“Without doubt worst pub in Northamptonshire ”

Written on: 23/10/2012 by hayley35

My wife and i thought we would do a reccy and find a nice pub with nice food and a nice welcome. The landlady was downright rude ,ignorant, she hadnt a clue what the specials were telling us we would have to wait for the chef. This was at 7.00p.m the male slouched at the bar who stated he was the owner was no better. They clearly are in the wrong business. The reccy mentioned earlier was for our daughters 21 birthday. It was for 14 covers we walked out stunned, stay well clear. my comliments to the chef. The food was amazing. The night went downhill slowly. The landlady has obviously got a problem. She blows hot and cold and is one very nasty piece of work that tells a lot of lies.I bet she has a large intake of new staff and chefs because they cant work with her.I t would apear that the husband does as he is told and defends her.Never again until she goes. Went as a family of 4, seated us and took order quickly, and that was the only quick thing all nite, we had a wait of 1hour 15 minutes for main course, and then they forgot to cook one of the dinners so had a further 20 minute wait, offered us a free drink for the wait! We then ordered the desserts all £6 each and believe it or not we had a 35 minute wait for those, wouldn'you of thought they would of tried to deal with us a bit better considering their mistake with the mains. “It felt like we waited forever.....”

Written on: 23/06/2012 by WallyBear (1 review written)

Where do I start? We were left to stand at the bar for a least 5 minutes before some young chap asked if he could help, we advised we had a reservation, to be told 'you need to wait for her on the phone' & pointed to a woman leaning on the bar on the phone with her head in her hands. We were then asked by another guy if he could help - again, we were told to wait for the woman & left standing in the doorway. We asked if we could order some drinks & were reluctantly served. I was greeted with... (read more)

“NEVER AGAIN!”

Written on: 16/05/2012

We should have heard the alarm bells ringing when we were asked if we were with those dreadful groupon voucher people when we booked! On arrival we were made to feel that we shouldn't have been there. The landlady asked in a very off manner " Can I help you " and when we said we had a table booked she snapped "name!". The food was edible but not great and certainly not worth the prices. We have eaten better in many pubs. The service was very poor and we felt unwanted. When we left the... (read more)

“"Food to die for"”

This is our second visit to the Old Red Lion in Kislingbury, this evening was to celebrate my birthday and what a meal it was! From the gorgeous crab aperitif to a steak you could cut with a teaspoon and the finale of a sharing dessert tray of 6 delicious sweets - truly a meal in a million. We enjoyed our meal in friendly surroundings with welcoming staff and a cheerful atmosphere - what more could you ask for. Thank you to the waitress, thank you to the owners and thank you to the chef - we... (read more)

“Basil Fawlty lives on...”

Written on: 29/03/2012 by morrispd (1 review written)

We left this pub thinking we had met the Female Basil Fawlty but were apprehensive that it was just us, a quick search for reviews showed us otherwise, if only everyone on here had also put reviews on Trip advisor... After an evening at the Olde red lion we had good food but the service was absolutely shocking and not by some useless waitress but the owner. She is ruining a nice little country pub there. We had a small misunderstanding on arrival and we ate our meal under an atmosphere... (read more)

Guest's Response to morrispd's Review

Written on: 01/04/2012

I know what I would like to say in this Response, but will not allow myself to be dragged down by any of these people……When Groupon Announced the Deal we set up with them, some of our customers and associates locally, voiced their concerns, based on their own experiences, stating that it could possibly attract the wrong sort of business/customer to our Restaurant…….fortunately for us we have met, served and gained some truly delightful new customers and look forward to welcoming them back, unfortunately yes the deal did attract some people we would not want to come back. To any one reading the Reviews that go before this Response, you may like to take note that they are from Groupon Diners, the only difference between these people and the ones who have written outstanding Reviews about us both online and on Cards we were handing out within the restaurant, is the nature and disposition of the Reviewer.

Despite popular belief anyone in a customer facing role will tell you, not all customers are nice…….. I was obviously bought up very differently from these Reviewers, as I was raised to believe that if you had “NOTHING GOOD” to say about a person, then you “said nothing”, if you could not do someone a “GOOD TURN” then don’t “do one”……honest, decent people do not personally insult others and honest decent people do not come into our establishment bringing with them, bad manners, chips on their shoulders and an attitude that offends and makes both our staff and us feel uncomfortable. Whilst these reviewers think they have slunk out of our establishment and anonymously written these vile, nasty and in the main lies, about us, they have not…..because they were identified as the sort of person who would do so, on entering the building, by their attitude, long before in the most part they threatened us with it. To anyone reading these Reviews I would say, make up your own minds as to what sort of person you think the Reviewer could possibly be, by nature of the nasty, rude and insulting things they have written.

