i've owned and xs38 for over a year now, yes typically it came fairly dry and twangy but after a little lube calmed down, during greasing couldn't help but be impressed with build quality for its £100 price tag. power out the box varies but more than 80% i know of have been on legal limit from new if you've had 9ftlb readings i'd of taken it back as something was really wrong or clean out the interals as it may be too sticky. they have geat potential 18ftlb i'd say would be easy if you... Yes this gun starts off twangy however even before bedidng in when its power is well below the full power when its fully run in it will put a clean as drilled hole through a floor board at 30 m using bisley wasps flat head pellets. It has the power I desire in a hunter sporting gun and is accurate even with the iron sights. The only draw back is be carefull not to lift by the barrel shroud underleaver dock or you will pull it out of place needing to be pushed back before firing becomes... (read more)

I recently bought a XS38 combo from woodfieldgcp, the rifle was bought & delivered on a face to face basis by Will the owner of WGCP at a very reasonable price.
I have a problem with rats and crows around the barns and needed something that would be able to dispatch quarry at 30+ yds.
My first impression of this rifle is how well these Chinese guns have been made,I was told not to touch them with a barge pole but glad I went to have a look for myself.
I have had a few BSA's and a HW's in...

SMK XS38 custom supergrade underlever air rifle .
What we have here is a straight clone/copy of the legendary HW77
Bad points - twangy action,main spring and internals were dry and not lubed at all , supposed to be full power but it was barely 9 ft/lbs.
Good points - Solid build quality,highly polished bluing,very nicely finished hardwood stock, accurate out of the box, anti bear trap mechanism - and easy to tune with one of the tuning kits available online.
Well this gun was so dry...

update to review from 28.9.10
<br/>
<br/>Just as I expected the main spring and internals of this gun were bone dry - no wonder it cxreaked like an old barn door , why build a quality rifle , go to the trouble of a deep blued finish and add a well made ,well finished hard wood stock - if your going to ship the gun unluibed and ungreased ???
<br/>
<br/>As stated the build quality is excellent , that was even more evident once I had it stripped, and the dozen or so shots I took , though under powered proved the accuracy of this fixed barrel underlever.
<br/>
<br/>I'll do a final update once the gun is back from the shop , fully tuned and hitting like a cannon.

Update
<br/>
<br/>I got my XS38 back from the gunsmiths yesterday - fully tuned,lubed with a better quality Titan xs spring - the gun is quieter with the awful twang now gone and the recoil is no where near as harsh as it was .
<br/>
<br/>The power out of the box was way down and I mentioned this to the gunsmith - he tweaked the tuned action up to a very healthy 11.7 ft/lbs and as springers tend to increase in power when they are run in he's asked me to take the rifle back to him after 500 shots or so - in order for him to adjust the power to the right side of legal ( hows that for a professional craftsman caring about his customers )
<br/>
<br/>Chrono's aside - I still love the old phonebook penetration test - in this case a 500 hundred odd page paperback ,
<br/>
<br/>Pre tune it got through 157 pages with a H&N super point
<br/>
<br/>after tuning its getting up to 240 pages with the same pellet .
<br/>
<br/>11.7 ft/lbs @ 592 feet per second in .22 cal
<br/>

I'm looking into buying the brand new supergrade xs38 custom deluxe model as I already own the xs38 carbine and I am looking for a full powered .22, so far the xs38 has been great but I never really looked into tuning kits or new mainsprings or anything so contact details of the gunsmith would be great, the new xs38 is £150 which is still a long way off a new weihrauch. I was also wondering if you needed to purchase the tuning kit and take it to the gunsmiths to fit, or would they have new mainsprings and parts that they can change over if I just took the gun in by itself ? either way I'm getting the new xs38, just wanted to know if it is really worth all the tuning or will the gun come up to scratch by just putting about 500-1000 pellets through it and letting it wear in.

A well written and informative review: reviews are- always better when you can compare a well known gun to a lesser known gun.. Thanks.

Sports Marketing, SMK XS38 underlever 19" barrel bundled with 4X40 SMK tele.
Worked very well staight from the box, the 4x40 tele bundled with it is okay, but needed sighting in. Firing a few hundred shots improved its performance noticably, with improved power and tighter grouping. There was a good clang from the mainspring to begin with, this too has deminished along with the dieseling with some use. This is the first gun I've used with auto safty and anti beartrap, at first I found it...

I fancied an underlever Air Rifle and was tempted with a Air Arms TK200, however, even secondhand, these attract a healthy price tag. So after reading up on various U/L rifles i conntacted Solware in Tamworth and ordered my XS38. I was a little apprehensive at first, as i had not even handles one of these rifle, let alone fired one.
I was amazed at how good it was, accurate out of the box, able to hit a 40mm target at 25 yards first pellet. Great weight advantage being quite heavy but very...

Well i was out shopping in Pellpax in Norfolk and I saw the new model SMK, after deliberating (arguing) with the father in law as to whether or not to buy a chinese rifle I decided to go for it, it came with a 6x40 scope and the whole package was up for £199, I argued this down £180 which is about right for the gun.
Initial impression were good, however the it needed a bit of refinishing to make a good rifle.
This rifle is a copy of Weirach underlever rifle, and to be honest is actually a...
