“Dripper”

★★☆☆☆

written by yqMcIntosh87 on 27/11/2015

After ignoring the original indifferent reviews, I bought one as it was British. Reviews said it was a dripper and it is. I cannot stop it leaking down the handle of the brew head when the brew is being expelled. I have had new seals and filter kits from Dualit but that just has the effect of making it nearly impossible to twist on the brew head into place, the handle will snap off one of these days. You do get decent coffee eventually, so worth two stars. Dualit no help, just avoided answering my questions. Obviously there is a design fault which they are unable to address. Note: Using Lavazza Rossa coffee.

“de-scale every week or it will die”

★☆☆☆☆

written by moggers on 12/05/2015

Having taken delivery of one of these 3 months ago I was excited to see how it would be. I'm no connoisseur but I love my coffee. It took a lot of goes to get the water to flow anything like what it showed in any of the adverts and YouTube videos they publish. Eventually, if you don't temper it down at all we could get some flow some times. Even then it was still fine, we put that down to the romance of making it yourself, although nothing like in a coffee shop. However now after 3 months of use it has been returned to Dualit. They have issued us with a charge for the repair saying that it was furred up with lime-scale. They suggest that it should be de-scaled weekly or fortnightly. We did it after 1.5 months and so we ended up with a machine that stopped working completely. The Gaggia machines don't seem to need this kind of maintenance and so now cannot recommend this machine to anyone. This machine is very much a huge disappointment to us. think seriously before buying as I would not buy this one again.

“won't repair under warranty”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/03/2013

Broke after 6 months and Dualit diagnosed the problem over the phone as limescale and therefore not covered under the warranty. Very poor customer service. Coffee was nice while it worked but no confidence to buy Dualit product again. Expensive coffee if it only lasts few months

“Leaking, unreliable, cold coffee maker. don't Dualit.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by drewzzr on 18/11/2012

I thought I had just bought a dud. Turns out, looking at other reviews, I'm part of a growing club of unhappy cold, messy coffee drinkers. It leaks back into the drip tray and the pressure is hit and miss. Coffee is often cold and the steam nozzle output is like waiting for paint to dry. It the shop, it looked good, sturdy and functional. As an ornament, its fine. But if you want a decent cup of coffee, might want to consider a different model. Perhaps post work fine? I don't know, but I have had mine two years and It's never worked right. Looking at a replacement now. Hence I'm review surfing first... Good luck coffee drinkers!

1. "It leaks back into the drip tray and the pressure is hit and miss". No, steam feedback into the drip tray is a design feature to lower the temperature after frothing milk.

2. "Coffee is often cold". Not if you follow the instructions and allow at least 0.25l to run through before making espresso.

3. "The steam nozzle output is like waiting for paint to dry". Not on my machine. It's almost too powerful unless you remove the plastic swirler. Do you know how to use the machine?

“Poor performance, inefficent and flawed design”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/07/2012

Makes good coffee when it works! But is flawed in its design. Constantly blocked filters causing dangerous high pressure that can explode with coffee grains scattered far and wide if the coffee holder is removed prematurely. The excess pressure causes enormous amounts of waste hot water to over flow into the drip tray requiring frequent emptying. If I had been responsible for design and testing before marketing I would be ashamed. Would I recommend it to anyone? YES Duralit engineers they might try it out and discover its flaws.

“Dualit 84202 Espressive Good looks - poor quality”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/07/2012

I purchased this machine and almost immediately it started leaking when making coffee, leaving large pool of water. Persisted but it did not improve. I returned it to John Lewis, where I bought it, and they replaced it without any quibble. This left me thinking that there had been previous problems with this machine. The new one arrived and I had just got it out of the box and going through the cleaning process only to find that the steam/water toggle switch did not work correctly - I was getting hot water instead of steam. It was then that I read the reviews on this machine and realised I should never have purchased it, the problems I experinced were similar to other purchasers. Yes it looks good and makes resonable coffee but it needs filter pads for the filter, that are not easy to get hold of and the coffee comes out of one very small hole in the filter holder, that is easy to block up - hence the filter papers. I am returning mine fo a full refund.

“seriously flawed filter ”

★★☆☆☆

written by brake2hard on 16/06/2012

I purchased my machine following 2 faulty Gaggia coffee makers 3 years ago. On the rare occasion the machine works properly the coffee is excellent with good crema. Most of the time it decides to block itself resulting in seriously high pressure build up that prevents the handle from being removed from the machine until some time has passed. I have tried many different types of coffee specifically designed for espresso makers and found no difference in the frequency of blockage. A friend bought a delonghi from a car boot sale for £5 and his machine makes a perfect brew every time with any coffee espresso or otherwise! It would seem that I am not alone in this respect which would seem to suggest that the machine is seriously flawed and potentially dangerous. I will not be recommending this machine to anyone and feel that Duallt are still riding on the success of their toaster - it doesn't get blocked!