The last Reviewer’s reservation was accepted by us after the final redemption date for Groupon had passed, we did not have to accept the reservation, he arrived without the voucher, when he was asked for it he stated that he did not have to present it, it was subsequently pointed out to him, in writing, on a Voucher, that he did……he took offence at it being pointed out to him that he was actually in the wrong, and things went downhill from there, they were frosty towards us from there on in, eventually the Landlord asked them to leave, they left slamming our doors and threatening us with both them and their friends doing bad reviews on us, subsequently the threat was also received in an e-mail……to put these Bad Reviews into perspective we have in the past 8 weeks served approximately 725 Groupon Diners and have been asked by Groupon to Partner them again, due to the response from their customers. At the end of the day I would ask anyone reading this to consider whether they would be offended and put up with someone behaving badly within their home, because despite being a Business, this is also our home and each and everyone of these Reviewers bought to our table a seriously bad attitude, despite their suggesting the problem was ours….we have 100’s of glowing satisfaction cards for prospective diners to view, there are also Reviews posted on Go-Dine and Trip Advisor, however we are not arrogant enough to believe that they will always be glowing…………the final insult from these people, is that their meals were virtually complimentary from our end as they paid Groupon, not us, would you insult someone who paid for a meal for you.

On a final note and to set the record straight, once and for all, our table water comes from an expensive filter system installed in our cellar and pipes it through onto a font on our bar, as we have no mains tap water available in the bar area, only a dedicated hand wash sink and tap, which by law we cannot serve water from…….we make a £1.00 charge for the water, which is presented in a Corporate Bottle, within an ice bag. These people who insult me should consider that I have in the past 3 years raised £15,000 for charity, including Cancer and Help 4 Heroes, we will also be making a donation this year to WATER AID, being any profit that we may make, once the annual cost of the Filtration System is met, helping to provide something in a 3rd World Country that here people seem to take for granted…..FRESH WATER.

Morrispd's Response to morrispd's Review

Written on: 03/04/2012

As the original reviewer I feel I must respond to the comments left by “Guest” below.

My wife and I visited the Olde Red Lion and had a good meal with very poor service, that was it. We are in our late 30’s, we eat out very regularly and visited using a groupon voucher as we have many times before to try out a place, some which have become regular staples when we eat out. If you are to believe the comments made by the owner/waitress/staff (all are the same person) then the only people who complain are groupon diners but reviews here and on reviewcenter.com (from the pre groupon era) do show otherwise. Please note though that the reviews are rarely disparaging of the food and only the service from this one lady.
I agree with “guest”, (or waitress from now on) ,that all customers are not nice but when in a customer facing role in the service industry it is the job of the staff to grit your teeth and the offending customer will be gone in an hour or so. I do disagree that we were “not nice”. We didn’t go out for dinner with the purpose of not enjoying ourselves but when my wife told the waitress at the end of the meal that she had felt unwelcome when we arrived that was not the opening gambit for a fight. This was just the opportunity for her to apologise, which she did not. I had warned my wife that I didn’t think the waitress could take criticism despite it being requested by a note on the table and boy, was I right. The waitress told us how we had had the wrong attitude from the moment we walked through the door, told us how much she had done for us that evening and then involved the rest of the restaurant to confirm that they had all felt welcome so she could prove that my wife didn’t feel unwelcome. Ridiculous. I was angry and did slam the door as I left but throughout the evening we were just sat quietly eating our food so we could leave as the atmosphere was uncomfortable. Going out is about more than just the quality of the food. I take issue with her comments about “slunking out of their establishment leaving anonymous reviews which are vile, nasty lies”. We gave our feedback when at the restaurant which was taken badly, I later e-mailed the waitress so that it was not during heat of the moment to allow her to reflect on it but got the same response in reply, again with no apology, I then left the review. We have told the truth, told the waitress we would leave a poor review and have been far from anonymous. There were no threats just a complaint and some advice. Please make your own judgement on me, my review, other reviews and especially the response from the olde red lion. I have had lots of less than great meals before but only this has inspired me to go online to leave a review.
Our reservation was accepted after the voucher had expired, we also did not take a printed voucher as everywhere we have eaten before has accepted the voucher code on my phone. A printed voucher was waved in our face to show us that a print is required as it says it in the small print but we were able to e-mail it from the phone so all should have been OK. We were told to go outside as there would be no reception to send it inside and then we followed her across the restaurant. We weren’t being shown to our table though, we were told we needed to go outside to send it first but it doesn’t take 2 people so we had to ask to be seated as we were both hovering over our table in what was essentially an empty restaurant. I said once seated, I would go and do it. It all seems really petty as they did accept our reservation but it was the cold unfriendliness that we were really putting her out and everything was reluctantly doing us a favour. I think the waitress hits the nail on the head by saying “it’s not only a business, it’s also our home”. If it was your home, then only your friends and people you enjoy to associate with would ever eat there, so as a customer, she expects you to conform to this ideal, in reality you are not going to have everyone you meet around for dinner but in a business everyone is expected to pay so should be treated just as your best friends would be at your own dinner table. Finally our meals were far from complimentary, it matters not who we paid the bulk of the money to, in this case it was £19 to groupon. We also paid a supplement for the main course (about 6 items on the menu had supplements’) and the bar bill, 1 pint and a water. All in all a bill of £28.00 for a Wednesday evening. Without groupon it would have been empty and had all the associated costs of staff etc with no return so please do not make out we were free guests.
Finally...Water, what a non issue...very good, less waste. My wife ordered mineral water but we got filtered tap. We only noticed when we got an unsealed bottle and from the bill, I think it was £1. I hope you add it to your charity work, all very commendable. Nothing to do with our review though. Just another sign that she just won’t listen to what people are telling her, my final thought, get a more personal and approachable face for your front of house.

