Written on: 22/05/2013 by McMahoj (1 review written)

I was looking for a gym that was close to me, to help me lose weight as well as have classes that I could go to and everything included, when I went in, the staff greeted me like I was a special person, had a chat with a manager who reassured me about different memberships and go me on the system instantly, they shown me around the building, got to the gym section, within seconds, I have a trainer who is ready and willing to help a novice like me and got me on the apparatus with a tutorial,... “Only interested in your money”

Written on: 14/05/2013

I had been a member of Greens at Wakefield which was always overpriced for a number of years. Unfortunately my wife fell ill at around the time it was taken over by Nuffield Health and I found I no longer had the time attend to attend. I went to cancel my membership but was talked in to freezing it for a year. At the end of the year I was sent a letter saying payments would start being debited again. I rang to say I would not be renewing o be told I needed to pay a further months payment... (read more)

The sheer gall of a company trying to make a profit!

Presumably they were able to explain the terms and conditions of the freeze when you agreed to it? Did you ask whether a final payment was needed at the end?

My sarcasm aside, Nuffield should have made some concession for the length of time you were a member, but people do need to read their membership terms and conditions before reviewing - lest they end up reveiwing their own silliness!

Written on: 10/05/2013

Stay away, this "chain" need to sort themselves out if they are going to remain in the Market place. Membership fees go up every year, more than inflation, their excuse, is because they have made a massive investment just recently in the new decor, general feeling in the gym is that this is no longer worth the money, many people are leaving and going to cheaper gyms like LA Fitness or DW. Written on: 03/05/2013

My experience at the Cheam branch has been very disappointing from start to finish. I was mis-sold a 12 month membership package and the sales guy who dealt with me did not explain the terms and conditions at all. Constant up-selling emails and text messages aside, I am still waiting for a promised call from the Commercial Manager to explain what is going on and why I am being charged a premium rate. Absolutely abysmal customer service. (read more)

“Awesome Health Centre”

Written on: 22/04/2013 by Naniingym

I use the health centre in Cannon Street and this is 2 mins walk from my work place. The place is really awesome and the people are very warm and truly customer focussed. I have used different gyms in the past but must admit this is the best one so far. I enjoy going to this place so much that I have lately started going twice a day. And also not to forget to mention, the place is quite well maintained. (read more)

I've had my run ins with Nuffield (Cannons) in the past and do feel they lack severely in the customer care business. The staff and personal trainers always made me feel like I was doing them a favour and I lost count of the ammount of times I was snubbed by the receptionist!

Go small and independant all the way!

“A "jobsworth" manager”

Written on: 04/04/2013

I had been a member of Greens on Napier Street in Sheffield for approx. 9 years when it was taken over by Nuffield about a year ago. In the beginning, Greens was a true club: the atmosphere was friendly, the manager accessible, and the staff lovely. I am not one of the "biceps Bills", and it did not bother me that some of the machines were not as pretty as the latest models, however, a change of manager did bother me since it brought about a change in the feel of the club. “Getting worse by the day”

Written on: 24/03/2013 by Disappointedmember (1 review written)

What used to be a fantastic customer experience and enjoyable visit is now a trial and battle against appalling customer service and reduced cleanliness. I use the Nuffield, Greens, Wakefield and have since it opened and I am saddened to see this centre go so down hill so quickly. In recent bad weather, no attempt was made to clear the car park, the pool was closed with no communication to all members - they have my mobile number and email address but I had no notification of closure. If I write full details you'll not read as too long winded! In short. A member for years but only as nothing else in my areas. Cleanliness poor, customer service ok, but maintenance always an issue. Staff always blame head office. Always blamed as incompetent fools. Give them no money to spend on mending things! Then this year huge price increase, with transparent offer to provide some free digital health monitoring thingimigig. But only offered if I took the premium price increase. So, its... (read more)

Nuffield Health in Willesden Green/Brondesbury is poor at maintaining basic standards of behaviour in the gym. The following is allowed: nose blowing in the pool, dirty and littered changing facilities, loud swearing (in front of children), swimming after sauna without shower, nose blowing/expectorating in communal showers, e-coli outbreak in jacuzzi(?), razor blades left in showers, shaving in communal basin (hair let everywhere), look-at-me screaming by weightlifters, complaints... “A Hard Sell and Awful Customer Service in Sheffield!”

Written on: 12/03/2013 by NickS1972

My wife was sold a '3-month' gym membership contract by a Nuffield Health salesman at the Napier St branch, Sheffield (near Ecclesall Road). The termination clauses were not explained, and charges continued after 3 months. When my wife called to ask why she was still being charged, the receptionist told her that there was nobody there to solve the problem, but that she should speak to 'Ms X' the following day. (The receptionist also advised that the salesman had been a new member of staff at... (read more)

Hi, sadly these clauses are often quite obvious in the terms and conditions of gym memberships. Nuffield aren't very good at giving a new member the opportunity to read the contract before they sign it, but sign it your wife did.

