“Good points: ”

★★★★★

written by TwinCam on 11/05/2011

Good points:
Great styling, this really is a good looking phone in black or white.
Screen quality is fantastic and only beaten by the newer super amoled screens and also that of the iphone 4.
Loads of Features too many to list but of course it's an android phone, So it does everything a smartphone should.
Sony announced the X10 is getting android 2.3 so it's going to by upgraded to the latest software [Android 2.2 is available for those that root there phone].
Good reception and call quality, also wifi, bluetooth, 3g and so on work as should too.

Bad points:
Battery life is not that great but no worse or better than similar speced phones such as the htc desire.
If im being picky access to the memory card is blocked by the battery, but then again i don't change memory cards often.

Overall the Sony Ericsson X10 is a great Android smart phone. I would say that if your getting a contract or can afford to pay a premium for a pay as you go phone or sim free etc, i would look into the newly realised [date of review 11/05/11] line up of duel core smart phones [such as the samsung galaxy s 2] or sony ericsson's new flagship model the xperia arc and of course there is the newer iphone 4. But these will all be at a premium for some time so i currently recommend the xperia x10.

“I have upgraded to X10 after three years of happy...”

written by binio on 28/02/2011

I have upgraded to X10 after three years of happy marriage with Nokia E90.
It is amazing phone with large touch screen. It will completely integrate with your google account which is fantastic thing. All your contacts agenda, calendar hooked up and backed by google can not get wrong. Phone performs very well and is very responsive and easy to use. As downside there is no quick dial facility however it can be obtained by installing extra app. There is no radio either so all those people who use it regularly will miss on that. The biggest downside is that battery life is average one day which is pretty disappointing. As the whole phone is is a gem to use battery life needs improvement as it was for me the big put off.

“I am now on my third sony ericsson xperia X10 since...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/02/2011

I am now on my third sony ericsson xperia X10 since October 2010. The first X10 went back because it could not send text messages, the second started to turn itself off after a month and now the third will not connect to WiFi. This one is now being replaced by the fourth X10 as 3 network will not change the model over for me or cancel my contract. This phone is just a complete waste of time - if you want a phone that does work, DO NOT look twice at this terrible example of a smartphone, I am disgusted.
I have now had to buy a cheap phone as a back up because I will NEVER use this phone again. Didnt even want to give it one star, you have been warned!!!!!!

“If all you want from a smart phone is something that...”

written by on 26/01/2011

If all you want from a smart phone is something that looks pretty and flashy aswell as having the capability to download apps then this is a good phone for you. However if you wish to have signal at any point, recieve your texts within less than an hour of them being sent to you or to actually recieve your calls, look else where. I have had constant trouble with this phone due to signal issues, it also has a terrible battery life (the phone also sometimes chooses to switch itself off when it has a quarter of its battery left). The screen occasionally freezes whilst changing screens and finally the keyboard isn't sensitive enough, usually missing letters when you type them causing you to struggle to replace them.

I was amazed to find on a phone with this many good things going for it, there is no way to convert the qwerty keyboard to a keypad for predictive texting! Once you are used to texting on a number keypad with predictive texting enabled, there is just no way you can go back to a qwerty keyboard, especially one designed for the smallest, thinest fingers in the world! I sent it back on the 2nd day!

“I've owned a more than a few smartphones starting with...”

★★★★☆

written by Jasonnaicker on 26/05/2010

I've owned a more than a few smartphones starting with the old SE P800, a couple of windows phones (from Win 5 to 6.5), Nokia E71 etc. So I can look at it from several different angles. I got the X10 as an upgrade on T-Mobile.

The screen is truly lovely, nice, big and bright. The downside of this is that the battery life is poor, although this needs to be considered against the specs of the machine and if you download "Advanced Task Killer" and "free memory" both of which are free from the App Market and your battery life will improve dramatically. Get a car charger and disable the "Timescape" or set it to refresh less often and you should be fine. In short the battery isn't a patch on the Nokia E71's but the processor used to struggle on the E71.

Call quality and reception are good - easily on a par with Nokia (I'm comparing this with phones I've used in Central London - if you're in the sticks it might be different).

