Good Points: Farmer Giles of Ham and Leaf by Niggle are excellently written.
Bad Points: The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is one huge poem and is difficult to follow and Smith of Wootton Major is completely plotless.
General comments: J.R.R. Tolkien: Tales from the Perilous Realm I. Four short stories called Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Smith of Wooton Major. It is one of the less well-known Tolkien books but it is brilliant. I think it is nearly as good as The Hobbit. Read it!
