Better than carrying a few books around, my Kindle is perfect for me. I wonder what other people expected when they bought an electronic book reader, and were worried that it doesn't surf the net. This is not a tablet it never promised to be one to me, it does what it promises on the box, hold electronic books, and it does it superbly well. So if your want to read at home or on the move then this is for you. I have had mine for 3yrs now and have not had a problem, iv'e dropped it, knocked it... (read more)

Kindle Keyboard from Ammo Summary - nice concept, very limited use, great support, wish I'd bought a tablet instead. Don't like - inability to use the wifi as an internet tool - except for buying books from Ammo. Don't like - useless music player - no means to select what is playing, nor skip tracks. Don't like - battery problems, seems to be a software glitch which runs down batteries on a day or two. Don't like - lack of french language ebooks from the minor authors and authoresses. ... Wasn't sure whether I'd take to this but it's fantastic! Just been on holiday for a week and hardly put it down the whole time. It's so clear and easy to read and it's great being able to read something which would usually be a heavy hardback and have it be light! The way the text looks on the screen is so close to the look of a real book and doesn't strain your eyes at all - it's not sharp white and black so you get a much softer feel. The only slight problem I've had with it is that it... (read more)

I love my 3G wifi kindle model. The ability to arrange your books into categories is fantastic. Using this kindle model to read books, makes me love not having to turn the pages and to be able to read outside and not having pages flapping all over in the wind. The only problem I have with it is, that sometimes it crashes and it needs to be rebooted. (read more)

I've had my Kindle 3 for about 6 months. The Kindle is an odd device - it's the kind of thing where it's tough to see the benefit of it before you actually own one. Now that I've got my Kindle 3, I occasionally get asked on the train or bus "are those any good?" & here are the notes that seem to change people's minds: 1. You can highlight sections, bookmark, add notes to a book. 2. You can use it to surf the web - even abroad - without any extra cost. 3. You can download books wherever you... (read more)

I too kept thinking about purchasing a Kindle my only regret is I left it so long to make the purchase. I chose the 3g and it works really well, I love the convenience that I can pop my kindle into my bag (I do not have a huge bag) and it's there when I am out. Waiting for someone to meet up with you and it can be boring not anymore just pull out the Kindle and sit back and relax, they arrive just turn it off and put it back in your bag. No worrying about it getting crumpled in your bag... (read more)

Macmad's review really says it all. I confess to be somewhat of a traditionalist but when I received a Kindle for my birthday together with a huge variety of books, what could I do but give it a go. I am thrilled skinny. I haven't explored any of the extra functions of the Kindle as I have been too busy reading books. I simply cannot fault it. What I would add to Macmad's superb review is that the purchase of a cheap cover from somewhere like Ebay is a must. It is comforting to know that... (read more)

I have always been an avid reader and was interested in e-books as soon as I heard about them. The price of the books put me off a little so it wasnt until I realised that Amazon prices were so reasonable that I bought one in May.I am able to buy the books I want at the same price as the paperback versions in Tesco and have even enjoyed a couple of the free books. I also travel a lot and previously needed to take a few books on holiday. I have the 3G version and although the browser is very... (read more)

In short. I love kindle. I was reluctant on having a kindle because, I was less interested to miss smell of the book whilst reading a fresh book. My cousin gifted it to me last month and since then, I have not been touching any of my books rather downloading'em from Amazon. Bless the habit but, I like reading sci-fi and drama together, that keeps me fresh for both the books at 1 time. Now it feels like carrying a library with me. Albeit, I miss the smell of books now, this little companion... (read more)

I have been debating for ages to purchase a Kindle but the price of £111 has put me off. There is an alternative, Iff you own an Android mobile with a decent size screen you can download Kindle from the Android market. This is a fantastic app which costs nothing an is equally as good as the real thing. The only difference is the screen size but you can adjust the font size to your liking. All the books that are available to buy on Kindle can be bought for the Android version. A lot of books... (read more)

Sometimes when you are offered an extended warranty people normally just think no thanks, well as the kindle is such a new device i am sure something may go wrong with it in the future, therefore i was amazed just how easy (and cheap) it was to extend the warranty to my newly bought kindle from Amazon, i was also amazed at how professional the people at SQUARETRADE were, i had already used them for my newly purchased Home phone trio package and thought that was so, so easy to set up, surely... Somebody else said it here, but I was also sceptical about the Kindle, I love reading and I love books, physcially holding them. But a mate of mine showed me his kindle and it looked good and then my husband bought me one for our wedding anniversary. I haven't looked back. As an avid reader, I'm amazed that in the past 2 months since owning this, I've been reading even more. It's just great. My only issues are 1. As an Irish owner, I was automatically signed up to kindle.com US site,... (read more)

No, but I would recommend it to an avid reader with cash to spare. It's a luxury product not unlike Apple's iPad. The Kindle, despite its technical shortcomings (screen contrast and interface design) will be a great product to those who read regularly. Because for those who don't, once the novelty of the Kindle wears off, the product has no place in an average user's daily life. It does take a little bit away from the experience of reading a book, but that is entirely made up by its... (read more)

