With your opinion you stand pretty much alone. Do yourself a favour and buy a really good amplifier and fine speakers. The weak point in your system may be the cheap integrated amp. Go for a better model or upgrade straight to a pre/power amp combo. This CD player was elected "Product of the Year" by dozens of European hifi journalists - not without a reason. If it sounds terrible in your ears, it is most probably not the player that's to be blamed. By the way, you can't compare a former 500 GBP player with machines like the mentioned Linn which cost twice as much or more. Sure, you can always benefit from a bargain offer on the 2nd hand market, but then again the Marantz might be a steal for, say, 200 GBP or even less.

“The older the better!”

Written on: 09/07/2011 by BassLover

I originally owned a CD63SE (Special Edition) and have since owned a 67 OSE and 2 63 KI Sigs. The KI definately kicks butt, when compared to the lesser models. It's better, particularly at the frequency extremes: clearer treble and much better bass. I experimented with some more modern transport/DAC set-ups for a while (after having my original 63 KI stolen), but missed that Marantz sound. Having realised that the modern machinery wasn't actually any better (contrary to what the... (read more)

After a lot of 'Googling' and checking of various reviews within the audiophile press I have opted for a used Marantz CD63 MkII KI Signature CD player to keep within my meagre buget of £200. What a difference from my previous model, an ancient, yet well regarded, Denon 1100 model: the sound of the Marantz is magical, most noticeable the width of the soundstage. Details are sharp and bass much more pronounced. I have noticed notes, sounds that I hadn't before. It is very musical in its output... (read more)

I have owned my 63 sig from new, some 6-7 years, with out a doubt, the best CD player i have ever purchased! as people keep saying this machine is still currently better than a lot of £1000 players around today, go out and find one second hand, eBay is a good place, you will not be disappointed.

Brilliant machine, go find one, separation and placement of instruments good, imaging good, solid and reliable , if being picky a touch bass light? But nothing to worry about.. (read more)

I have added this review as I have the CD63 SE as well. This is in my second system in the basement with Musical fidelity B1 amp and Mission 770 'silver' speakers ( £460) in their day. The KI is better. The midrange is slighty lower in volume level which has the effect of giving a more pronounced top end. The whole of the mid range has more detail and the SE mid range sounds harsh and muddled by comparison. I was happy with the SE untill I connected the KI. Don't get me wrong, the SE is good... I have owned the standard CD-63mkII and the KI Sig version sounds nothing like it, the KI is in a much higher class in terms of sound quality and can often rival many more expensive players. (read more)

I've not had problems with the high output level. The built in electronic volume control works really well (if you did have a problem) and takes nothing away from the fabulous sound quality of this player.

The sound stage from this player is huge with great finesse as well. The player also feels well built. I don't intend parting with mine.

I purchased this gem from my friend , i was using a sony cdp90 , but when i connected 63mk2 i can hear some difference between the two. Marantz is very detailed and the bass is tight. Though the features are quite a few when compared with sony , i like this player and very much pleased with it. (read more)

Great Value for money. If you're looking for a smooth, detail and superb sounding player this has got to be it for the price range. Vocals are extremely pleasing.

Definitely, a recommended product and well received by various magazines. (read more)

Bought the CD63 KI, superb sound, and as mentioned value for money. It is a bargain buy; no doubt! Just checkout the HiFi World Mag and lookup CD Players and you will see that they concur.

Been using the marantz cd63 mk2 ki signature for the last few weeks, not the great leap forward i was led to beleive. Still that just shows never take magazine reviews as gospel. Good then but not great.

Has a smooth, but not very detailed sound when using analog connects (also has coaxial and optical out). Looks nice, fairly user-friendly, and very reasonably priced. I like mine. :)
