owners of Rally School, this can only be described as a complete and utter horror show much to my utter disgust.

I personally have delayed briefings so as our late comers can join in and not miss anything.

As new owners, looking after and caring for our customers is paramount, and behaviour similar to what you experienced previously will not be tolerated in the slightest.

written by sfr10 on 16/09/2010

After attending a rally experince at rallyschool.co.uk i came away very dissapointed. The day was bought for me as a gift but we both came away feeling the same. The experience was over very quickly and the venue was not a typical rally stage but a basic course marked out. The driving part was ok but the taught you in cars that were very basic, no more than a standard road car with a roll cage.

As new owners of RS, driving time has been extended and the track lay out revised to be more challenging.

I am not sure which course you did, but a 280 bhp four wheel drive Subaru Impreza or rear wheel drive 180 bhp BMW? I can assure you 99.9% of our customers think these are brilliant cars. The Focus is a good car also, great fun.

Yes all rally cars start out as a stripped out road car, then fitted with a roll cage. You forgot the bucket seats, four point harness, uprated suspension, uprated brakes, uprated clutch, revised camshafts, programmed ECU, so the same as your normal road car?

I would like to mention you stated the driving bit was okay, that's good because that is what the experience about. Thanks.