Barabrith's Response to morrispd's Review

Written on: 19/04/2012

I have never been to this establishment but regularly contribute to the reviewcentre - always honest and mostly positive (previously as Welsh Foodie and Sludminger but I've forgotten my passwords so re-invented myself!). The review itself sounded rounded and reflected other recent reviews. I take exception to the landlady's response suggesting that she could judge people as they entered her establishment. I regularly eat out, with work, my wife and often with an 8yr old and 14yr old in tow. We are house (and restaurant) trained but often dressed casually, particularly if we've been out walking or shopping. I suspect that I would be judged as the sort of customer that this lady would not welcome but she need not worry. I will not be crossing her threshold.

We had heard good things about food at the olde red lion and it wasted no time telling you how the pub had won awards in the county good food guide and was bought by a local couple to provide a service to the local community. I think we were two years late to see anything they could win an award for, a reduced menu due to one chef on holiday, one sick and the new one starting a week before he was due to. We went to the restaurant on a groupon deal with high hopes due to the awards they had achieved in past years. When we arrived our table was ready, coats taken and menus given. We also found out that they had a new chef so the awards in our eyes weren't valid any more. The groupon deal stated that only 2 items on the menu would carry supplements but upon looking, nearly half the items actually carried a supplement. A few of the items that didn't carry a supplement were also sold out so we... (read more)

Mine host, Paul, treated us like long lost family friends. The banter in the bar was so friendly that we could have stayed and listened. Alas, it was time to eat so into the restauarant we went. I picked the venue based on Go-Dine photo's for comfort and ambience. We weren't disappointed, even with the celebratory birthday balloons that we had not requested. Due to the current economic client Chris and Paul the landlord and landlady have to host the venue primarily themselves, undertaking cleaning, doing all the organising and daily being on duty in the restaurant and bar.....during the week you dined with them Chris's father had a stroke, the past 4 weeks has been a terrible time for them, having to continue managing the business with Chris's father very sick in London. The measure of the couples professionalism is that during a fabulous Abba Tribute Evening, having recvd a call from the hospital saying Chris's fathers condition had deteriorated, they would not leave their guests until they were sure that everyone was fed and happy, such is the respect of their regular clientelle that we as customers actually offered to step in and cover for this hard working couple to enable them to attend Chris's fathers bed side....everyone ahd a fabulous evening, organised by Chris, so cut them some slack, the food and service on offer at The Olde Red Lion is outstanding.

