“Fiji Shark Conservation - Absolutely amazing time!”

★★★★★

written by Hackett441 on 27/02/2019

I participated on the Fiji Shark Conservation project in October and November for 5 weeks and had an absolutely amazing time! I was recommended by a friend who had completed the project 6 months prior and he wouldn't stop raving about how much he enjoyed it and I completely understand why. The experience of diving with sharks is surreal and I learned all my PADI qualifications on this project, introducing me to a completely new world. The thrill of knowing you are actively helping such beautiful animals is great. Best volunteer work I have ever done. The staff helped make it incredibly enjoyable, the accommodation and food where brilliant. The people who I worked with on the project where also great fun and I have made friends for life with most of them! Projects abroad are a very simple way of sorting out a travelling experience of a lifetime (at what's maybe a slightly higher cost). Especially for the Fiji Shark project however which I believe is the only one of its kind its well worth the money!!

“Great experience in South Africa with Projects Abroad! ”

★★★★★

written by jamescarnell on 27/01/2019

I had a great time working on Projects Abroad's Music Production course in Cape Town, South Africa. The Projects Abroad staff were really friendly and made it easy for me to settle in when I arrived, whilst my host family were really welcoming, and I had the best time staying there! After my induction day, I started work at my project and I'm still wondering where the time went; I should have stayed for longer! The set up at the music studio is amazing, and the guys there are really friendly. I definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about getting a head start in the music industry. I managed to get involved with a lot of things (from social media marketing, artist discovery and music production to even organising a vinyl release of one of the artist's EPs.) Away from my project, the Projects Abroad staff organised weekly socials, which was a great opportunity to meet new people. My favourite socials were sunset on Lion's head and a bike ride around Sea Point followed by dinner at the Mojo Market! It's also great living with other volunteers, as I was able to explore Cape Town at weekends with them and my housemates. Whilst I was in Cape Town I went to the winelands (more than once!), climbed Table Mountain twice and went to watch Western Province (rugby) play in the Currie Cup semi-final, among many other things! Cape Town is amazing and there's so much to see and do! Overall I had a great time and definitely suggest anyone thinking of doing a course here with Projects Abroad should absolutely do so! :)

“4 week Cambodia public health project”

★★★★☆

written by Cooktr188 on 06/01/2019

The public health project, by Projects-Abroad was very rewarding. A typical day would involve a stock check, cleaning childrens' ears, cutting nails and teaching hygiene lessons at a school in the morning, then taking blood pressure/glucose and giving medication to adults in the afternoon. I loved the hands on approach (taught how to do everything during an induction) and being able to teach prevention rather than just treating them. At times it was difficult due to communication barriers and there only being 1 supervisor there to talk to patients. I loved being given a small allowance to spend on them - I chose toothbrushes/toothpaste, pencils and books. A little money can buy a lot there. I stayed in a volunteer house, sharing a room with another volunteer. Although not a luxury room, it had everything you needed. The humid heat took getting used to but rooms were air conditioned. There were a couple events a week to get to know other volunteers and we ate together. There was a lovely cook and you could request more/less of specific food - noodles/rice with beef/chicken was common. Staff regularly checked on us and we had many numbers to contact in case of a problem. Cambodia has lots of public holidays, but this meant more time to have weekend trips away to explore the country. I learnt some Khmer, made friends around the globe and helped improve the health of many.

“Teaching in Sri Lanka”