I'm not defending Nuffield but would you take out a SKY TV or mobile phone contract without reading the small print??

If you book into a class there is no guarantee that you will actually be able to get into a class as they are often over-subscribed. Don't be fooled when you go to see the Nuffield Health gym in Chingford for the first time. It looks nice with lots of equipment and the pool but it really isn't good. Hygene and general up keep was my major issue with the gym. If you wear goggles in the pool you will see that it is filthy with all sorts of things floating around in the water. I am happy with my local Nuffield gym, they have plenty of space and equipment, good classes and instructors, a nice pool, it's always clean and I can usually get into the classes I want by booking the day before. This is a very expensive gym. They can clearly not justify the price they charge. With two monthly payments in this gym you could cover the annual fee in a bigger, better, newer and cheaper gym in liverpool like the Gym Group and Ben Dunne Gyms. When I joined Nuffield Health Gym in Chingford, London, it was known and run as ´Greens´ gym despite already having been taken over by Nuffield. For me a fundamental part of joining the gym was to be able to ´freeze´ membership (& pay 10GBS per month to hold the membership open) whilst out of the UK (I live abroad and am in the UK for 3-4 months each year). I'm no fan of Nuffield (Been ripped off by them in the past!) but did you check the terms and conditions of your membership? There's a good chance it will say that they require a months notice to terminate your membership (most gym companies do!) and if you have just cancelled your direct debit you are in breach of that contract!

There may be milage to argue that they didn't uphold their end of the deal by giving you the second MOT test (which is a joke in the first place - don't get me started!!!) but I'll wager there is something in the terms and conditions of your membership that let them off of this!

Good luck arguing it - any win over Nuffield is a bonus for me!!

I'm not defending Nuffield here, but this is a case of buyer beware. Essentially you signed a legally binding contract with them which said you will remain a member of the gym for 12 months no matter what. You ought to have really checked to see if they had a redundancy clause before you took it out.

While I'm no fan of Nuffield Health (I've been ripped off by them in the past!) I find myself jumping to their defence in this instance. Your review is full of contradictions - you say the gym is more of a child friendly zone, but how can that be so if the gym is dark and depressing and the manager has a rough appearance, I would think that is the least child friendly place!

Also, you say there are lots of elderly people that go (which is it - child friendly, or not?) but what is your point? Are the elderly to be banned from public places now?

I do wish that people would be constructive about their bad reviews!

While I agree with savvygymuser that gym contracts usually roll on a monthly basis after the initial period I agree with TERRYPLUMBER's criticism of mis-selling. I was also mis-sold a 3 month membership to a Nuffield gym in Wandsworth. I was specifically told the membership was for 3 months ONLY and wasn't informed that it would roll monthly. After I saw a direct debit payment out of my account at the start of the 4th month, I called and cancelled but they said since it was the 3rd day of the month and I need to give them a full months notice I would have to pay for an additional 5th month. I won't be going near a Nuffield gym again.

Yes I totally agree you said they are"DODGY SALESMAN SIGN UP PRACTICES". One very dodgy salesman in Bromley Nuffield Health. He has spiky hair, wear green uniform and wear big Fly-style black plastic glasses. Don't signed anything with this guy. He promised you everything but he played tricks when you signing the contract. And I even didn't noticed that.

When I signed up the agreement, my 2 years old daughter was running around. I remembered I say I just want to try 3 months. The sales said OK and use the "Blue ball pen" to tick the 3 months commitment box in the contract. Then I was careless because my daughter was running around in the lobby and I was not concentrated in signing the contract. They had written the commitment date for "12 months" in numbers in the details by using another "Black ball pen" and I didn't really know about it until today.

I went to cancel my contract today (more than 3 months time from the agreement I signed). They shown me "their system" & "their contract" written down that I have my name signed.

They shown me there isn't any "ticked" in any of the commitment tick-box inside the contract in their copies. So there is no evidence to show that their sales helped me to "ticked" the 3 months contract in their copies. And they say there is only "ticked" in my contract in my copies with a different color "ball pen marks".

So I asked them are you saying I "Ticked" it myself using "another colored ball pen" in my contract???? I told them I was very sad and I felt I have been tricked.

They given me a signed contract to make an illusion that I was signed up for 3 months commitment. But they didn't do any "ticked" in their contract to say I have signed up for 3 months. And they told me they only counted on the "date" I have signed, not the "ticked" in the box.

And I asked them "Is this the way you guys didn't ticked the commitment box in your copies, and it provides you a chance that then you can charge me as long as you want?". And the sales said "No we didn't do that but I didn't know why there is no (ticked) in our copies".

I am sure if I really want to find out the case. From the CCTV camera, I clearly remembered that the sales went to the reception to took another colored ball pen for me to signed.

