I brought the lawn mower in 2010 right from the start it would not start (forgive the pun)!! phoned B and Q told me to go to local agent who told me I had hit a stone! I told him that, that would have been a miracle since the machine had not started since coming out the box!. 1 year on noticed oil coming out of the crankcase I took it to a local lawn mower repair centre, after laughing and saying not another idiot buying one of these he told me that the engine is made in china and we would get to know each other well due to the amount of time it wold be in the workshop!!My advice is steer well away and buy something with abriggs and stratton or honda engine,oh and also not from B&Q

Bought a Mountfield from B and Q mistakenly thinking it was a quality product. Had it two years. The gear cable has snapped twice (repaired under warranty) but now the front wheel assembly has sheared off (and the other wheel does not look too robust (the mower is now out of warranty). Each front wheel is only held in place by a plastic housing which is far too flimsy.

Earlier this week I purchased a Mountfield Mower. After assembling the mower, I started it and immediately it over-reved. When I cut the engine there was a distinct smell of burning and a load of grey smoke. I called the Mountfield Helpline on the instructions and was informed that the spring on the throttle cable was probably bent. I was told that I should call a local agent to have the mower repaired. I was told that I would have to cover the cost of transporting the mower to the agent. It was also made clear to me that I was responsible for making all the arrangements to rectify the fault. The helpline operator stated that they had given me a solution to the problem. There was no acknowledgement of the fact that the "solution" involved extra cost, time and hassle for me. Having paid several hundred pounds for the mower I feel that this is completely unhelpful. This was a brand new mower that didn't work out of the box. Why should I have to rectify (including additional expense) an error made by Mountfield?

Too slow, front wheel mounts too flimsy (just broken one and having real trouble getting replacements), can't deal with THICK grass it just clogs up,the protection for the drive belt isn't up to it and therefore belt gets clogged with grass clippings, drive belt jumps off (but easy to fix - if you're prepared to cut a bit of plastic to get in to it, same as repair companies would), broke the bit of metal that retains the starter cord on the 4th use, the difficulty getting spares. Basically only buy if you can't afford ANYTHING else.

What a load of rubbish!!
Used only once... the power drive is like a snails pace.
the grass collector does not sit correctly so you get covered in grass.
The staff at B&Q are a disgrace they diddn't want to know and expect you to drive around the country taking the faulty good to a service agent.
DON'T TOUCH A MOUNTFIELD MOWER WITH A BARGE POLE!!!

Disappointing - it's very slow - I want to push it but it won't go any faster than a slow dawdle - I bought the machine from B&Q a couple of days ago - local dealer has had a look but says that my machine is typical.

After reading the reviews on this website for the Mountfield HP474, i decided against that model and went for the 'top of the range' as it was billed. I assembled it, followed all of the instructions, and managed to mow roughly a strip of grass 2 metres long before the engine cut out. It took me 20 minutes to get it going again. I then managed to cut enough grass to fill the grass box, but when I tried to start the mower again, it refused. After about 20 pulls on the start cord, it snapped - so had the engine actually worked, the pull cord would still have snapped quite early on in the mowers life. I took it straight back and demanded a full refund, which to be fair to B&Q, they gave me. I wont touch a Mountfield again.