★★★★★

written by AlvinToffler on 06/01/2019

As you enter the arrivals lounge at Colombo airport, the first things you notice are the noises in the city and the intense heat and humidity. I immediately asked myself why I'd had brought so many jumpers and pairs of jeans. I never thought I would see sweat marks on the knees of my jeans by 10 am each day and a t-shirt that looked as if I'd just pulled it out of the washing machine. Teaching in Sri Lanka is an amazing experience. The children are delightful and you're constantly greeted with high fives, random questions and even autograph sessions. The Actual classroom experiences could be difficult and I was sometimes left on my own, trying to deliver lessons with a very excitable group. I would advise people to get support from the teachers and learn some Sinhalese!! I like the fact that Projects Abroad create a family atmosphere amongst the staff and the other volunteers. We were a tightly knit group and we often went on a lot of weekend excursions. Sri Lanka is a wonderful country, but you have to be prepared for some very long journeys, regardless of the mode of transport. My host family was excellent and I ate a lot of Sri Lankan food. I didn't quite get used to eating with my hand, but maybe next time! I would really recommend the Projects Abroad package to people of all ages. I'm an older volunteer, but always felt included and welcomed by all of the staff and volunteers.

“Nepal Building Project”

★★★★☆

written by James286 on 03/01/2019

Like many people I wanted to go travelling, but give something back at the same time and be more involved and understand the country I wanted to vista and explore, which was were Project Abroad gave me this opportunity. I had looked up alot of other companies offering similar trips and found them to be no where near as detailed in how their operation worked, and after reading the PA web site, and watching many of it's videos filmed by normal people like me, I was sold. They assisted me over the phone before I chose to sign up for the project, and pay any money, and offered me feedback from other volunteers, which again was independent, and helped me feel confident in their organisation, so I signed up for 4 weeks in Nepal for the Building project, and also a further 3 weeks in the Himalayas in Nepal for the Conservation Project. The building Project is very hard work, so dont be thinking this is a walk in the park. I was fortunate to work for just under 2 weeks finishing a school build, and then for just over 2 weeks starting a new project from scratch, so I saw both ends of the spectrum. It's hot, and sweaty, tiring work, but the host family I lived with were amazing. The food was different, but very nice as you'd expect, and the room was enough to get by, whilst sharing with a group of other guys, at the busiest time there were 10 of us with there family of 4 in the large house, so it felt like a big family. Social Events were held each Friday in Thamle, where you met other volunteers, and had some time out to explore the town, and generally get a few for Kathmandu, and outside of the working hours once home in the evenings, albeit you were tired, were free time for relax. PA organise everything for you, from collection at the airport to getting to and from work, it's part of what you are paying for and hence why I will loo to do more work with them in the future.

“CHILDCARE VOLUNTEERING IN NEPAL 50+”

★★★★★

written by bethasilcock on 14/12/2018

I had a wonderful time during my Two Week Senior Special in Nepal with Projects Abroad. Planning was made easy for me by the staff and they were quick to answer any questions I had about the project and the travel. Once I arrived, I was made to feel very safe and comfortable by the local Nepal Projects Abroad staff members. Our working hours were very well managed and organized. We were placed in a local school and enjoyed both helping to refurbish the buildings and also getting to know the children through conversation and play. The school and the children were very welcoming and really seemed to enjoy us being there. Our off-duty time was, again, well managed with a lot of sightseeing, local events and dining on traditional food. We saw many temples in and around Kathmandu, as well as a trip to the Edu Farm and the city of Pokhara to visit the temples and lake. Accommodation at the Little Nepal Inn was basic but very comfortable, and the staff there could not have been friendlier. They spoiled us with traditional food and many many smiles. While in Nepal, I did and saw things that I might not have if I went as a regular tourist. I enjoyed meeting the people of Nepal and really getting dug into the community. I am definately planning a new adventure with Projects Abroad for 2019!

“I was in Nepal for 4 weeks with Projects Abroad and...”

★★★★☆

written by Barrett190 on 21/11/2018

I was in Nepal for 4 weeks with Projects Abroad and spent 2 weeks doing the general care project at MSPN New Life Centre and 1 week doing the building project at Nava Suryodaya English Secondary School. The Projects Abroad staff were enormously helpful throughout the planning of my project and during the whole of my time in Nepal, even during the week I spent travelling alone. The general care project was a little disappointing due to the fact it was difficult to plan activities for the children because they were at the centre to heal from illness and so were given their own freedom to entertain themselves as they wished. However, other volunteers at different care projects seemed to have more opportunity to be more active in their role. I would most likely do the teaching project, if I were to repeat the project, due to it appearing to be more structured and effective. The building project was very active and we always had some work to start or finish. It was also easy to see the building work progress which made my short week very fulfilling. My favourite part of the project was meeting other volunteers also staying and volunteering in Kathmandu at the weekly Friday Socials, which always included a fun activity before dinner at a local bar.

