On a rash decision we decided to find a new home for our dog. After putting out an advert and feeling as though it was in our hands they rang us. I thought it was odd a charity searching pet adverts. She bamboozled me on the phone from me saying he had nipped our next doors little girl to her saying he must be terrified of children and we must find him a new home as (in her words) if he's nipped it's only a matter of time before he will bite her face off!! I was shocked and went ahead when... (read more)

My first dog came from Kathy at Yorkshire Rose Dog rescue and he is the best thing I ever did! He has had his moments but that's not the rescues fault! They took him in and re-homed in. Reading some of the previous reviews, I really don't know what people expect when they get a rescue dog. You have to be prepared for the unknown. Also, it can't be easy for Kathy to judge a dog's behaviour 100% when they are only with her for a short period of time. My Lhasa Apso Teddy has changed so... (read more)

A lovely small rescue, with dog welfare very much at the heart of it. We got a small pup mongrel from Kathy and we were in fact very pleased we the way it all went, meeting the dog several times to make sure he matched with our other dog. As for the donation even there I was quite happy since they are a charity and I'm sure they need these to look after the other dogs in their care. (read more)

We had a bad experience dealing with West Yorkshire Dog rescue. We had specific requirements for a rescue and they found a match! Hurrah! He was good with kids, cats, dogs, recall, and house trained! Or.....non of the above. We have had our rescue dog for well over a year and he still is not house trained but is better in some other areas! We had NO support or follow up help - I feel let down that we were lied to about the dogs behaviour and needs but we can't and won't give up on him now... (read more)

After seeing Barney on Kathys web site and plenty of conversations, we drove to Huddersfield from Nottingham to go and meet our new pal. She was fantastic with her advice and even rang us a few weeks after to see how he was doing.I would certainly recomend Kathy shes totally right with her decisions putting the right dog to the right owner. The dog we addopted was seen by some other couple the day befor us but they were not suitable, but her advice to us and out knowledge of previos dogs... (read more)

Unfortunately I did not have such a good experience with West Yorkshire Dog Rescue and Kathy!!! We had a lengthy conversation about our situation and after a later visit (2hr drive away) she said how happy she was and we would be able to cope with the dogs but she clearly had a change of heart a few WEEKS later when she finnaly decided to get back in touch with us, after numerous failed attempts for us to contact her (your calls and messages are not returned!), and tell us after we have... similar experience - we had positive home check & then had 100 mile round trip to see the dog we really wanted. waste of time and money when someone acting as god illogically decided we were not the right people to give a lovely dof a good home

Kathy at West Yorkshire Dog Rescue is the best ever!!!
She is wonderful with her dogs, she loves them all, her dogs are either with her, not in kennels or cages but in her house or running free in a lovely fenced field specially for them, or housed in foster homes. I adopted a Lhasa Apso from her in March and I recommend everyone who is looking for a dog to try Kathy first. There is nothing you won't know about your dog from her, she is honest and caring and her dogs come before anything...

Lovely people to deal with, who obviously care very much about animal welfare. We adopted a dog about 6 weeks ago. The fee/donation was quite steep compared to other dog rescue organisations. I was told that the details of her previous vet would be forwarded to me so that I could obtain her medical records. I would then know when her booster is due etc. After several reminder emails, I'm still waiting, and they didn't even have the courtesy to respond to my last email. For the dogs continued... Very interesting account - I am so glad your lovely adoptee doggie is happy with you :)
But having written a review without reading previous ones, I just want to add that I was asked to pay £150 - so I suspect the 'donation' may be variable... based on, well, I'm not sure what!
I don't intend to berate the 5 stars you have given - your experience was great and I'm thankful for that.
But I do want to re-iterate that given my experience in the rescue world, this centre is not performing to ethical standards.
Anyone considering a rescue dog should be prepared for dramatic changes in a dog's character - but this home knowingly withheld vital information regarding serious behavioural problems.
And given that experience, from a non-novice, I would caution any potential adopters to be overly-thorough when meeting their potential dog.

I think that the adoption fee may have increased in 12 months. I don't know if they are with-holding any information. What makes you say that? We have had some behavioural issues with Teddy but how can they know if the dogs are strays?

I'm not saying they intentionally withhold information in all cases - nor for malicious reasons. Bear in mind that not all dogs are strays - many come from families who can no longer afford them, that are splitting up and can't keep them, deaths of owners, elderly owners etc. Previous owners provide detailed background knowledge in these cases. Even with strays, the best 'selling point' of this dog's home is the lack of kennels - this swayed me into believing that if the dog has been fostered in a home environment, even for a short time, it's behaviours would be far better understood and documented. In my case they withheld information and very much bent the truth in the hope that I would just accept the dog's problems, leaving them able to help another dog. This clearly is well-intentioned, but I cannot agree with a home not being up front about all the information they have, nor advertising a fostering environment that would have adopters believe the dog's behaviour has been closely scrutinised when this is not the case. Returning the dog is one of the hardest things I've had to do, but it was totally mismatched and it would have been impossible for me to keep the dog and others safe. A very sad and costly experience all round, that needn't have happened if the home stopped aiming for the quickest possible turnaround and focused on intergrity and honesty.
And re the minimum donation fee, I think a rise from £80 to £150 per dog is hefty over less than a year. Given that the amount doesn't seem to be stated on the website I can't help wondering whether it's determined by a quick assesment of the car you drive or the like... Just a thought. Perhaps future reviewers could state the amount they have been quoted to clear it up.

Hmm well my dog is a Lhasa Apso and the nature of the breed is to be little monkeys. Having said that, my cousin was the fosterer of him for a month prior to us getting him. She's very experienced and I don't think she would have let us have an aggressive dog nor anybody else for that matter.
£150 is nothing considering what it costs to buy a puppy. I wouldn't hesitate in paying that. In fact we did pay that as we included a donation. They chipped, neutered, vaccinated, treated for kennel cough, clipped, bathed, groomed and reformed a cherry eye operation in him for that so I got value for money. I guess if you are getting a dog that's already had a home and been looked after then you won't get the same value.
I would definitely recommend them.

Did you get your dog Teddy from Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue or West Yorkshire Dog Rescue?
