On unpacking the set top box, I was surprised at how modern and compact it was. The STB202X12 is simplicity itself to set up, the process being aided by clear, concise instructions. In operation, I can't fault the product at all. It is used in conjunction with an amplified set top aerial and old portable TV and works perfectly. The supplied remote control (with batteries!) is of good quality and easy to use.
The STB202X12 represents excellent value for money, so why pay more for less? I have bought several Bush products from Argos (e.g. a DAB radio), and without exception they have worked effectively and proved to be reliable. Those who label the brand as "cheap junk" don't know what they are talking about and are no doubt happy to pay 2-3 times as much for products which are no better or inferior.

“The Bush STB202X12 is a DVB-T Freeview box which can...”

written by kentynet on 25/07/2010

The Bush STB202X12 is a DVB-T Freeview box which can receive standard Freeview channels and radio stations (no Freeview HD or Freeview+.
The Bush STB202X12 is rather a small device and fits neatly into your existing set up. The box is a glossy black colour and gives a nice, rather modern look to the set-top-box.
It features no buttons on the device itself, but instead you are required to switch the device to and from standby by pressing the power button on the nice-looking and easy to use remote control.

The Bush STB202X12 has two LED lights behind a black perspex shield, a green light for when the device is on and a red one for when its off (technically in standby - you have to power-off the device at the wall socket).
The Bush STB202X12 has a energy saving function and only uses about 5 watts of electricity in standby (about twice as less as an energy saving light bulb) and not much more during operation.
The set-top-box has two scart sockets, a 7 day electronic programme guide which was fast-loading and easy to use, Red button and digital text compatibility (which was also very fast - probably due to to the newer software featured in the box). Also amongst the features are subtitles, automatic (and fast!) setup, an RF-loop through, a remote control with batteries and a aerial extension lead (however no scart cable is included).

When using the Bush STB202X12 I was very suprised and pleased to see how thoroughly modern, easy to use and stylish the menus and epg were. I was expecting tacky menus and slow software to be honest, but the box's software is really quite advanced and very well-finished for a box that cost me only £25 new.
The setup menu is very graphically rich and the set-top-box can change channels very rapidly (a feature also seen on many Philips Freeview boxes, but lacking in most I've used), the picture quality was great as was the sound (but remember you also should have a good scart socket to really enjoy this!), the box was very rapid at accessing digital text services also, on BBCi it went the fastest I've ever seen any Freeview box I've used access it - BBCi loaded in less than a second!
The EPG (Electronic Program Guide) was great! I was expecting something tacky, lagging and to be honest, rubbish for £25 - but no, its really well-made! The epg is fast, easy and looks great and has the full, standard Freeview 7 day EPG plus the Now and Next listings. On some Freeview boxes the picture disappears when you view the EPG and you can't watch the program at the same time, but on the Bush STB202X12 the TV program is shrunk into the corner allowing you to glance at the EPG whilst still watching the program and listen to it.

The Bush STB202X12 does have one flaw though, a minor one however - I don't think its quite as "strong" at receiving signals as some of the other boxes I've used such as many of the Philips boxes. However all I noticed was minor "stuttering" from time to time, not very noticeable and it happens on all Freeview boxes when they get interference on a signal, and considering I've only got a shoddy old £8 aerial on the roof I think it performed really well! (Latter I coiled the long aerial wire, which basically got rid of the problem - I guess it induced a slight magnetic field)

Also I'll just add a bit of information about the Bush brand - many people think Bush and Alba are well, junk, but they've improved in recent years and Argos actually bought out the Bush, Alba and some other brands from the old owners.
Argos now outsource most of the manufacturing of the Bush and Alba brands to other technology companies, a Turkish company called "Vestel" seems to make most of their set-top-boxes and presumably makes the Bush STB202X12.
The build quality of Bush and Alba has significantly improved and the two brands are now becoming quite desirable.

So back to the Bush STB202X12. I would very-much recommend this Freeview box, it is just a great little device for the little money I paid for it, the Bush STB202X12 is very impressive with the sheer ease and neatness of its software and is a very stylish and well-put together Freeview box and is much recommended!