“An unforgettable experience!”

★★★★★

written by Jessbollands on 19/11/2018

I had a brilliant 4 weeks in Cape Town as an intern at Nash Records, a record label and recording studio. I have just graduated from university and it was an amazing experience before heading out into the real world! My host family was so kind and welcoming, I loved being at home and spending time with my host mum and my roommates. The accommodation was really comfortable and the food incredible! When I wasn't at home I was out exploring all the sights Cape Town has to offer: hiking up Lion's Head and Table Mountain, seeing penguins and seals on the South Peninsula Tour, visiting Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens, going on safari and eating at lovely restaurants with other volunteers. Karaoke at The Brass Bell each week was also a highlight! My project was great, I learned lots about the music industry that I am putting into practise now I am back in the UK. The team at the studio were really friendly and fun, and I made friends for life. Thank you Projects Abroad, I know I will come back to Cape Town!

“High School Building In Nepal”

★★★★★

written by on 26/10/2018

Our biggest worry going into the trip was safety. Of course, Nepal is a developing country, and I was scared of adapting well despite the friendly and charming faces I'd soon recognise as a second family. In my opinion, ProjectsAbroad high school special takes safety to the highest level. The co-orodinator never leaves your sight, and by the end of the trip almost becomes a second mom. The company picked a comfortable, basic hotel, well beyond expectation size wise. The airport pickup and description was very accurate. Volunteering on a building project with other teenagers was an enriching experience. It was clear that, by the end of the trip, all of us had matured in more than one way. We had learnt how to live in a developing country, how to manage ourselves with a newfound independence and the importance of charity and aid in third world countries. It also highlighted the bottom-up approach, and taking a hands on approach to volunteer work. I would recommend the trip to anyone.

“Projects Abroad Review”

★★★★★

written by yoStafford1949 on 25/10/2018

I heard about Projects Abroad from a school career fair so I knew that the company was legitimate. I was kept very informed and up to date about everything in the lead up to my project and being assigned a volunteer advisor allows you to ask questions and you receive answers to your queries within just a few days which was very helpful. Projects Abroad organised all of my travel for me and arranged my pick up in the airport for me and transport to where I would be doing my project which was great. I would definitely recommend using Projects Abroad as my family and I were very satisfied with their service and I felt very safe in their care.

“Conservation volunteering in Madagascar”

★★★★★

written by KEWood on 22/10/2018

I have just come back from 6 weeks in Madagascar of which I spent 4 weeks volunteering with Projects Abroad in the conservation team. We were based in a large village in Eastern central Madagascar, which is right next door to several important national parks. One park has virgin rainforestt, while the ones we worked in were mainly secondary forest. We worked in the forest, Monday to Thursday on a variety of tasks - path laying, tree planting, seedling collecting, lemur censuses, taking school children into the forest as part of their education etc. Then on Friday, we worked with all the other projects abroad teams doing a variety of community activities such as litter picking, village house painting, school feeding etc. I really enjoyed working in the forest as the lemurs were daily visitors and we saw so many different birds, insects, flowers etc - way more than we would have done as just visitors to the park although we did that too at the weekends. Working with the local people was lovely - they were so welcoming and looked after us well. The path laying was hard physical graft and there was plenty of walking but that was good too as we got fit and lost some weight! We learnt a little Malagasy and had a weekly cultural evening as part of our stay which really helped us to understand more about the country and local area. Living in a hotel right in the village centre meant we felt more part of the place and less foreign but the downside was the noise - taxi Brousses, cockerels, dogs, pigs and people all awake first light and making a noise! We were well fed and our rooms were comfortable though not luxurious. We met a wide variety of people including other volunteers who ranged greatly in age, nationality and experiences. The projects abroad staff were excellent and I would recommend anyone to go and volunteer in Madagascar .