I cannot recommend the Kindle 3 highly enough - don't hesitate to buy it. First class choice of books on Amazon site, plenty of them free, and you get Wi-fi/GPRS Google browsing as well on the higher spec model. High quality construction, big inbuilt memory and you can synch across to your laptop to read on from where you left off. Excellent screen quality even in full sunlight. Amazon Kindle site's very good, but beware the "buy by 1-Clck" - it's easy to buy things you didn't intend to! (read more)

I haven't felt this excited about a product since switching from walkman to mp3 player for the first time. All of a sudden I could have thousands of songs to listen to wherever I went, all in a small form factor. And I feel the same way about the Kindle 3. It's my first e-book reader, and I was quite hesitant about buying it: Do I really need this? Will it prove useful, or will it collect dust in some corner after the novelty has worn off? Yes, it has proven useful--very! As a non-native... (read more)

I thought long and hard about buying a Kindle it is a big outlay in cash. E books are a bit expensive especially considering that the publisher has no costs as such but hopefully they will come down in price. All that said it is so convient to carry around with you. I was definitely a kindle skeptic... My wife bought me one for fathers day and now I am completely hooked. The thing to remember is that it is not trying do be a book. It is something different. It is a reading device which is intended to make it as easy as possible to find, buy and then read the books you want. In that sense it works perfectly. Well done Amazon. I am 100% converted and may never buy another book again... (read more)

I wanted to buy an ebook reader especially as lots of people I saw on the tube seemed to have one and they looked comfortable holding and viewing it. I read reviews and the Kindle seem to be the winner although I noticed there are a few eBook readers on the market. The Amazon Kindle 3 was the latest one to be released from Amazon recently and this looked like the best, I really didn't want too spend much time looking for an ebook reader (although Barnes & Noble's Nook colour ebook looks... The kindle works well and the screen tone makes reading easy on the eyes. It's also great to be able to store so many books on a slim, light weight device and be able to carry them abroad - makes a real difference from lugging 6 books on holiday! But the big downside is that i don't feel as involved or engaged in a story i read on a kindle as I do with a real book. there's something about holding a book in your hand, turning each page in anticipation of the surprises that await on the next... I hemmed and hawed a lot before ordering the Kindle; my first e-reader. I thought perhaps I'd miss something about the experience of reading a book. Perhaps I'd miss the feel of it, or the smell, or turning the pages. In actual fact, the only thing I miss is being able to re-read the cover and back page when I put it to rest after a long read. There's something satisfying about absorbing the cover and imprinting it on your memory, especially after you finish the last page of a book. Anyway,... (read more)

The review above echoes my thoughts exactly, however, there is an epilogue to the story in my case.
I received my Kindle as a gift from a colleague in the USA some 3 weeks ago. I was already familiar with the device, by using my son's Kindle 3, so was over the moon when Mine arrived.
Following a few enjoyable days of reading, It slipped from my fingers and the screen was broken!
I was horrified. I didn't know if the warranty would even cover faults for a unit purchased in the USA and transferred to the UK.
I contacted Kindle USA using their ring back system, they even pay for the call, and, after a brief explanation of the damage, I was offered a replacement free of charge!
The replacement duly arrived after only two working days, less than a week overall!
This, in my experience, is simply the best service I have ever received from a company.
Amazon/Kindle are to be congratulated, their support system gets my vote as the best in the business.

I agree with this review wholeheartedly although I do think it would have been better with a backlight - I still disturb my husband in bed by putting the light on - again - a minor detail. I would have been on of the last people to contribute to 'the demise of books' but I still read books - as the reviewer says - this is great on holiday and if you are away and a lighter 'book' is more appropriate. I love it.

PROS: light, very readable, easy to navigate, lots of display options. 3G great for fast access to amazon shop. Supports PDF, DOC etc and there is huge range of free material out there. I am academic and this beats luggng theses, dissertations, journals and endless print-outs around.
CONS: easy to break screen, must have a solid case. Remember this is mainly an ebook, not a browser (can do a little on 3G) and a primitive MP3 player. Designed as an ebook and as such it works ...

My husband bought a Kindle and I thought it would be one of those *foot spa* or *bread maker* moments - used a couple of times and then put in the back of the cupboard. He has had it for 6 months and uses it every day. The quality is excellent and it is worth every penny. We will save money on baggage charges at the airport and I will never have to buy another book shelf. A real must have for readers. (read more)

I recently moved home and upon seeing the vast amount of books and the space they take up took the plunge and looked for an eReader. I am a self confessed Amazon fan so the Kindle was pretty much my only choice. The new 3rd generation is lighter and slimmer than previous models which I always thought looked a bit ugly. The only downside to ordering my Kindle was the wait. It proved to be pretty popular so was on back order for about a month. But it was worth the wait. As they claimed, it is... (read more)

Two months on and I still love my Kindle. It's great to be able to still read my book when packed onto my morning train - one handed! I bought a leather case that has an inbuilt light so I can read in bed without annoying my other half. Also just being able to pop my Kindle in my handbag and not have to lug a seperate bag around is worth it. The battery life is good, unless I'm browsing online it lasts me around a month and I've packed it full of the free Kindle books that Amazon have like Dracula and Sherlock Holmes.

<br/>I'd wholeheartedly recommend as a Christmas gift for book lovers.

When an aircraft is taking off or landing the consensus is that a Kindle is best switched off. This doesn't mean throwing the switch, this just puts the Kindle to sleep. You need hold that switch over for 5-7 seconds until the screen saver disappears.