We were also in the restuarant on the night in question. I fully uphold the previous comments and like the other guests we could not wait to leave.
We were greeted warmly by the landlord who sat us at a table and brought our drinks. Fine - then the landlady appeared! We were at the wrong table and were swiftly ordered to move. We chose to sit side by side which seemed to displease her.We were not ready to order when she asked so she stormed off. Felt very unwelcome and uncomfortable.
This too was a birthday celebration which I had really been looking forward to.
The food was excellent but I chose to take my steak home as we could not wait to get out of there.
Excellent welcome, a la carte quality food but whole experiece ruined by the landlady's attitude.

I am disgusted that these people had the audacity to write this review. I WAS the person sat near them that they refer to. They did not book their table whereas I had, I also ordered my food in the bar whilst enjoying an apperatif, they went straight to their table BEFORE they ordered. Their whole demeanor was in the main churlish and offhand. They did not once say please or thank you. The yorkshires' were in fact exemplary, well risen and crisp. As far as the potatoes are concerned, many restaurants serve the potatoes in a separate bowl and this couple didn't even wait to see if this would be the case before making comment! As far as my being known to the staff is concerned, this is not really the case, we have eaten there only a couple of times previously and prior to lunch had been speaking with the owner regarding the possibility of holding a wedding reception there (because the service is excellent and the food IS so well prepared, cooked and presented!!!!). One wonders why, if this couple's regular establishment is so good, they would want to go elsewhere. It remains to be said that if this couple represent the calibre of clients that the Red Lion at East Haddon enjoys I think I'll be giving it a miss!!!

On visiting the pub at 1st sight found it very warming and appealed to us both. The landlord was most welcoming and greeted us with a smile and warm banter during drinks and felt a good evening lay ahead. BUT THEN WE MET THE LANDLADY. I found almost instantly a frosty reception from her which was to get worse throughout the evening. Food was served a little... (read more)

I found this review very helpful because...the last three reviews appear to be running along a common theme - the food's good but pricey, the landlord is welcoming and the landlady is a liability to their business. Sounds like it would take a brave man to tell her though!

we read great reviews about the Olde Red Lion in Kislingbury winning the coveted 2010/11 Food & Wine Award and went along to sample the food & atmosphere. Whilst the food was good the waitress (also the landlady) we found to be most unwelcoming with an appalling aggressive attitude. not one to be deterred by a bad experience we decided to try it again (with 4 girlfriends). We were greeted with the same hostile attitude, we were told we would "just have to wait" for our table water, when we... (read more)

After having read about this pubs outstanding food, i was dissapointed to have ordered a fillet steak rare, and to receive it medium. When i mentioned this to the resturant manager she returned to the kitchen only to return to me telling me rather abruptly, both her chefs say its rare, and it appears more medium as its a older aged steak. Surely that should be informed to the customer prior to ordering?? Poorly handled complaint, rude service and dissapointing food. Do not reccomend, and... (read more)

We had heard really good things about The Olde Red Lion pub and booked a table eagerly anticipating a treat. Several friends had told us how good the food was and how they were going back at some point. We were really looking forward to eating there but how badly misplaced our anticipation was! The restaurant was quite empty although the bar was also serving food and that may have been busier. The food was actually very nice, can't fault it - apart from the fact we ordered Leek and Potato... (read more)

I eat out very regularly at places ranging from budget to expensive, so I know what to expect as a diner. This place has some serious delusions of grandeur! The restaurant feels dated and somewhat stifling. Despite it being a Saturday night, the small restaurant was only half full; you'd expect that a restaurant that had won some award or other to be booked out on a Saturday night. The reason for this could be due to the awkward feel of the room, the waitress who was quite possibly the... (read more)

I was actually one of the diners in the Restaurant on the same day that the diners who have previously reviewed this Award Winning Restaurant attended, however they review is somewhat biased. I witnessed their appalling behaviour, attitude and language, they were in fact asked to leave. The Olde Red Lion was recently voted Pub/Bar Restaurant of the Year at the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards something which speaks for itself ! There is always a warm friendly welcome on offer with... (read more)

I felt compelled to write a comment about this pub, recently we visited this pub for the first time- as a group we decided to treat ourselves and we liked the idea the pub accommodated your travel home via what we thought a taxi . Well we were greeted by the waitress (to find out later owner) who was very austere and made us feel most unwelcome. We were the only group in the restaurant and apart from the waitress's rudeness and bad customer service the food was OK expensive but not bad. ... (read more)

The Olde Red Lion is located right on the High Street, it is a friendly, top notch pub with great food. They have informal dining in the pub and a formal restaurant, Hunter's, in the back. They even have accommodation and meeting space. (read more)