“Diving and Marine Conservation in Belize”

★★★★★

written by echshore on 22/10/2018

The diving and marine conservation placement in Belize with Projects Abroad was the perfect location for me to undertake my undergraduate dissertation. The staff were amazing in helping me achieve what I wanted in terms of not only the placement but also for my dissertation and making everyone feel comfortable and welcome not only on arrival but for the duration of the placement. I stayed for 5 weeks and was able to further my knowledge of diving with several dives a day between Monday and Thursday. The diving itself was amazing from being able to see many different species of fish surrounding the coral and even being lucky enough to dive with some turtles! Aside from diving I was able to participate in some community outreach programs such as several summer camps for the local children where we taught them the dangers facing the coral reef and the importance of waste disposal in the country. I would love to go back sometime in the future and would definitely recommend this trip to anybody thinking of it!

“I travelled to South Africa to take part in the Human...”

★★★★★

written by chloe97040 on 20/10/2018

I travelled to South Africa to take part in the Human Rights and Law Project in Cape Town. As an aspiring lawyer in the UK, this project was extremely beneficial to my future plans. I stayed for 4 weeks with a host family; which is definitely one of the best parts of Projects Abroad, you get to fully emerse yourself in life in that country! The impact of this project on the community in Cape Town is very important. Without the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office, many of our clients would never get the legal help they need. The work for refugees in particular is rewarding; and something i hope the office continues to work on in the future. Although the price for this volunteer abroad project is high, the experience you gain is worth every penny. Your horizons will broaden and you will never want to leave!

“Transforming Trip to Tanzania ”

★★★★★

written by AnabelleLane on 20/10/2018

Before I travelled to Tanzania with Projects Abroad I had never travelled alone, however the team at Projects Abroad made me feel very comfortable and informed by ensuring both me and my parents had support and information pre-departure. I spent two weeks in Tanzania on the High School Care and Community project, where I learnt a lot about the culture and working with children. Although I met many different people within the community at Arusha, Tanzania , there were always members of the Projects Abroad staff with me so I always felt safe. Projects Abroad ensured I had a working Tanzanian SIM card and encouraged me to phone home regularly because they understood that our families back home needed reassurance that I was well and enjoying myself. Projects Abroad organised numerous activities for after work which included: a drumming and dancing lesson, a cultural cooking class, a Swahili lesson, meeting a local tribe member, a safari trip, a walk to a local waterfall and swimming in the waterfall, a visit to a local snake park and a leavers party. Everybody I met during my placement was friendly and welcoming and I think that is the main reason why I enjoyed my placement so much, because I always felt safe and looked after. I would recommend the trip and company to anybody.

“An unexpectedly valuable experience!”

★★★★★

written by dominikaleitane on 18/10/2018

As someone who wants to undergo a law conversion degree but is not yet doing so (I'm in my Third Year of my undergraduate degree), I knew I wanter to do the Law and Human Rights internship, since it is the only human rights law-related work experience I could find that does not require a law degree. I thought it would just be a CV box ticker, however I was wrong. Even though I was only in Cape Town for 2 weeks, I have learned an incredible amount about law as a career, and more specifically I experienced what it was like to be a human rights lawyer, which reaffirmed my choice of this career path. I received invaluable support and guidance from the professional lawyers who acted as supervisors for the project, which made me confident in my ability to do the work from day one, even though I have not had any formal law-related work experience. Indeed, thanks to the supervisors' detailed induction and feedback, I got a certificate of distinction for my work, which I feel accurately represents how much I learned. As for my experience outside of work, my host mother made me feel at home; I cannot emphasise enough just how much of a great time I had, socialising with my host family and fellow volunteers, exploring Cape Town and participating in social events hosted by Projects Abroad. My time at Cape Town was a perfect combination of great fun, useful work and new experiences. From the moment I was picked up at Cape Town airport to the moment I was dropped off for my flight back to London, the only regret I had was not staying for longer.

