The Elite Group ECS K7S5A is truly great I had no problems with it.
I was surprise what it could do.

I've run this Elite Group board for some time. The current model operates in my tertiary machine, powering a 1.8GHz Duron and 512MB PC2100 Corsair RAM (CAS 2.5). This board has proven to be OK, but no more than that. I have had the board fail for no apparant reason (at the time it was running an Athlon 1800+). The processor was fine, indeed as were all the components, and an 850MHz Duron brought it back to life (the Athlon I gave to my Father incidently, who needed an upgrade). I have also encountered the board twice before. A friend of mine bought one, as did his brother. When they came to upgrade their processors, the board died and would not power up again under any circumstances. The second time this happened, I was present and can confirm that nothing was done to cause the board to fail (aside from the upgrade. Just now, when endeavouring to upgrade the machine from a 1.3GHz to a 1.8GHz Duron, the machine refused to boot up, until the BIOS was reset and the old processor reinstalled. After booting it with that, I then reinstated the 1.8, which it took gracefully. When it works, it's a pretty good board. I've been stubborn and seen it through, but I can't say it's hassle free. Especially if you upgrade with any frequency.

Did a DIY with the components and built a reasonable pc. Running with a Duron 1.2. Foolishly read an article to overclock the cpu. Gave it a bash, changed the cpu setting from 100/100 to 133/133. Now the screen remains black, not the result I was expecting. Anyone have any ideas on this?

The Bios is access through pressing the Delete Key on startup.!! And the Duron won't like being set to 133 MHz FSB, reduce it to 100 MHz, and use a prog like CPUCOOL or SpeedFan to adjust the FSB gradually, a 33% increase will overheat the CPU and cause the Black screen. If you haven't already destroyed your CPU, try small increases up to 10%, and improve the cooling. Good luck

Reset your BIOS. I think it the J4 jumper. Just turn off the computer, find J4, move jumper to pin 1 and 2 for a few seconds, then put back on pin 2 and 3. Then turn on your computer. I did the same thing you did. I tried to change the buss speed to 133/133, rebooted, and had the same problem. Clear the bios, and you should be fine.

I had a similar problem with my K7S5A, I had changed the fsb to 133/133 and when the computer booted the screen wouldn't go on. Easy fix, the motherboard stores this settings in the CMOS, all you have to do is find the small flat battery on the motherboard. Once you do this you can remove the battery and place it back in...or you can find the jumper near the battery and switch it so it makes contact with the middle pin and the other pin that it is currently not touching. Then switch it back into the previous position. Either way your CMOS settings will revert back to the default and your monitor will turn on when your computer boots. Once it boots up there will be a messgae that says something about the CMOS, just choose option 1 to set your CMOS, adjust time and date settings and save. Your done.

I have version 3.1a of this board and find it an excellent board for the money, I use the onboard sound with quite good results and have so far had no problems with it, I suggest you go onto the ECS site and download the latest sound drivers and updates for the onboard sound and use that instead of your sound card.

Have you already disabled the sound card on the motherboard in BIOS.

Hello,

I noticed you had two different processor families. The Duron is operating at 100 MHZ and the Athlon is 133 MHZ. You may have to enter the bios and reset the clock on the CPU before system boot.

1)Upon power on, enter the bios by pressing ESC.
2)Go to the CPU configuration and set the system bus frequency at 133 Mhz. Your memory for this system should also be able to tolerate 133 Mhz.
3)Set both and save.
4)Boot to OS.

See if this helps.
