Countrywide sent a surveyor to my property who stood & assured me that he'd found nothing wrong with my home, only to then have the buyers wanting to drop the price as he'd written in the report that my gas central heating was inadequate, as with my electrics, I have certificates proving otherwise & that there is not anything wrong with either! I have given a one star ONLY because the field is required!!! We paid for the higher indepth Homebuyers Report through our buildings society who use Countrywide Surveyors. My husband and I both received a phone call from the surveyor before he went out to the property asking what we would like him to check and then we heard nothing more assuming everything was alright we bought the property and moved in only to find many problems with the property. I used Countrywide for a Homebuyers report. Never again. Total waste of money. The surveyor entered the loft and noted the felt was sagging and torn in places and noted on entering the loft it was heavily layered with insulation which obstructed the view of ceiling joist. Needs further investigation he says. At this point he does not tell me he can see obvious daylight through the roof, something I noted days later just by standing on the ladder looking up. My bankn instructed avaluation on my property a I wanted to borrow more against the house. Countrywide contacted me promptly, they were very courteous and we arranged for a valuer to come to my property a few days later. “Completely rubbish survey one star is to much by miles ”

In 2011 we hoped to improve are lives by moving to a bigger home with a good size garden for our two girls. We went to the bank to arrange a mortgage we were told to get a survey done by countrywide so we had a home buyers report done to be safe. This was done it came back saying the house had no structural problems the walls had no problems the roof had no problems except the possibility of wood worm of whitch there are none. “worst customer service”

cant believe how awful the people who work on the phones are spoke to a lady with no manners! who thought it was a 'faff' to send a text to confirm an appointment, she was rude to me throughout the whole conversation possibly because she felt like I wasn't important enough for her time! would never recommend using them purely on the fact how appalling she was on the phones. wanted to write a formal complaint but could not find an email so if anyone has one please let me know!… Read Full Review

Trying to remortgage our property...We have had several valuations by local agents. ..They under valued our property by £200,000.....yes £200,000...refused to discuss the survey with me on the telephone and then hung up...eventually got a copy of the valuation survey from the mortgage company and it consists of one paragraph ...yes only one. ... that is factually wrong....DO NOT LET THIS COMPANY ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR PROPERTY.....We are now having to appeal that is costing us more time and… Read Full Review

Read reviews on here and feared the worst. Countrywide rang me, arranged the survey, the surveyor rang the evening before he was due to confirm. Next day he turned up on time and the guy was friendly, thorough and professional. Told me at the end of the survey that all was basically ok, I had confirmation from my mortgage lenders within 24 hours, the full homebuyers survey report was with me within 48 hours. “Countrywide Surveyors never again”

I employed Countrywide surveyors to do a Homebuyers report as my Mortgage provider (Nationwide) employs them. I was told incorrect conflicting information from Countrywide call centre staff as to when their own surveyor would contact me and had to make several telephone calls to chase this up. “Massive downvaluation”

Recently had a valuation by countrywide done on our house on behalf of our buyers lenders. In a nutshell the guy spent most of his time on the phone to his colleagues trying to sort out his diary and some office stuff. Anyway he was friendly enough and then left. A few days later we found out that he placed a valuation of 45k below the price that our buyers had offered and that we had accepted. Would be interested to know the name of the Estate Agent you were on sale with,
because believe it or not Countrywide are directly linked to a multi-national Estate agency chain that appear to have the least problems themselves when Surveys are carried out. I have seen serious problems ( including rising damp ) overlooked to get the deal through, and the valuation accepted for both buyers / sellers also the lender in lending criteria - in ease of the Chain getting all potential earnings from their involvement i.e Sales fee commission, lender acceptance commission, justification of high fees charged and potential recommendation. Sounds like in this case you were unlucky in the Sales Agency you chose - but there`s a bit more involved than just luck

Hi there,
We sold via an online agent, but yes we had the agent you refer to value our house previously and guess what?, the value that they came up with was very similar to the value that countrywide came up with. Made us suspect that some sharing of info was happening between sister companies.
Anyway, the story has a happy ending for us as we eventually sold our house for a higher figure than the countrywide valuation, so we are happy despite the terrible treatment we feel we got from countywide and their sister estate agent company.

The Surveyor used by The Coventry mortgage agents Godiva Mortgages. The Surveyor from Countrywide was a complete idiot, first he flagged up Asbestos in every room of the property which meant we had to pay for a specialist report, which showed very low level asbestos that could be plastered over if undisturbed, however he insisted we pay £3,500 to have it removed by the specialist, he also recommended a 10K retention on the mortgage for extensive refurbishment, which actually only needed a new… Read Full Review

I work for a financial institution in the mortgage industry, and I think what consumers forget is that in the case of simple mortgage valuations the surveyor primarily inspects the property on behalf of the mortgage lender to confirm if it 'safe' to lend on. This process flags specific concerns and risk areas on that property to the lender, be they disrepair, legal, financial, or health and safety risks. By the sounds of it your lender has strict lending criteria surrounding health and safety concerns, I know my employer does, which seems reasonable in the current climate. Was this a buy to let mortgage?

The surveyor also of course owes a duty of care to the mortgage applicant and to third parties. A competent surveyor would be expected to raise concerns about asbestos if its presence was suspected in a property.

What if the surveyor had failed to spot the asbestos, and you had gone ahead with the purchase unaware it was there? I imagine your review of this firm would have been scathing for other reasons!

I can not speak for all lenders here, but from my perspective a retention sum is not usually an assessment of the cost of the works deemed neccessary to fix a property, it is a figure set out to ensure that there is leverage against a borrower to ensure the works required to bring a property up to the standard required are carried out. Otherwise in all likelihood the works will not be done. Call it a financial incentive if you will...

Came to value my house for our buyers for Natwest/Royal bank of Scotland BUT took 10 weeks for surveyor to come from agreeing sale with our buyers then he was only here 10 mins missed lots of things i know he should have picked up but was too stupid to see them. UNDER VALUED by £30,000 with a report that said the house was fine & in good order & well presented but under valued it on the grounds of no other house had sold for that price unbelievable!!! These were the chosen ones by the mortgage company but I might as well have just googled the property and thrown together some general caution about buying the house. Didn't pick up subsidence. Didn't pick up previous dodgy building work with no lintel used. Didn't provide decent knowledge or likelihood of asbestos (although typical for the property). This company surveyed a house I was looking to purchase on behalf of Nationwide Building society. Nationwide have been fantastic but the surveyors have been a complete nightmare.