“Don't buy this machine from John Lewis........”

★★★★★

written by dellajharris on 08/12/2011

I bought this coffee machine which I am entirely happy with, it looks good, makes lovely coffee and is very easy to use but I made the mistake of buying it from John Lewis for £179.99. Two days later I popped into my local Dunelm Mill and saw exactly the same one for...... wait for it.... £119.99, when I challenged John Lewis using their 'never knowingly undersold' policy they rejected my claim as the one I bought from them had 'a free milk jug'. So that 'free' milk jug cost me £50.... I told them I would quite happily forfeit my 'free' milk jug but they weren't interested. Has anyone else had the same experience as this? I will be taking back the JL coffee machine and getting a full refund and purchasing the machine from Dunelm, John Lewis have not only lost a sale but with the amount of people I shall be telling and the post I will be posting it certainly won't do their reputation any good... Hope this helps others.....

“Dualit Coffee Maker 84202 - Excellent”

★★★★★

written by on 17/07/2011

I normally sit and read everything technical, and then compare all the options and manufactures but the day I bought the Dualit machine was a chance buy, "A spur of the moment" and a good one, I based it on the other Dualit appliances I own and the quality so decided I couldn't go wrong. I am no coffee expert but decided last year it's the real thing I like and find it addictive. This machine has caused me no problems at all, good and quick to use, great coffee every time, well built and even looks good. There are things said about the filters, I personally have not used them and don't intend to, I have had no blockages but I have a process and keep my machine clean so maybe that helps. It produces a brilliant cup every time at a good temperature equal to very expensive coffees purchased in top brand name shops so for me I am happy :-) "Remember nothing or no one is perfect" it's all about balance and compromise.

A wonderful coffee machine. This machine does get blocked but you can use filter papers but these are difficult to find however I have found that if you regularly clean the brew head and by this I mean take it apart and clean it properly then the problem is reduced significantly. This machine produces wonderful coffee with a fantastic creme that I have found hard to beat. I would strongly recommend this machine. The one downside is that the drip tray does fill up quickly so you do need to empty this regularly in order to prevent water going everywhere but I would not swop my machine for any other.

OK, its a good machine - quite noisy and you have to remember to empty the drip tray as it fill up very quickly. We only use ground coffee as the pods are a con, far too expensive but the coffee taste is good, and the frother works fine. The problem for us is trying to get the thin paper filters to try and keep the metal filters clean - even Dualit do not stock them which is either ironic or bonkers. They really need to address this! But we like it, its well made, easy to clean, looks good in the kitchen and like our Dualit toaster will probably go on and aon and on and on!

“This DUALIT Espressivo coffee machine is seriously...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/02/2011

This DUALIT Espressivo coffee machine is seriously flawed if ground coffee is used to make espresso.
The metal filter gets irretrievably blocked with trapped grounds. Because of this you have to buy the special filter papers that Dualit have manufactured to try to solve the problem. If perchance the machine is used by someone who doesn't know about the filter papers you are well and truly compromised. On three occasions my kitchen has been covered in coffee grounds as the filter explodes it's grounds all over when it's removed under the extreme pressure build up. I've gone through 4 filters in the last year and although they are only £5 each it is extremely annoying that one is forced to keep outlaying money for what is after all an inherent and dangerous fault with the design.

I took me ages & tons of research to finally stump up the cash & I have not been disappointed. Solid reliable machine that does exactly what it should. Technique does take a bit of getting used to but it is simple to use & I have got lazy & use Illy pods, but I love the idea that you can use both ground coffee & pods. Fairly easy to clean but you do need to descale it regularly if you are in a hard water area. Very pleased I bought it...

“I had studied reviews on all the £100 - £200 espresso...”

★★★★★

written by on 24/01/2010

I had studied reviews on all the £100 - £200 espresso machines and narrowed my choice down to the Dualit Espressivo and the Delonghi 310. Both offered all the features that I consider necessary for a good entry level mechine, both look good and the reviews all rate them equally.
The fact that I've got Dualit toaster and kettle which have survived the test of time swung my choice in favour of the Dualit Espressivo.
The machine was easy to set up although the instruction booklet does contain some silly mistakes (with the numbering of parts).
It makes great espresso's and cappuccino's but at first you do feel like it's all a bit of a fuss and sometimes they turn out cold or too weak but this is user error rather than a machine fault. Follow the instructions and it makes a perfect coffee.
The first couple of times it did seem noisy, this has since settled down to an acceptable level.
One slight failing is the omission of a milk jug. This is definitely required and you'll need to buy one if you want decent cappuccino. Other than that, a really impressive machine that I'm very happy with.
Being Dualit, you pay a bit more, but the build quality is excellent.
