My first introduction to fatman amps, was via the then, unusual, itube hybrid valve amp and dock. A product which given it's relatively low cost, worked extremely well. Having been hooked by the whole tube thing, I then upgraded to the iTube 252, a more serious all analogue solution, which was much nearer to "true hifi" and a serious improvement over the basic model. However, in a fit of madness (the hifi upgrade bug has no knowm cure!) , I then decided to go for the 452, which at just shy of £2000, is a whole different ball game. So, the obvious question, is has it been worth the considerable extra outlay? Setting aside bias, as in having spent that amount of money wouldn't I have to say yes, I would have to say without a doubt. First of all, the build quality is a quantum leap beyond the 252, both in terms of look and feel. Secondly, base, midrange and treble is somehow fuller and more rounded. This view was borne out by my wife, who tolerates rather than understands my obsession in hifi, was asked what she thought about the sound and she said "meatier" which is actually a very good description.

So basically, what we have is an amp who's sound is only beaten by it's looks and the quality of it's build. Whether or not that improvement warrents the extra outlay, is at the end of the day, up to the individual concerned and we all have things that we spend money on that other people wouldnt. However for me, it definately is and if you like to listen to your music as opposed to just playing it and the rest of your equipment is up to the job, then in my opinion, it's worth every penny.