The Android software appears very stable - in a week I've pulled the battery twice (and that was due to me not knowing how to force close an app - I used to use the HTC application on my Windows phones). Now I know how to force close, no more problems (I would say RTFI but SE don't supply a hard copy manual - it's all on the phone). The app market is very easy to use.

One thing that caused a bit of annoyance was not being able to sync directly with Outlook (there is sync software but its not cheap) and the enclosed "Moxio" appeared to be too much of a faff to be easy. You have to sync through "Google" so I deleted the sensitive details from Outlook, downloaded the Google app to sync with GMail, synced then physically entered the stuff on the phone I don't want Google to have.

The BIG downer is that there is no bluetooth handsfree dialling - there is voice dialling but you need to press a combination of buttons to use it - so forget safe handsfree for driving! Several phone shops told me that I could download an app for hands free bluetooth, BUT these only work on Android 2.1+ and the Xperia only runs 1.6 (along the SE website suggests that there will be an upgrade in the winter). If you google bluetooth voice dialling on the Xperia then you'll see a lot of unhappy drivers. Sort that out and it'd be 4.5 stars (.5 for the battery - the apps I've listed should be included from the start).

The camera is very good (as are all SE) the only issue is the flash - there isn't one - you turn the LED light on and it stays on which sucks power out - so daylight only.

“The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is a beautiful looking...”

★★★★☆

written by reviewkitten on 07/05/2010

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is a beautiful looking phone. I have been waiting for some time now to upgrade from my very old K700i. I was loath to get an iPhone as to be honest I like to play games at home and really wanted my smartphone to be able to use the internet and keep up with social media like Twitter and Facebook. Ok the battery life might not be brilliant but that's really only if you have Timescape updating all the time, switch it to update every 3 hours, turn off 3G when you're not using it (i.e. at work or when you're sleeping) and you'll find it lasts longer.

The touch screen I have found is good and perhaps the problems lie with those with bigger fingers (mine are fairly dainty). Android market has pretty much all the apps I could want and I don't see any marked problem with running 1.6 instead of 2.0 Android but then this is my first smartphone.

I would like to be able to change the colour of Timescape but it doesn't bother me as much as I had thought it would. I got the phone for £47 on an 18th contract for £35 a month including unlimited texts and internet and 600 minutes which I feel is a good price. All I need now is a nice case, which I'm having difficulty finding, hopefully as more people buy then new ones will come out.

Give it a try, you very well might just like it.

Great Camera 8 MP
Very quick to process
Android Market is very good, similar to the Iphone app store.
Amazing screen quality and massive.
Also the phone screen is big but very slim phone.

Harder to use compared than the Iphone but it is for more advanced users.

Very poor battery! Not even a whole day if you take pictures or watch videos.

“Pros: Large, bright screen, responsive user interface,...”

★★★★☆

written by duncanFrance on 11/04/2010

Pros: Large, bright screen, responsive user interface, openness.
Cons: The touchscreen seems a little fiddly at times.

I tested an iPhone once and liked it except for the fact that it had appalling reception and most of the time I couldn't make or receive calls at home. Since then I've been looking for a touch-screen smartphone. My must-haves were a good camera, GPS and a large high-res screen since my eyesight is no longer brilliant. For me the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is the best phone on the market today.

The bundled apps are pretty good - if you're a Facebook or Twitter afficionado you should find Timescape pretty handy. The face-detection software in Mediascape is not just cool but also pretty useful if you take a lot of photos. I thought I'd miss the lack of an FM radio, but since I have just downloaded several hundred tracks from Spotify I think I'll get by!

My only real gripe with this phone is that the touch screen seems a little off sometimes - I have to place my finger slightly further up than I expect. However not only is this consistent, but other people who are used to touch screen phones seem to have no problem with it so I guess it's something I'll get used to.

If you're coming to this phone from an iPhone you'll have to also get used to the idea of a decent camera and the freedom to run as many apps simultaneously as you see fit. And being able to make calls. And having a torch built-in. OK I'll stop now......