Now I can't cancel my contract. And I have to pay until the 12 month period. I am going to do reviewing on all Bromley's forum to review this bad sign up practices. Be careful all the the mums, don't sign anything while your kids are running around!!!

i agree that this is not the best way to go about it via nuffield. however normally when your initial contract ends it does go into a rolling contract until you go and cancel it yourself because there is no system set up to cancel it after a certain period of time. another example is a mobile phone contract, once your contract ends it goes into a 30 day rolling contract until you cancel it or otherwise say so its the same principle

In response to sweetrnb - YES! Gym contracts are just like mobile phone contracts and SKY TV. We can't just cancel them because we don't feel like going anymore!

Review centre why won't you let me swear?????!!!! Probably because you know I won't hold back on how bad Nuffield Health in Bristol is.

Not only am I not afforded the same benefits as new members (Body MOTs, free months, free personal training etc) but I am apparently expected to pay a lot more too! I was shocked to learn from someone who had just joined that they were paying a full £20 less than me to use the same (shabby) facilities at the same times of the day. I asked to be dropped... You did the right thing by taking your business elsewhere! You should rejoin Cannons/Nuffield again in a few months - you can guarantee they'll give you a favourable membership rate then!

Update on this - I have joined Nuffields main competitor just down the road which is a great gym that doesn't charge me for un-needed extras! I'm still getting weekly emails and texts from Nuffield though, inviting me back! No thanks!

I have been a member since Cannon opened in Norbury and then changed to Nuffield Health
It has gone downhill. There is at least 2 to 3 equipment fault for days and the lockers are the worst never maintained all made like MFI cupboards. No safety in the gym, theft is a big issue as they just pull the door out of the locker. I believe the theft is done by the employees of the Nuffield and not people from outside. The shower area is not clean.
I would say do not join this Gym even if they... (read more)

I have just cancelled my membership to Nuffield Health and Fitness at the old Canon's in the City of London in Cousin's Lane, largely due to their mis-selling practices and utterly unprofessional nature. I had signed a direct debit for my what I thought at the time was a three month contract. They managed to lose my direct debit as one of their IT people "deleted" all their direct debit mandates. So, I was then chased, and I mean harried, for the missing month. I was out of the country at... (read more)

My house mate went to her free trail just one week later than me (I m the one with the review just below), didn't sing up at the same day, she was contacted by Nuffield Health 3 days later, that if she signs up now, she will get the first month for half price.
Treat them mean to keep them keen. Sadly this is how it works, don't sign up and they will offer you the world! When you sign up, you will just be a source of money for them. (read more)

Is your friend paying the same as you? You should have asked for the benefit as well!

Having been a member of Nuffield Health in Paddington for some time, I have been pleased to see they have continued to invest in their facilities even during the hard times.

The gym underwent a huge extension which incorporated a new free weights area that was great for me. In more recent times, they have also bought in a new set of new dumbells, personal training equipment and a new sauna.

The place is in a great location, is clean and the staff are friendly. The classes are good too... (read more)

Having been a member of the Nuffield Health (previously Cannons) gym in Norbury for 2 1/2 years, I am in absolute amazement at the poor equipment maintenance across the board. I regularly use the Concept 2 rowers for my training sessions. The fans are never cleaned and the fan resistance is so low that you cannot do a meaningful session. Having complained about this for 2 years with little or no action, I decided to ring the head office. All I was told was that "the equipment is usable". Is... (read more)

Nuffield Health Community or more likely Nuffield Health Mafia!!
Try us out for free!
This is how it all started. A gym offering a free training session, how nice! I went on Wednesday, 16th of February for my free trail. After using the gym and the pool I decided that £49.99 per month was a nice offer and told the staff that I want to sign up for it.

very good. From my own experience they are the "computer says no" kind of people. They don't realised that annoying customers won't bring in new customers in. They are not worried about any negative propaganda you may do.
In the past I sent 3 people there - who did subscribe, 2 of them subscribed for 12 months which means I should get a month free as they advert but I didn't even know my friends told them that I sent them there.
In my case it was the Nuffield Health from Brondesbury Park / Willesden so you can see it is the SAME thing.

I was a member at Nuffieldhealth gym at Aberdeen. The facilities and location are good, however after being a loyal member for almost 2 years i found the customer service upon leaving dreadfull.
When i asked about cancelling my membership (because i was moving) i was told to send a letter to head office, which i did. I then recieved a letter back requesting an e-mail (for some unknown reason!) So i did this aswell.
After a week of no reply i asked at my gym and the receptionist said the... (read more)

Had some problems cancelling my membership at Nuffield (Cannons) in Bristol. Despite being long past my contract and having been told that I only needed to give one months notice I was then told that I needed to give three months notice. I wasn't prepared to do this as I had already started a contract with another gym so argued the point - only to have them turn around and say that it was indeed one months notice. A blatant lie that they went back on when challenged!

I was a member at the Nuffield health club in Bristol for 4 years. The Club is very neat, tidy and well thought out and overall I was very happy with the level of service.

Gym equipment could take a while to be repaired and it seemed to get very busy, but the staff are friendly and knowledgable.

As I didn't use the swimming pool or the exercise classes I did feel a bit like I was getting a bum deal, paying over £60 per month the use the weights machines, but since it was close to home I... (read more)