“Amazing Experience - would love to go again”

★★★★☆

written by 304Fallon on 18/10/2018

I spent a month in Peru with the archaeology project and it was absolutely incredible. After a particularly awful 18 hour flight, my host family were very welcoming and kind. I immediately felt at home. I would definitely recommend this trip for anyone, especially students on their gap year, who's looking for a volunteering experience where no two days are the same and everyone on the team is genuinely looking out for your wellbeing. At first I was apprehensive about going by myself to a country I'd never been but I quickly learned more about the culture, and I also found it quite easy to build on my Spanish skills. Also, I could always be confident that the food the host family gave me would be delicious. One thing I would have liked to know before I booked with Projects Abroad is just a little more information about what I would actually be doing on my project. Overall an amazing experience!

“Fantastic Elective Experience”

★★★★★

written by crgrav on 11/10/2018

I had the best time doing my healthcare elective through Projects Abroad. I chose this company because of the competitive prices they offered compared to other organisations and because of the project that was on offer. I went to Cambodia and I was practicing physiotherapy in an orphanage with children. When you sign up for PA, you get access to a myprojectsabroad page which has all the information you need regarding Visa's, flights, FAQ about your chosen country etc. I found this page really useful for the preparation for the trip. Your destination's coordinator phones you about a week before you go, just to make sure everything's ok and to see if you have any questions. On arrival at the airport, there is someone from the team ready to pick you up and take you to the apartment. The apartment was lovely with double beds and an en-suite in each room. There was security 24/7 and a cook who made 3 meals a day for us. Tuk tuk's were provided to take us to and from our placement. On the weekends there's the opportunity to travel to other parts of Cambodia with other volunteers from the apartment and projects abroad also puts on social events for free which are a lot of fun to socialise and learn about the history of the country you're in. Going through projects abroad saved me the hassle and stress of trying to find a hospital abroad to carry out my elective, as well as finding somewhere to stay and transport. It made the process all smooth and simple and I would definitely recommend.

The project was very well run and there was a clear schedule for volunteers to follow while also having opportunities to be creative with teaching the children. The volunteers were very well looked after and all the staff could not have been more helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the community aspect of the project and how welcome I was made to feel.

“Costa Rica Conservation & Environment ”

★★★★★

written by Natasha136 on 09/10/2018

I’m in my first year of A-levels and, in the summer of 2018, I decided I wanted to do something that would help me gain more independence and challenge me in new ways both mentally and physically. When I eventually landed in San Jose after a short stopover in Miami it was so exciting because after months of anticipation I was finally here in the capital of Costa Rica! The first night I stayed with a host family, my host mum was the loveliest welcoming person and was very passionate about Costa Rican food - she taught me lots I never thought I would be taught about bananas and mangos. Barra Honda National Park was where I volunteered for the following 3 weeks. Every day we had two daily projects that involved the studies of mammals (such as monkeys and bats) and butterflies or trail maintenance, general camp duties and helping in the nursery garden. On the weekends, we went on mini excursions to local beaches, other national parks and even had a river boat tour and saw crocodiles. This was such a fulfilling experience that was due to the friendliness of the staff and the other volunteers as well as the opportunity to be fully immersed in Costa Rica’s incredibly beautiful natural environment and culture. I feel like this trip has helped me gain so much confidence meeting new people and for my travels in the future.

“Volunteering in Vietnam”

★★★★★

written by SophieAlvarado on 07/10/2018

The most amazing thing I have ever done was to volunteer in Vietnam. It has given me a sense of achievement and made me think about my practice as a professional. Projects Abroad were professional from start to finish in supporting me and keeping me up to date on everything regarding visa, where I was going to stay the place I was going to be working and much much more. I was met at the airport by a representative who showed me to my accommodation and around Hanoi and also the place I would be working. I carried out a lot of research before my decision to go with Projects Abroad and I know I made the right one by choosing them.
