“AVOID THESE ”

Written on: 07/03/2013

Owned a Swift Moselle from new (2009), Problems with build quality from day 1. 3 years in, it started leaking. Swift 'attended to the repairs' - we found out they had only done cosmetic repair and not even looked for the leak. Transpires the leak was from the chimney flue and is known to Swift as a common fault. We ended up going back to Finance Company under the CCA (Consumer Credit Act) and got all our money back. Swift are a complete sham - they know about these faults and continue to... (read more)

We have exactly the identical situation with our 32 x 12 2010 Moselle. Our van has evidence of water ingress on the door side down the length of the van from the wardrobe to the fireplace. Swift repaired the wall in the shower room but obviously did not thoughly check the rest of the van. Subsequent checking by ourselves when we realised that the dining furniture legs were going mouldy due to a wet carpet that the full extent became apparent. We are in the process of rejecting the van and would like to know how it all went for you. Thanks alot.

Hi there.
First thing to say is that Swift are fully aware of this fault and appear to be doing nothing about it.
They came to ours several times to do 'repairs' when we were not there. We found out from our site manager that they weren't even looking for the fault, they were simply replacing internal panels - cosmetic repairs to make it look like they had fixed it. We had the same thing with the furniture legs soaking us water from the carpet.

So here is what to do. If you bought the van on Finance, you will be covered by the Consumer Credit Act. You should therefore complain to the Finance Company (perhaps cite to them what problems you have experienced with Swift as their first response will be that you have to complain to the manufacturer). Wait and see what they say. If they come back, with a 'not our problem', dont worry. Your next step is to then go to the Financial Ombudsman and tell them that you are not happy with the response of the Finance Company . The Ombudsman will then liase with the Finance Company. It sounds like a lot of hassle but in reality, it is just a couple of letters (which is quite insignificant compared to your outlay on the caravan) .

With us, the Finance Co, sent an indepenant assesor in to look at the van. He reported that the faults were manufacturing defaults , which meant they were on the van from day 1, which in turn meant that the Finance Co were liable as they in effect owned the caravan at the point of sale. They therefore reimbursed us pretty much the whole cost of the caravan (less a small amount for useage) BUT they also paid us a large proportion of our site fees / transport and siting costs which we were not expecting.

Even if you didn't finanace the whole thing, you are still covered - you only have to have paid £100 (even by a credit card) - so say you paid £100 deposit on your credit card and the rest cash, you can still claim under the CCA.

If you paid the full amount in cash, then you will have to go after Swift directly. However, you now know that they KNOW about this fault so perhaps contacting Trading Standards or even get a solicitor to draft a letter for you .

If you want any more help or info , let me know your email or phone and we can have a chat.

It was a bit of a slog but in no way daunting.

PS - If you did get Finance, was it Black Horse by any chance. If so, you might get lucky as thats who we were with, so they will already be aware that a similar case was put against them.

Let me know how you get on. Good luck.

I have had the Moselle for 3 years now. I think its a very well balanced van. comfortable, good layout, plenty of space. not 1 problem with the van apart from general things that will affect anything like shower washers and taps dripping.Kitchen doors are not great quality. Boiler has caused a little trouble and needed a thermostat, spiders built a nest in the flue and caused a blackout. would recommend thid van to anyone. good value (read more)

“fantastic and good value”

Written on: 24/07/2012

I have swift moselle 2010 3b model, whilst i had warranty issues these generally were cause due to the van moving pitch and needing to settle, whilst Swift take their time doing the warranty repairs they are by no means the slowest company to do the warranty repairs. These were done efficently and Swift staff were friendly. I have had the van for almost 3 years and have had no major problems and still enjoy the van. It is good value and good quality. Only down fall would be if you... (read more)

We also have a Moselle which is 2 years old and have had to take out all the windows on the front door side as they hadn't been sealed correct in the first place also had to have the bathroom floor replaced, as for getting swift to do something direct NO CHANCE we had to go through the park ,which to be fair Swift said they would do the jobs as a gesture of goodwill, But where was the quality control in the first place?.

I have owned a Swift Moselle for almost a year now. Its design is very modern and well layed out and is excellent value for money, as long as you get a good one with no major faults as customer services and warranty support from Swift is non existant. Mine has many faults ranging from lights not working to major structural faults. None have been fixed almost a year later. I still have a cooker that does not work, a setee that I have to put wooden boards under to hold it up, a roof that... (read more)
