Galu was one of the best restaurants we've been to and the selection on the menu was second to none. The food itself was exceptional and was presented beautifully on the plate. The staff were more than helpful and served us with smiles. The only downfall of the restaurant was the music... it was too loud and people want to be able to talk over their meal which we found wasn't easy.

As a regular customer I am slightly reluctant to disclose our local treasure. However I feel I owe it to the owners and their fabulous team to let people know how great this restaurant really is.
My husband and I dine at Galu on a monthly basis, (since March 2010), and neither of us has ever been disappointed by the food or service.
If you ever get a chance to try this place, the veal chop is to die for! And the sticky date and toffee pudding absolutely mouth-watering! As an extra the cocktails are on the same level as London's Lab Bar which is almost unheard of for a restaurant in the sticks!
Please keep up the good work to all at Galu Banstead!!!!

“We sampled this restaurant after being recommended to...”

★★★★★

written by greenteas on 24/10/2010

We sampled this restaurant after being recommended to go by friends. We wanted somewhere special as it was our anniversary this weekend, but will definitely return before next October!lol The outside looks amazing! It's tucked away in a quiet road in leafy Banstead, and reminded me of a classy restaurant you find in the South of France. Beautifully designed and very very welcoming. The inside was just as good, though we were slightly disappointed to find that the only table available to us was situated by the toilets. But being a Saturday night we should have realised it would be packed, so shall definitely book a table for our next visit.

But our slight concerns at out seating soon evaporated when the very charming waiter came to our table and took our order. He was polite, friendly and made us feel very at ease. We started with the most delicious prawns ever, and the filo pastry filled with spinach and cheese was cooked to perfection. For our main course we had lamb cutlets and chicken souvlaki which were tender, juicy and delicious, and cooked just perfect. The meat melted in your mouth and the flavours were to die for. We had a very nice bottle of rose wine (recommended by the waiter) and what a good choice he made.

All in all we had a fabulous meal - despite our table being close to the toilets. Food was top class, wine was gorgeous, atmosphere great, and waiter was attentive, charming and very pleasant.

We will definitely be returning, and won't leave it until our anniversary! lol

10/10!

One tip: do book before you go to get the table you want. We went last night (Saturday) and didn't expect October to be so packed. I can understand why though. Excellent stuff!

“When we arrived from the outside the restaurant looks...”

★★★☆☆

written by The Dootch on 21/10/2010

When we arrived from the outside the restaurant looks amazing. Then when you enter, the experience gets even better, with snakeskin style leather chairs, and a certain swanky ambience, it really gives you a feel that you're in a great place. We were there a little early so sat to have a cocktail. I went to the bar, and was totally ignored by both members of staff. One went to answer the phone and the other i have no idea where he went. When they returned we order 2 cocktails & they were both lovely and we were brought our menus to peruse. We chose what we we wanted and said we were ready to be seated. The waiter asked us where we would like to sit, and we pointed, and he basically said help yourselves. We had to hang our own jackets and seat ourselves. We were one of only 2 couples. we then ordered our starters and another cocktail and a lemonade. The lemonade came and it tasted like the post mix was off. after spending 5 minutes trying to get the waiters attention he finally came and changed it. He apologies and said he mixed the bottles up. My brandy sour was horrid. It must have contained half a bottle of Angosure bitter. Then our starters came which were massive and fantastic. I had seafood pasta and my partner had scallops. They were both amazing, possibly the nicest we've had. The for the mains. I had a version of a mixed grill and my partner had kleftiko. Both again was fantastic and very generous. Mine came with chips which spent 10 minutes sat under the hot light despite the chefs effort of banging the side and shouting service. So i basically ate my main without chips, then the chips seperately, and we also ordered mushrooms which the waiter forgot to write down. He then proceeded to get them for us and bring them out after we had finished our meal, so we had a lovely bowl of mushrooms. The food here is possibly some of the nicest i've ever eaten, but the service is definaitely the worst. Good food & chefs are hard to find, but good service is easy. The restaurant will never succeed if it employs barely speaking english people to serve. There is no interaction, and it tottally spoilt the whole dining experience. I would definaitely return for the food alone, but strongly suggest they get some good english speking waiters who can actually turn this restaurant into an award winnning one as the food deserves.

What an absolute blessing to have such a devine restaurant on my door step. The food is amazing and the staff are attentive and friendly, this is the best restaurant for miles especially as I live in Banstead. Would normally have to travel to London for anything close to this level. Not any more.

We went to Galu in Banstead for the first time on a Friday night. The place was very busy and the service suffered as a result. Whilst pleasant enough the staff seem rushed and a little unprofessional, missed drink orders etc. One older member of staff who I think is one of the owners was in the kitchen yelling at the cooks which is unwise when it is open to the restaurant. One of the reasons for the less than perfect service and its the main problem with the place is that they cant hear what you are saying to them as the noise level is incredible. Its a very big room, all hard surfaces and the noise just reverberates around.
If you want to propose marriage to somebody here then I suggest you do it in writing otherwise she will think you are asking her the time.
The food however is fine, cooked well using decent ingredients. Its pretty straightforward stuff and reasonably priced. A drink, two courses each and a bottle of wine comes to c£70 including service for two.
Given the lack of good restaurants around here it will do well despite its shortcomings.

Dined mid-week off the set menu . Meatballs to start and Pork for main. Nothing wrong with the food as such (pork a bit dry) but nothing special.Won't be returning though. Reason ? 12.5% service charge added to bill which goes straight into the owners pocket instead of the servers. Wrong.

“Galu has a 2 seating policy and we had a table booked...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/03/2010

Galu has a 2 seating policy and we had a table booked for 9.15 on Saturday night which is on the 2nd seating. We arrived, had to push our way through the crowd of people at bar waiting for tables to get to the resturant desk to let them know we had arrived. no one offered to take my coat and I stood there for several minutes with it in my hand and eventually someone reluctantly took it and told me to have a drink at the bar. The bar was overloaded, people sitting eating bar snacks and drinks at the tables whilst loads of people swashed in around them waiting for a drink. The bar staff were too busy doing table orders to serve us. Eventually we did get a drink and at 10.00pm after the 3rd promise of seating us (there were loads of people there before us that still hadnt been seated) in 5 minutes we walked out and went to the curry house across the road, appalling!!!!! I have guessed price and quality of food rating as we never actually got any.
