This is the kind of music website/application that record companies are supposed to hate but maybe the time is right because they love it and so do I!

Spotify is music service which is a bit like a subscription-based version of iTunes. They have about 6 million tracks in their database and they are adding more every day thanks to agreements with all of the major record labels and most of the indie labels. It's seems like the only thing slowing them down is how many people they can employ to add the music.

You have to register to join Spotify and you download a small application to your computer, again a bit like iTunes. The difference between the two is once you are registered with Spotify you can listen to all the music in their database for free. As much as you want, when you want. For free! All you have to do is listen to a couple of adverts an hour. Much less than a radio station. It does take a bit of getting used to because you don't normally listen to adverts in the middle of an album but its worth it.

You do have the option to become a premium member of the site which gets you access to higher quality audio tracks, no adverts and the ability to use their iPhone application which is going to huge I predict! Monthly membership costs £9.99 or you can buy a day pass for 99p to try it out - which is about the same as buying a single song on iTunes.

The user interface is really easy to use but it took me a little while to understand the search results properly. You can create playlists, see other peoples' playlists and create radiostations which is a bit like super playlists based on your musical tastes.

Spotify is already getting loads of good press bit I imagine it will get even more in future if Apple don't introduce an iTunes version in the next year or so.

agree with all the good comments about Spotify - if you think about it as a radio statin where you choose the music and you get hours and hours of great music with a minmal advert interruption which is fine -you can also pause your music to go to have a comfort break !!

Spotify is a very good product - easy to use and with a huge variety of songs to choose from. Highly recommended.

Spotify is a brilliant music player that is as easy to use as another well known application. It may not have all your favourite artists but being able to search then play on the same page is a breeze. I'm creating new playlists everyday and then Twittering them to my mates or sharing the more out there songs with friends on Facebook.Love the fact that it saves the songs you've played before without having to mark them (great if you're a little lazy like me).Spotify is great fun for those "do yo ...

Spotify is a great music service. You just type in what you want to listen to and the 9 times out of 10 you get what you want and it's all for free. unfortunately you get adverts come up every few song which can really bug you if you are getting down to a hardcore Yes listening prog rock fest then it sort of messes with the hippy karma of it all but it is a small price to pay.you cannnot take the music with you and you need to be plugged into the interweb so it's only really good for listening t ...

I have just downloaded Spotify. What a fantastic program.
I was shocked how good it was and hooked right from the start. It is very easy to use and does not slow my PC down, unlike iTunes !
If anyone is in any doubt just try it..... It's free !
This is one of the best things to come to the internet for years

First of all can I just say, what an amazing idea Spotify is??Spotify enables you to listen to almost any music you like as long as you are connected to the internet. If you have the free version every 20 mins or so you will hear a 30 second advert (which sounds like a radio ad) which personally is no problem and is how Spotify is legal and has free music. You can pay 99p for 24 hours of no adverts or £9.99 a month subscription for no adverts at all. When you find an artist Spotify will d ...

I have used quite a few different types of music download sites/software and Spotify is quite different. Unlike limewire, ares and the download sites like them, Spotify streams the music to play on the software media player, rather than download to your computer so you can play it with iTunes or WMP.At first I was quite annoyed about this as I typed in to search for some DJ's and found that their database is bigger than any other site I have personally used before. By that I mean I searched for ...

Spotify is great! I downloaded it off spotify.com a few days ago and it's just great; free music to listen to, legal and spyware free! I hate radio because so much of the music is not what I want to hear and is commercial and made worse by the often useless commentary of many DJs. But spotify is a superb alternative. With the adverts every now and again, it's a bit like radio but only a 100 times better! I have been able to find quite a lot of odd, old and small artists on there too, which is gr ...
